Six top-rated acts in Manila soonA RUNDOWN of in-

ternational artistsset to perform in

Manila in the first quarterof this year:

Swedish House Mafia,Jan. 16, Mall of Asia ArenaThis trio of Swedish DJs/pro-

ducers Axwell, Steve Angelloand Sebastian Ingrosso isranked No. 2 on Rolling Stonemagazine’s “Top 25 DJs ThatRule the Earth” list. SHM start-ed out as club DJs in a Stock-holm pizza parlor and attractedattention when its single, “One(Your Name),” entered the UKchart at No. 7. The boys becamerock stars of the electronicdance music scene worldwide, filling up large venues and en-joying more chart successes. The Manila gig is part of a tourbefore SHM takes an indefinitebreak.

Girls’ Generation, Infinite,

Exo M/K, Tasty, Tahiti and U-Kiss, Jan. 19, Mall of Asia

open groundsThe concert, “Dream K-Pop

Fantasy” is awaited by the mul-

titude of Pinoy K-Pop fans. Thebiggest attractions in K-Popconcerts are highly polishedproduction numbers. Much ofthe music are slick adaptationsof American R&B, soul, hiphop, rock and pop.

Jessica Sanchez, Feb. 14,Smart Araneta ColiseumThe Fil-Am singing sensation

of “American Idol” fame firstperformed in Manila last Sept.21, also at the Big Dome, withnine other Season 11 finalists(she was 1st runner-up). Anear-capacity crowd turned upmainly to watch her and shedidn’t disappoint. Can she gosolo this early? (Colton Dixon, seventh finalist, is specialguest).

Jose Feliciano, Feb. 21, Ce-bu Waterfront Hotel, and Feb.22, Smart Araneta Coliseum

We remember this LatinAmerican musician strummingthe acoustic guitar to distinct

covers of The Doors’ “Light MyFire” and the Christmas carol“Feliz Navidad.” Feliciano is al-so a talented composer. Hewrote the theme of the TVcomedy series “Chico and theMan” (where he played a guestrole), and the instrumentalpiece “Affirmation” (famouslycovered by George Benson). Atage 67, Feliciano is one of twoblind music legends (the otheris Stevie Wonder) that manywould still love to see in con-cert.

Cliff Richard, Feb. 28,Smart Araneta ColiseumHugely popular around the

world before The Beatlesbroke out, Richard started outas an Elvis Presley rocker type.He branched out in main-stream pop and acted inmovies that featured his songs. His cool balladeer voice in-spired the likes of Jose MariChan. Richard successfully

reinvented himself in the1970s and again, in the ’80s.Now, at 72, he still tours ac-tively.

Adam Lambert, March 1,Skydome, SM City North Edsa

Another “American Idol” run-ner-up (Season 8), Lambert firstperformed in Manila in 2010,when his powerhouse vocalsand glam-rock swagger was infull effect. With a new album,“Trespassing,” which debuted atNo. 1 on the Billboard Top 200chart, Lambert is expected topull in a big audience on thisreturn engagement.

The Script, March 31,Smart Araneta ColiseumOn first impression, a cross

between U2 and Sting. Theband’s self-titled 2008 debut al-bum is now a classic—all trackssounding so good, we can listento them all day. We hear thetickets are going fast! PocholoConcepcion

Light, dark& in betweenreviews by Vives Anunciacion

Zero Dark ThirtyDirected by Kathryn BigelowMaybe because it’s topical

(the hunt for and eventual as-sassination of Usama BinLaden) or because it’s contro-versial (justifying the CIA’smethods of deriving informa-tion from prisoners) that Iwonder about Zero Dark Thir-ty’s nomination for Best Pic-ture. I thought the film wasoverall mildly interesting.Maybe it’s compelling stuff if Ihad been an American whowanted UBL killed. I mean, Ilike The Hurt Locker a tad bet-ter (also from KathrynBigelow, first woman to winan Oscar for directing.)

Zero Dark Thirty centers onMaya (Jessica Chastain), anextremely determined CIAagent who, for 10 years, didnothing but work on the huntfor UBL no matter what ittook to obtain informationfrom suspected allies of alQaeda. The film starts withaudio of 9-1-1 calls that dayin 9/11 and ends with themidnight raid in the Pakistanicompound.

Maya is a cold and unin-volved character from start tofinish, and Chastain does agreat job of humanizing Mayadespite the flat writing of her

character. The highlight of thefilm is the raid itself, techni-cally and artistically. About asgripping as Bourne movies, sowhy didn’t those get nominat-ed for Best Picture? So formilitary, spy-war junkies, thisfilm would be the best recruit-ment video for the CIA thatHollywood can offer.

Life of PiDirected by Ang Lee

Based on the Man Booker-winning novel by Yann Martel,Life of Pi is a gorgeous, emo-tionally satisfying tale of oneman’s accidental journey tofind his soul, poetically speak-ing. Ang Lee uses CG and 3Das seamlessly as Avatar, it’shard to distinguish which wasfilmed real and which oneswere digital images. 11 Oscarnominations this year all de-served. See this in 3D if youcan.

Life of Pi is about PiscineMolitor Patel (Suraj Sharma),an Indian boy who survives ashipwreck after 227 days inthe Pacific aboard a survivalboat together with a Bengaltiger named Richard Parker.Irfan Khan plays the elder Piwho narrates his story to avisitor. Move over, Gollum,Richard Parker is the new CGdarling.

Most of the time stunning(the ship sinking, the morning

after the ship sinking, the fly-ing fish), a few times glorious(the lightning storm), Life ofPi is a choice between theamazing or just plain lucky.

Jack ReacherWritten and Directed by

Christopher McQuarrieEx-military investigator

Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) ishired by young defense lawyerHelen (Rosamund Pike) to ex-amine the true events sur-rounding the killing of inno-cent civilians by an ex-armysniper. Everyone includingJack believes the sniper isguilty, but the deeper Jackdigs, the more “corruption” isspelled out. Influential Ger-man filmmaker Werner Her-zog appears as the main badguy.

This film reminds me of1990’s John Grisham-type le-gal thrillers (more private in-vestigation stuff than action)and would have been mildlyentertaining humor-infused le-gal thriller, if not for the out-right endorsement of the useof guns. That’s just bad topicconsidering the recent eventsat Newtown Connecticut, thedeath of Stephanie Nicole Ellalast New Year’s eve, and themass killing in Kawit, Cavite.

We just have to learn to sayno to guns.
