nine minutes into the second period, his troops responded. Norris played a defence-splitting pass through and this time Caswell made no mistake as he rounded Barnes and prodded home. It was game-on in the 64th minute when WGC brought it back to 3-2 when Norris, collecting the ball just inside the box on the left-hand side, drove forward and blasted an effort inside the near post. WGC were now firmly in the ascendancy, but in Barnes, they found a keeper in mesmerising form, perhaps hard to believe when conceding four goals, but totally accurate. A fine reflex doube-save denied Norris and Oppong, but Codicote looked dangerous on the counter with Dougherty, Bronti and Sam Stephenson causing the WGC backline all sorts of problems. The clocked ticked over the 90-minute mark, and just when it seemed a battling display would see Codicote through, WGC substitute Afful Yeboah flicked in a near post header for 3-3 and extra-time beckoned. Not before Codicote received their second red card however - the referee believing Stephenson reacted aggresively as the sides clashed in the goalmouth following the late equaliser, and the away side were down to nine. With both sides quite rightly tiring, formations became ragged, and it was WGC who capitalised on this when substitute Ben Awad found himself in acres of space on the left flank, cut inside, drew the keeper out and fired home. Only a minute later Yeboah hit the bar with an audacious effort from a 30-yard free-kick as the hosts turned the screw. Codicote’s job, already hard enough with nine men, bordered on impossible when three minutes into the second period, captain Mark Bryant was shown a second yellow card to reduce them to eight. But on this night, nothing seemed impossible for Liam Errington’s men, and evidently to Dougherty, who curled in a sublime free-kick from 20-yard to level this thriller at 4-4, and penalties would separate the two rivals. Yeboah, Caswell and Craig Arnott, playing against his former club all netted from the spot for WGC, with Paul Donnelly, Dougherty and John Chitondo also successful meaning the scores were locked at 3-3. WGC’s Juan Cifuentes stepped up only to see Barnes save his penalty, and then the Codicote stopper turned striker to hammer his own spot-kick past Hester. Awad had to score from the spot to keep WGC in the tie, but a good night got even better for Codicote keeper Barnes as he dived low and right to deny the City man, and with it send Codicote into the third round where they will host SSML Division Two outfit Willen on March 8.

Welwyn Garden City 4 Codicote 4 (aet) (Codicote won 4-3 on penalties)
By John Hutchinson (Re-produced by kind permission of the Welwyn Hatfield Times)
Arsenal versus Bayern Munich took a back seat on Wednesday night as Welwyn Garden City and Codicote played out a truly enthralling Challenge Trophy second round tie. While The Gunners were on their way to a 2-0 Champions League defeat at The Emirates, down at Herns Lane there were eight goals, three red cards, a saved penalty, and ultimately, a shoot-out victory for eight-man Codicote. The attendance was invariably affected by the north London side being in action, but for those who did attend, they were treated to a real feast of action. The score was tied at 4-4 after 90 minutes and extra-time, and it was the Cod who kept their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 4-3. The undoubted star of the show was Codicote frontman Kane Dougherty, who bagged all four of his side’s goals, as well as netting his spot-kick, but teammate goalkeeper Billy Barnes ran him close with a string of unbelievable saves. Codicote took the lead in the sixth minute; player/manager Liam Errington’s free-kick into the box was punched straight to Dougherty by WGC custodian Freddie Hester, and he made no mistake as he chipped the ball home from 15 yards. Only six minutes later, WGC were awarded a penalty after the referee adjudged Joel Norris to have been fouled in the area in a melee with opposition defenders. Worse was to come for Codicote, as Connor De Lacy was shown a straight red for words said to the referee after pointing to the spot. But Barnes came to the rescue for the visitors as he saved Paul Taylor’s penalty. Barnes went on to make a string of fine saves to deny Jason Caswell, Issac Oppong and Norris, before the visitors went on to extend their lead. Great work out wide from ex-Royston man Josh Bronti saw the ball fed into Dougherty some 20 yards out. Spotting WGC keeper Hester slightly off his line, and WGC defenders allowing him far too much space, he took a touch before expertly chipping the ball home. Superb one-on-one saves from Barnes to deny Caswell on a couple of occasions and then Norris maintained the visitors’ lead, and things got even better when a minute before the break, Dougherty completed his hat-trick as he poked home after another Bronti assist. Citizens’ boss Adam Fisher no doubt gave his side the third degree at half-time, and

Greetings From the Pension Queue Good evening and welcome to Herns Lane, the home of Welwyn Garden City Football Club. Tonight we extend warmest greetings to the players, officials and supporters of Crawley Green for a Spartan South Midlands League Division One fixture. How can we possibly match the excitement, drama, nail biting football witnessed in our last match here, that epic League Challenge Trophy tie with Codicote. It has left many shaking their heads and asking the question ’How the hell did we lose the game’. However we cannot dwell on that now, we need to pick ourselves up and push hard for promotion and that push begins here tonight against Crawley Green. Our opponents this evening have in the past held something of a stranglehold over us, our nine previous meetings have resulted in us suffering eight defeats and achieving just one solitary victory, that coming in the FA Vase. We will need to be on our best to start overcoming that unwanted statistic. The weekend saw us return to league action when gaining a point at Chesham United Reserves although many at the game felt our performance deserved more. Our goal coming from leading marksman Jason Caswell who now needs just nine more this campaign to bypass the club’s record of 42 in a campaign, currently held set by that old Herns Lane favourite Terry Hayes back in 1988/89. Tonight marks the first official home game for new Chairman, Ollie Croft. Ollie, a popular figure at the club, takes over the position following last week’s EGM following Ray Fiveash’s decision to stand down. The first team are back in action here again on Saturday when Arlesey Town Reserves will be making their first visit. Enjoy the game…… and let’s get behind the lads, your vocal support is very much appreciated. Go Citizens Karen

TONIGHT’S MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Tonight’s referee is Martin de la Fuente from Bricket Wood. Martin qualified as a referee firstly in 1979 and for the second time 1994. He achieved promotion to class 1 (now level 5) in 1998. Martin has recently celebrated 15 years officiating in the Spartan South Midlands League. He has officiated in a number of County and League Cup Finals, and also been fourth official in the FA Premiership on 3 occasions. He has also refereed games on many Premier League grounds and the Peterborough Cup in Capetown. Off the field, Martin is a former secretary of North Middlesex Referees’ Society where he is still a council member. Martin works for OCADO and is married to Elise. He has three children; Scott (Cheshunt FC and a Watford Trialist), Ben (Wingate and Finchley) and Melissa (Arsenal Ladies Academy). The whole family are season ticket holders at White Hart Lane. Martin is accompanied at Herns Lane this evening by Brian Wright who is from Hertford and Christopher Flack who hails from Hatfield. We trust all have an enjoyable evening with us.

TONIGHT’S VISITORS - CRAWLEY GREEN F.C.
Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99 year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat. The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. Currently the Club is hosting all its first team games at Barton FC, whom they wish to thank for their continued support. The aim of Crawley Green is to build theit own ground at the Club's home venue at Crawley Green and plans are currently going through the Council as they endeavour to provide the only amateur enclosed floodlit grass pitch within the confines of the Borough of Luton. This is a massive project which they envisage will cost in the region of £200,000 - most of which they will have to fund ourselves. When completed, this will complement the superb clubhouse and changing facilities they have already built as well as the outstanding all-weather pitch which they have for training purposes. Crawley Green Sports & Social Club won the 2004 County Community Club of the Year Award and was runners-up in the South East Region Community Club of the Year Award. The Club improved on this by

Mark led the club to success in the Division One Cup and also saw his side reach the final of the Bedfordshire Senior Cup only to lose 0-1 to Arlesey Town.
