Philosophy

Doctoral student Zhao Fan’s article ‘Hobson’s Conception of Definable Numbers’ has been published in the prestigious journal History and Philosophy of Logic, and is available at https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01445340.2020.1731784?journalCode=thpl20.

Martin Prior, the son of the late Arthur Prior, a world-leading logician who was Professor of Philosophy at Canterbury University College, has donated one of his family’s paintings to the Christchurch Art Gallery – Doris Lusk’s painting of the Christchurch gasworks. This follows Martin’s previous donation to the gallery of a Colin McCahon painting. The gallery’s citation reads in part: the painting was purchased by Arthur and Mary Prior ‘preparing to leave for England – a gritty reminder of home. It returned as a gift from their son over sixty years later’.

History

Global, Cultural and Language Studies

Spanish The Spanish Programme, in conjunction with the Embassy of Spain and Future Learning Solutions – Centre for Languages, organized a ‘delicious’ PD workshop for Spanish teachers of high schools in Christchurch and the Canterbury area. Clara Gómez-Jimeno, Education Attaché from the Embassy of Spain, talked about the importance of food in a cultural context, especially in the Spanish-speaking countries, and put into practice the elaboration of simple recipes of Spanish tapas that Spanish students are able to make in the classroom while learning specific language for cooking and social interaction. After preparing a variety of delicious tapas, the participants sat together, ate these tapas with a glass of juice, and ended the afternoon with a delicious note. Clara’s visit was very productive since before this PD workshop, she gave an informative talk to UC Spanish students interested in applying for the Language and Culture Assistant Programme in Spain which enables a number of students every year to live and work in Spain for a semester or a whole year.
