    P18K kada pamilya

We did some pencil-push-ing. Its cheaper if we give themP18,000 to go to a safe place, ani Interior UndersecretaryFrancisco Fernandez, na naata-sang ilipat ang may 100,000pamilya sa Kamaynilaan nanasa peligrosong lugar.

It endsup very expensive, aniya

We are very serious in re-moving the informal settlersalong waterways and extremelydangerous areas, the vice may-or said.

    WINNER:AMER wants togive San Beda

    the four-peat.

San Bedas Baser Amer ready to roarBy Randolph B. LeongsonNOTHING comes in a silver platter

when youre the defending champi-ons. More so for the San Beda RedLions, winners of the last threeNCAA mens basketball tourneys,

who are gunning for a rare four-peat.

All the teams improved and allof them are going for the champi-onship, said third-year point guardBaser Amer. Its not that easy andit will not be easy.

The 20-year-old Davao nativeknows that he has a bigger role thisseason with the departure of courtgenerals Anjo Caram and MeloLim, together with big man JakePascual.

I just want to guide this teambecause as a point guard, they arethe ones I should take care of. On

the floor, I am the coach, the 5-foot-10 Amer said.

But the 2012 Finals MVP knowsthat the recipe for San Bedas suc-cess in the past boils to one thingonly - chemistry.

All I want is to build ourchemistry. Though some of ourteammates last year graduatedand some players came in, thechemistry is still there, Amershared.

He added, There is no pressurebut we have to work hard if we

want to get that four-peat.With an almost intact lineup

and a new bench tactician in coachBoyet Fernandez, Amer knows thatit would always be their hunger to

win that will propel the Red Lionsback to the top of the NCAA score-board.

All I want is to win.

PICKING up where he left off last UAAP sea-son, Shej Roi Sumang knows that his teamneeds more than his scoring to take the UE

Red Warriors back in the title hunt this year.

    Maaasahan nila saakin yung leadership

    ko sa team, saidthe 5-foot-7

    guard. Sabi ngani Coach

    (Boycie Za-mar),everygame, we

    have to be focused andready.

    Coming from the same

outskirts ex-Red Warrior PaulLee hailed from, the 22-year-oldSumang credits his basketballskills from playing diligently onthe court outside their house inTondo.

Kasi yung ba-hay namin, malapit lang sacourt, kaya naglalaro ako dunaraw-araw, he said.

From there, he played withthe Letran Squires in the juniors

division of the NCAA and isnow a business management ju-nior in UE.

Avera ging 18.4 poin ts and4.9 steals per game last sea-son, Sumang eyes to take theRed Warriors over the humpthis year and they are well ontheir way. Sumang was recent-ly named as the MVP of theFiloil Flying V Hanes PremierCup, a preseason tourney UEhas lorded over, and is look-

    Rey Nambatac: New Knight rises

    JUNE 24-30, 2013

AS an old Knight leaves, a newKnight rises. With top gunKevin Alas leaving the Letran

lair in Intramuros, high school sensa-tion Rey Nambatac is more than will-ing to fill that role for the Knights.

yon, said the 19-year-old Nambatac. The former NCAA juniors Rookie of the Year

and MVP is hopeful that the wave he had be-fore would still be the same if not bigger as hekept his talents in Letran.

Masaya ako kasi yung composure ko, tuloy-tuloy lang from the juniors division, the Ca-gayan de Oro native said.

Nambatacs infusion to the team is a wel-come addition for new Letran coach Caloy Gar-cia, who took over from coach Louie Alas aftera Finals appearance last season, and gives theKnights the much-needed scorer to go along-side diminutive point guard Mark Cruz and bigman Raymond Almazan.

The 6-foot guard outspokenly wants tobring Letran back to the finals,

but he knows the climb ismuch harder than it seems.

Step by step lang. Hope-fully makapasok kami

    sa Finals perokailangan munanamingmagsikap, Nam-

    batac said.He added, Di ko

    PREVIEW

    By Randolph B. Leongson

THE Eagles were crowned for the fifth straighttime, the Tigers made believers out of theirbreakthrough performance, a Bulldog repeats,

but his crew fell short yet again, while the Archers andTamaraws slugged it out for the right to face their bit-terest foes. But as they say, that was so last year. Thisseason promises the same level of competition, whichproves that greatness never ends. With this, we giveyou a preview of what to look out for this comingUAAP Season 76.

Projected rankings are on thebrackets. Last seasons standingsand finish are on the parenthe-ses.

    [1] NU Bulldogs (9-5,Semifinalist)

For the past two seasons,Bobby Ray Parks is the runawayMVP. But this season, he wantssomething more - the biggerprize.

With added motivation thisyear as talks of him going progets louder, the second-genera-

tion star has made it a pointthat he wants nothing less thana championship for the Jhoc-son-based Bulldogs.

Winning the Fr. Martin Cupin the preseason, the Bulldogsnow boast a solid frontline withCameroonian Alfred Aroga, who

will join compatriot EmmanuelMbe and Jeth Troy Rosario atthe center position. Former

youth campaigner J-jay Alejan-dro will also suit up for NU to

    run with guards Gelo Alolino,

Robin Roo, with Dennice Vil-lamor and Mark de Guzman inthe wings.

    [2] Ateneo Blue Eagles(12-2, Champion)

New coach, new system, same old Ateneo winning tradi-tion.

Gone are the days where animmovable force dominates thepaint for the Blue Eagles. Withcoach Bo Perasol calling theshots for Ateneo, the leadershipis now bestowed upon the

shoulders of Kiefer Ravena toanchor the team in its search fora sixth consecutive UAAP title.

Hobbled by injuries in thepreseason, Ateneo will still pa-rade a strong and athletic line-up

which fits well with Perasols up-tempo style of play. Ravena willbe joined by seniors JuamiTiongson and Ryan Buenafe, as

well as electric rookie Chris New-some, third-year shooter Von Pes-sumal, point guard Nico Elorde,

    and big man Frank Golla.

    [3] UE Red Warriors (3-

11, 7th)If theres a team that has tobe tagged as this seasons darkhorse, it should be the Red War-riors.

After winning the Filoil Fly-ing V Hanes Premier Cup, coachBoycie Zamar has to be confi-dent with how disciplined hissquad is, which definitely posea lot of problems with the restof the league. Scoring dynamoRoi Sumang is back, and now

has a formidable partner in theform of the 6-foot-8 CharlesMammie. The Sierra Leone-bornrecruit has been steady for UE,giving the Recto-based squad aforce inside to match the otherteams centers.[4] UST Growling Tigers

    (10-4, Runner-up)Crosshairs from last seasons

title, USTs wonder run to theFinals makes this seasons cam-paign more about finishing

what theyve started.Basically fielding the same

line-up sans point guard JericFortuna and Melo Afuang, coach Pido Jarencio will havehis hands full trying to pull offa repeat of last years Finals ap-pearance, now with 2012 PCCLMost Valuable Player Jeric Tengat the forefront.

Teng will be side-by-sidewith his formidable scoringpartner Aljon Mariano, last sea-sons Mythical Team member

    Karim Abdul, defensive stopper

Kevin Ferrer, and streak shooterClark Bautista.[5] De La Salle Green

    Archers (9-5,Semifinalist)

As promising as they wereearly in the preseason, doubtshave casted over the Green

Archers nook weeks before theyeven started their UAAP season.

Switching from Gee Abanillato longtime assistant JunoSauler as the teams head coach

three weeks before the seasonopener, it seems that the re-vamp continues for the Taft-based Archers.

A Final Four finish last sea-son keeps the hope high for LaSalle, with last seasons Rookieof the Year Jeron Teng leadingthe charge.

    [6] Adamson SoaringFalcons (3-11, 6th)

Missing last years Final Four, this seasons hosts look to makea roar and soar above the com-petition.

Flanked by their newest re-cruit, the 6-foot-8 CameroonianIngrid Sewa, coach Leo Austriahave all the reason in the worldto feel confident of Adamsonschances against the big dogs ofleague.

With the rise of Jericho Cruz, lead point guard Ryan Mon-teclaro has now found a newdance partner after the gradua-tion of Alex Nuyles.

    [7] FEU Tamaraws (9-5,

5th)Another team on a rebuild-ing stage are the Tamaraws,

which welcomed new headcoach Nash Racela after coachBert Flores went back on beingthe teams scout.

A question that has cloudedFEU all throughout last seasonis if top guns RR Garcia andTerrence Romeo can coexist. Now, coach Nash has to figureout how to make not just the

two guards work, but also MikeTolomia, who is slowly comingto his own, in this guard-heavyline-up.[8] UP Fighting Maroons

    (3-11, 8th)Another season, another

cloud looms over the FightingMaroons. And the Iskos really

want to erase their tag as thewhipping boys of the UAAP thisseason.

Four consecutive seasons offinishing at the cellar, coachRicky Dandan wants to stop thetrend, starting with La Salletransferee and UP returneeJoseph Marata filling the voidleft by Mike Silungan.

The duo of Raul Soyud andChris Ball are back to do an en-core of their paint job last sea-son. High profile recruits in

Xaviers Kyles Lao and La SalleGreenhills Andrei Paras couldalso be beneficial for the Dili-man cagers.

    NCAA PREVIEW

    By Randolph B. Leongson

LAST YEAR, Red Lions were again kings, trump-ing bitter rival Knights. The Stags lit up the statsheets, as the Altas surprised everyone with

their magic, while six other teams are ready to lightup the tournament, which brings us to the 89th seasonof the NCAA. The question now stands, whose star willshine this year?

Projected rankings are on thebrackets. Last seasons standingsand finish are on the parenthe-

ses.[1] San Beda Red Lions(15-3, Champion)

Year in and year out, itseems that the Red Lions neverruns out of talent. Losing JakePascual, Melo Lim, and AnjoCaram, and with coach BoyetFernandez replacing RonnieMagsanoc, San Beda still lookslike theyre in tip-top shape intheir quest for a four-peat thisseason.

Guards Ryusei Koga, FrancisAbarcar, and Finals MVP BaserAmer will man the backcourt, while Nigerian Ola Adeogun,Kyle Pascual, Rome de la Rosa, and Arthur dela Cruz will pro-

vide the muscle.[2] Letran Knights (12-6,

Runner up)With Kevin Alas leaving the

team, Letran will now bank onthe trio of diminutive pointguard Mark Cruz, super rookieRey Nambatac, and last seasons

Defensive Player of the YearRaymond Almazan, who decid-ed to give it one last shot before

turning pro, as new coach CaloyGarcia calling the shots for theIntramuros squad.

Mcjour Luib, Franz Dysam, and Fidel Castro proved to bean able support for their trio inthe preseason, while JonathanBelorio, and Jamil Gabawan

will help in crashing the boardsfor the Knights.[3] Arellano Chiefs (6-12,

    8th)An impressive outing in the

preseason showed the Chiefspotential this coming season,

with Nard John Pinto havingthe leap with his playmaking, emerging as Arellanos newleader alongside Fil-Canadianscorer James Forrester.[4] San Sebastian GoldenStags (13-5, Semifinalist)

A huge blow was dealt to theStags when longtime patronDennis Pineda pulled out fromthe team, taking all of his Pam-panga studs, including last

years MVP Ian Sangalang, outof San Sebastian. This season, returning coach

Topex Robinson now has hishands full as he tries to juggle arebuilding team with new lead-ers in 6-foot-3 Jaymark Perez, aptly called The Beast 2.0,shooter Leo de Vera, and Jovitdela Cruz.[5] Perpetual Altas (10-8,

Semifinalist)Powered last year by the so-

called Aric Magic, the Altaslooks to return to the Final Fourthis season with emergingguard Juneric Baloria and last

years Most Improved PlayerEarl Scottie Thompson fillingthe void left by gunner Jett Vi-dal.

Nigerian do-it-all forwardNosa Omorogbe will still bethere for the Altas, with Justine

Allano, Harold Arboleda, and G-jay Ylagan beefing up the Per-petual frontline.

    [6] EAC Generals (8-10,7th)

Coach Gerry Esplana shouldbe optimistic this year as lastseasons Rookie of the YearCedric Noube Happi now has areliever in African reinforce-ment Gigi Manga, while guardsFrancis Munsayac, Igee King, and Jan Jamon take care of theGenerals scoring binge.

    [7] JRU Heavy Bombers(10-8, 5th)

Known for their three-pointarsenal, the Heavy bombers willcontinue to live and die by thethree.

Losing shooters Nate Matuteand Byron Villarias from lastseason, coach Vergel Menesesnow found his new gunners inthe trio of Paolo Pontejos, PhilipPaniamogan, and Marco Balag-tas.[8] Benilde Blazers (5-13,

    9th)A team searching for its

identity, this is shaping up to bea hard year for this seasonshosts.

Clearly feeling the loss ofhigh-volume scorer Carlo Lasti-mosa, Blazers head coach Gab-by Velasco will bank on hisguards Mark Romero, PaoloTaha, and Luis Sinco for offensethis coming NCAA season.[9] Mapua Cardinals (8-

    10, 6th)

Playing as this years presea-son hermits, the Cardinalsplayed sparingly in the presea-son, with their new coach, thelegendary Atoy Co, opting totrot his boys away from thespotlight.

Kenneth Ighalo, Joseph Eri-obu, Jesse Saitanan, and MarkBrana will lead the Cardinals,

who are hoping to end a 21-year title drought.

    [10] Lyceum Pirates (3-15, 10th)

    If theres one thing Pirates

coach Bonnie Tan promises, it isthat Lyceum wont go down

without a fight. Compound thatvow with Ginebra coach Alfran-cis Chua acting as the teamsnew consultant, Pirates basket-ball will surely be a hard-knocks basketball affair.

Dexter Zamora, Shane Ko,and Tirso Lesmoras will leadthe backcourt.
