Todorovs theory or narrative

Page 2: Todorovs theory or narrative (done)

• This theory states that there are 5 stages that the narrative can pass through

• A state of equilibrium this is where all is as it should be and nothing is out of the ordinary

• A disruption of that order an event causes the equilibrium to be thrown out of balance

• A recognition that the disorder has occurred• An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption• A return or restoration of a new equilibrium • Todorovs argues that narrative involves transformation. The

characters or the situations are transformed through the progress of disruption

What is narrative?

• in media terms , narrative is the coherence/organization given to a series of facts. The human mind needs narrative to make sense of things. We connect events and make interpretations based on those connections. In everything we seek a beginning, middle and an end.

how we are applying todorovs theory of narrative• In a basic way, our music video will fit to the conventions of todorovs theory.

However, our music video will skip the first part of the theory, which is “A state of equilibrium this is where all is as it should be and nothing is out of the ordinary”. We are adhering to the other parts of the theory though:A disruption of that order an event causes the equilibrium to be thrown out of balancethe disruption has already occurred right as the video starts. The female character is unhappy, and rainclouds in the sky represent this.

• A recognition that the disorder has occurredwe will show this in the scene in the house where the happy male character will look concerned, due to the female character being unhappy.

• An attempt to repair the damage of the disruptionthis will be shown by the shot of the male taking the females hand and taking her outside. By exiting the house, this shows that the male is trying to ‘fix’ the female and make her happy again. This is extended to the hill scene, where the male climbs over the hill to reach the other side to try and help the female up. This is his way of attempting to repair the disruption.

• A return or restoration of a new equilibrium this part of the theory is represented by the final scene, where the 2 characters plant a seed in the ground while holding hands. The seed grows into a flower that represents there love and signals the start of a new equilibrium.
