INTRODUCTION

Tzvetan Todorov came up with a theory. This theory can be applied to films.

1. EQUILIBRIUM

Equilibrium is a state of physical balance. At the start of the film everything is normal and happy. Everything is balanced. This is how most films start.

2. DISRUPTION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM

In a film something happens which disturbs the equilibrium. If the equilibrium wasn't disturbed, then the film would be very boring.

3. RECOGNITION OF THE DISRUPTION

The characters realise that there is a disruption and they know that they have to try and fix it.

4. AN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE

Now that the characters realise that there is something wrong, they try and fix the damage. In most films, this is the main section of the film.

5. NEW EQUILIBRIUM

The damage has been repaired but things do not return to normal. Instead a new equilibrium is formed.
