TOFINO’S COMMUNITY LIVING GUIDE SUMMER 20114
fromSALLYMOLE
SALLY MOLEDIRECTOR OF PARKS & RECREATION
Wow, this is one busy little department! Some big projects on the go, a really
jam packed summer planned, we’ve moved twice in 5 months, and still haven’t completely unpacked. In case you hadn’t heard, we squeezed back into the municipal hall at the end of March. We have no idea where we will put our summer student…
We’re excited to announce that the Recreation Commission has decided to dedicate a percentage of all fundraising to the newly created Kids’ Access Fund. This fund has been set up to help cover registration fees for a child in need. Application forms are available through Laura and are completely confi dential. In addition, we have partnered with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, look for the drop box for your Canadian Tire dollars in the Port Alberni store. We are always working hard to remove or limit barriers to access to programs.
In May I will be stepping down from my position on the board of directors of the BC Recreation and Parks Association. Though it has been a wonderful experience, and I believe some important work was done, it was time consuming and just a little exhausting, and meant more time away from my family. I learnt much from my time with the board.
As Laura has taken April’s maternity leave position, we back fi ll Laura’s position with the wonderful Jess. Jess is a great addition to our team, read more about her in her bio further in the brochure.
The team at the daycare, as always, are working hard and doing awesome work with our youngsters. I’m always impressed at how they approach their daily work with enthusiasm, dedication and always putting children fi rst. May is childcare month, so hats off to Fiona, Laura and Amy!!

SUMMER 2011 TOFINO’S COMMUNITY LIVING GUIDE 5
To register for a program, drop in to
the Tofi noMunicipal Hall.
REGISTRATION INFORMATIONDid You Know?? You can register for programs at the District Offi ce. The District Offi ce is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff /instructor changes should we need to expand the program.
Sorry, the Course is Full Some classes fi ll quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.
Changed your plans? A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal information prior to the course start date unless specifi ed otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Offi ce to apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application.
What?! You had to cancel it? Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofi no time”). Register early to avoid disappointment for yourself and others.
New Program Idea? Tofi no Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Offi ce. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers!
Program Minimum Ages For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the correct age prior to the fi rst class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specifi c reasons.
Accessibility We believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our community regardless of ability to pay. If you fi nd it diffi cult to participate in any program because of fi nancial limitations, please speak with one of our staff .
Advanced Payment In order to secure your spot in a program, payments for the program must be received prior to the program commencing. By registering and paying for a program in advance, the instructor is able to prepare for the correct number of participants enrolled. If you call and register for a program, your spot is not secured until you come into the district and pay for the class/program. By paying in advance for your program it alleviates the Parks and Recreation Staff from having to phone and chase up payments during the program’s session. It also ensures instructors receive their payments in a timely fashion.
If you are unable to make the full program payment prior to the start of the program, please let one of the Parks and Recreation staff know and alternative arrangements may be made.
Pro-Rating Policy By registering and paying for a program, you are committing to attending the full duration of the program. Refunds will not be granted for days missed, unless this is agreed upon in advance with the instructor. Pro-rating for classes must be arranged through the teacher instructing the course.
*New Billing Policy All program participants should register and pay in advance for Tofi no Parks and Recreation programs. If participants begin attending a program without registering, they will be added to an accounts receivable billing system with our Finance Department, and issued a formal invoice for each program they attend.
If program fees are a participation barrier for you or your family, please contact the Parks and Recreation department to make alternate arrangements prior to the start date of the program.
This issue of our Active Living Guide contains program andevent information for June-September 2011.

Congratulations, Ian!Tofi no Parks and Recreation is proud to congratulate our Purple Dragon instructor, Ian Shu on his recent belt testing eff orts in Tinidad. We are excited to report, Ian successfully obtained his new black belt ranks. Below is a brief description of Ian’s trip to Trinidad.
Senpai Ian Shu recently traveled to Trinidad with his teacher, Sensei Amber and several students from her Vancouver Dojo to take part in Purple Dragon’s 127th Black Belt Grading.
Arriving a week early to acclimatize they trained in the mornings and evenings at Purple Dragon World Headquarters. Students from Trinidad, Tobago, Canada, USA, Antigua, and Dominica represented at the three day test. In what the Professor Don Jacob calls an introduction to yourself, students are physically and mentally pushed and pushed, so as they can see for themselves just what they are capable of, and carry the ideal of doing your best and never quitting throughout life. Th ey slept at the Dojo, fasted, performed what they had trained so hard for, and learned from the many lectures before successfully obtaining their new ranks. After a couple of visits
to Trinidad’s warm water beaches the team returned home reinvigorated with a positive mental attitude.
We feel fortunate to have such a well qualifi ed martial arts instructor in our community. Th anks for all your hard work Ian!
WELCOME
Jess Towers
The Parks and Recreation team is happy to welcome their latest staff member Jess Towers. Jess has been working in the outdoor education/adventure fi eld for the past fi ve years. Her interest in working outdoors and with youth has taken her all over B.C to many small communities. She has spent time as an Outdoor Education Instructor, a kayak guide, a zipline guide as well as a leader for the Katimavik program. Along with working outdoors Jess has also been travelling in between seasons fi nding herself in Central America this past winter. Roots of Empathy PROGRAM
This year Tofi no Parks and Recreation ran three Roots of Empathy programs in classes at the Wickaninnish Elementary School. Our facilitator, Sarah Hogan, did a wonderful job of working with the students in Mr. Marks, Ms. Morris’s and Ms. Rennard’s classes. Thank you to all the families involved in this program. The program introduces students to an infant and parent from the community, in a series of classroom vists that are focussed on raising social/emotional competence in the students involved. Below we have included some photos from Ms. Rennard’s Grade 2/3 class, interacting with the Drew’s twins, Tristan and Elleree. We are proud to off er this worthwhile program in our community; it would not be possible without the support of the families and teachers involved. Thank you.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE
Bobby LaxBobby Lax moved across the country to the beautiful village of
Tofi no, B.C. fi ve years ago where he began his unconventional
culinary path by working on a gourmet food truck. Cooking
directly under the watchful eye of CIA (Culinary Institute of
America) grad Lisa Ahier at SoBo, he had the privilege of
working with some of B.C.’s best ingredients while in a very fun
environment. Bobby’s desire to work with fresh and regional
products then led him to the Bountiful Okanagan where he
found Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart of Joy Road Catering.
Twice a week they would cook an alfresco fi ve course dinner
for up to 30 people at one long table, overlooking a vineyard.
After seeing the inextricable link between food and wine in
the Okanagan he began working in the vineyard and winery
at JoieFarm, where he gained a wealth of practical wine
knowledge. Last fall he split his time between teaching Coastal
Cooking Classes, sourcing honest food for the newly formed
Tofi no and Ucluelet Culinary Guild (TUCG) and cooking for
friends or strangers at any given opportunity.
Bobby runs his Coastal Cooking Classes just about every
Friday Night in the Tofi no Community Hall kitchen from
5:30 to 8:30 pm. His classes have included many mouth-
watering themes, including For the Love of Shellfi sh, A Season’s
Feast, Grapes and Grub, Five Easy Ways with BC Fish and even
a parent-child cooking class, The Apple & the Tree. Prices for
classes vary depending on cost of supplies, but usually range
between $40-$60 per person. For more info contact Bobby at
250.266.6665, or stop by the Municipal Hall to check out topics
and/or register for upcoming classes. Watch for postings each
week around town.

Thank You!
Tofi no Parks and Recreation would like to thank David Benson and his group of students from Coloradofor the hard work they put into cleaning our Village Green this past March.
As a service project, David’s student group spent a rainy March morning picking up litter andgardening in our Village Green. Thank you for your hard work, the park looked great!
Multi Use PathThe day that I write this piece, work is fi nishing up on the section of MUP between Bay St and Drader Rd. It’s very exciting to begin moving on this project. We’d like to thank the property owners along this section for their cooperation and support. Aaron Rodgers, Manager of Community Sustainability, has been working hard on our most challenging section, between Bay St and Olson Rd. Just recently he has submitted plans to Ministry of Transportation for approval, so slowly but surely we are moving ahead. Good job Aaron!

Lighthouse TrailAs we go to press, we are looking at setting a date to declare the trail offi cially open. While we still have lots of work to do, our priority right now is getting the trail up to a safe standard that will allow us to open it to the public. We really appreciate the input you have given us as we began construction last November. The crew worked really hard through some very tough weather conditions to get this work done and we say big thanks to those people. We’re also grateful to have 5 of the crew positions funded under the YMCA Eco Intern program, and the Job Creation Program with the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. We should also recognize our Lighthouse Trail Committee, Councilor Ashton, Pat Welk, Joanna Streetly, Pete Clarkson and Cathy Thicke.
The trail currently ends close to the boundary of District Lot 120, which is owned by the province. We have requested permission to cross this Lot, which is critical to creating the connection to Middle Beach and beyond. The province has indicated it will support this application, on the condition we can show support from Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations. We have requested this support some time ago, and are hopeful to hear positive news in the near future.
Multi Use PathAdvisory CommitteeThe Committee has been busy identifying sections of concern along the MUP
and formulating policy on MUP usage. They would like to respectfully remind property owners along the MUP to spring clean their driveways to improve sight lines and cycling safety. If anyone needs help with their section, the MUP Advisory Committee members would be happy to lend a hand. Give Sally a call at 250.725.3229 ext 37.

Magical Mystery Surfboard ChallengeOn May 8th, Storm Surf Shop, Shelter Restaurant and Tofi no Parks and Recreation hosted the fi rst ever
Magical Mystery Surf Board Challenge on Cox Bay Beach. The sunny Mother’s Day brought 36 competitors
(men, women, and children) out to the event, along with an entourage of spectators.
Surfers of all different ability levels had a chance to compete in this just-for-fun event.
Participants had no say in what board they were riding, and board selection varied from a cut in half
long board to a fi nless wooden plank! It made for an exciting and entertaining community event.
To make things even more interesting, a bicycle beach cruiser race took place late in the afternoon,
in which 10 hard core competitors battled for fi rst prize! This wonderful event raised approximately $400 for
the Tofi no Recreation Commission’s Kids Access Fund, and left a smile on the face of everyone who attended.
Thank you to all the volunteers involved with the day including: Allister Fernie, Jenn Heckert, Mike Jacobson,

Tofi no Recreation Commission’s Kids Access Fund
Kids Access Fund Application
The Tofi no Recreation Commission has been working closely with the Parks and Recreation department to
establish a Kids Access Fund.
Funding Guidelines
Tofi no Recreation Commission is a non-profi t, volunteer based group, focused on improving recreation
opportunities for the residents of Tofi no. The Kids Access Fund is specifi cally focused on helping local children
become active in recreational activities off ered through Tofi no Parks and Recreation.
Who do we fund?
The program assists fi nancially disadvantaged families in enrolling their individual children, ages 4-18yrs,
in local sports and recreation programs. Funds are allotted primarily to families residing in Tofi no, however
depending on fi nancial availability, may be distributed to families residing in surrounding communities.
Financial support is evaluated on a case by case basis. Funds are accessible to children and youth in the
Wickaninnish Elementary School catchment area.
How much does the program cover?
Funding opportunities are completely dependent upon the amount of funds available in the Kids Access
Fund. Families are welcome to apply for one children’s/youth program each season. If additional funds
are available, families may have the opportunity to apply for a second program. Families also have the
opportunity to volunteer at Tofi no Recreation Commission events, to help raise more money for the children’s
access fund.
When can I apply?
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Applicants are encouraged to get their applications into
Tofi no Parks and Recreation department at least one week prior to the program commencing.
How can I apply?
Applications are available at the Tofi no Municipal Offi ce. Please complete and return to the Tofi no Parks and
