P: Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, C: whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—

P: if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—

C: think about such things.

Hymn 37 (red hymnal): Lord, ‘Tis Not that I did Choose Thee

Confession and Absolution: P: Let us confess our sins to our merciful God and Savior. C: I confess to almighty God our Father that I have sinned by allowing other things to become more important to me than God. I have trusted more in myself, my possessions, my works, and my own desires. I confess that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. Therefore I pray that He come to me in His Word and Spirit to forgive me and enlighten and keep me in the true faith. Amen.

P: Almighty God has had mercy on you and has come to you in the person of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. For the sake of His death and resurrection for you, God forgives you all your sins and gives you the strength of faith to serve Him in righteousness and godliness. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: Peace be with you. C: And also with you.

Prayer: P: O almighty God our heavenly Father, You have called us to faith through Your Son, our Lord Jesus. Increase in us the gift and miracle of faith to follow and serve You all our days; through the same, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now forever. C: Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

First lesson: Matthew 4:12-20….With His Word and presence Jesus shines the light of His grace into dark lives. Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Closing hymn: Christ Be My Leader

Prayer of the Church

Hymn 270 (red hymnal): Jesus Calls Us; o’er the Tumult

Closing prayer: P: Thank You, Lord God, for nourishing our souls on this journey of earthly life with the food of everlasting life in Your holy Word. Fortify us to leave here and engage the people in our lives with the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Use us to bring Your peace into the lives of those who need Your love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

Benediction

P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. C: Amen.

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Second lesson: John 1:35-42….Jesus invites all to “come and see.”

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”

They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”

He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, a stone).

The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn 410 (red hymnal): Jesus, Lead Thou On

Sermon: John 1:35-42

ANDREW: FROM FISHERMAN TO FOLLOWER

I. From follower of Christ. II. To fisherman for Christ.

Offering and hymn verse (400:1, 4) Take my life and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee; Take my moments and my days, Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect and use Ev’ry power as Thou shalt choose.
