Together for Nutrition 2015

Evidence on Working across Sectors for Improved Nutrition in Ethiopia

Background

Committed government to achieve transformation:1. Rapidly changing economic situation in Ethiopia• Rapid economic growth • Large welfare improvements in the country; poverty declined from

44% (1999/00) to 39% (in 2004/05) to 30% (in 2010/11)2. Nutritional indicators of children improved significantly• Stunting: 58% (2000) to 40% (2014)• Underweight: 41% (2000) to 25% (2014)• Wasting: 12% (2000) to 9% (2014)

Objective symposium

• However, nutritional indicators still bad and room for improvement• Lots of knowns on impact of programs, lots of unknowns as well • Nutritional change often complicated because multi-sectorial approach

required• Objective of the “Together for Nutrition” conference:1. Provide evidence on the current status (and change) of nutritional

indicators 2. Look at evidence of drivers for nutritional improvement (increased food

consumption, agricultural production, safety nets, community based nutrition programs, women empowerment and education, roads, biofortification, etc.)

3. Look towards the future
