Did you know? Surfing is believed to have originated long ago in ancient Polynesia, later thriving in Hawaii. It was once a sport reserved exclusively for alii (Hawaiian royalty), which is why surfing is often called the “sport of kings.”

What is surfing? The earliest written account of surfing, or “hee nalu” in Hawaiian, was by Lieutenant James King in 1779 just months after Captain Cook’s death. He described Native Hawaiians riding a wood plank on the swells of Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii’s Big Island. Even he could see how fun the sport was, writing,“… they seem to feel a great pleasure in the motion that this exercise gives.”

With the arrival of western missionaries in the 1800’s, Hawaiian customs like hula and surfing were discouraged. With the end of the Hawaiian kapu (taboo) system in 1819, commoners were allowed to freely participate in the sport.

In the late 1800s the “Merry Monarch” King Kalakaua, one of the last reigning monarchs of the Hawaiian Kingdom, revived the hula signaling the return of Hawaiian cultural pride. In the early 1900s, surfing was revitalized on Waikiki Beach. Duke Kahanamoku, who grew up surfing these south shore waves, was a Waikiki Beach Boy, spreading aloha by teaching visitors how to surf and canoe. Duke later became a multiple gold-medal winner at the Olympics as a swimmer.

ActivitiesFun for kids, parents or the whole familyAt the Kaanapali Kauwahi Inn, we realize you can surf, paddleboard or kiteboard only for so long. That’s why we highlight several exciting and educational activities you might not expect from a typical surfshop, including two of our most popular: net fishing and turtle releasing.

Net fishing — Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders far and wide have been casting their carefully crafted fishing nets into the waves since their civilizations’ earliest days. Learn the fundamentals and basic tricks behind this ancient surf-fishing method. Should you prove a quick learner and land a keeper, one of the Inn’s chef’s will gladly prepare a fish feast for dinner.Turtle release — The green sea turtle is one of the Islands’ most treasured and revered species. Having experienced a major decline in numbers due to a variety of human-caused and natural factors, the turtle population is now on the rebound thanks to careful conservation efforts. Join us at high tide and release your own turtle hatchling into the surf and watch it begin its remarkable journey.
