FTF RULES
You always have to TRY but it’s okay if you don’t get it right.
Write the DATE. Write a brief description of what the activity
is. (you do not need to copy the directions word for word – these are quick activities).
Always number or letter the answers (if more than one!)
You can have more than one FTF per page. Just be sure to date them!
I sometimes collect them to count as a homework or class work grade.
EXPECTATIONS FOR OUR CLASSROOM
Be Nice Be Honest Be Respectful Be Prepared Be Your Best, Always!

CLASSROOM PROCEDUREIn addition to what’s written in the
welcome letter:1. Raise your hand if you wish to speak.2. Raise your hand if you wish to leave
your seat. (1 finger means bathroom, 2 fingers means pencil sharpen/other, full hand means question or answer).
3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
4. Keep on task! 5. Push in your chair when you leave!6. My job is to teach you. Not pick up your
trash. So throw things away!7. This is a working classroom. I always do
my best to teach you, and you should always do your best to learn.

SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT(HINT: USUALLY THE HEADING UP HERE MAKES A GOOD “MAIN IDEA” FOR YOUR NOTES)
There are multiple units of measurement In the U.S. we use the English System or
Customary System Most of the world uses the Metric System
Can you think of the units we use in the U.S. to measure Liquid Mass Length Temperature Time
Write them on your whiteboard
METRIC SYSTEM (HINT: USUALLY THE HEADING UP HERE MAKES A GOOD “MAIN IDEA” FOR YOUR
NOTES
The metric system is a system of measurement that is used by scientists all over the world.
In the science world it is also called it “System International” or SI.
Can you think of the metric units used to measure Liquid Mass Length Temperature Time
Write them on the white board!
METRIC BASE UNITS
Liquid = Liters Mass = Gram Length = Meters Temperature = Celsius Time = Seconds
LENGTH
The distance between two points.
Base unit is the meter (abbreviated with a lowercase m)
MASS
The measure of the amount of matter an object contains
Matter: The material that all objects and substances are made up of
Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter
Base unit of mass is the gram (abbreviate with a lowercase g)
VOLUME
The amount of space an object takes up. Measure in L (liters) for liquid. Measured in cm3 for solids
DENSITY
The measure of mass per given volume. d = m / v
MASS & VOLUME & DENSITY OF BOTTLES
TODAY’S AGENDA 9/8FTF
1. In your notebook list the base unit for mass, volume, length. Include the abbreviation.
2. What “hint” can you use to remember the formula for density?

METRIC PREFIXES Prefixes are added to
metric units to indicate smaller or larger units of measurement.
Units larger than the base unit are kilo, deca and hecto
Units smaller than the base unit are deci, centi and milli.
Prefixes also have abbreviations.

CONVERTING USING MULTIPLICATION OR DIVISION
Metric prefixes are based on 10.
Each prefix is 10 times greater or 10 times less than the prefix on either side.
To convert using multiplication or division:1. Determine starting
prefix.2. Figure out how many
times greater or smaller the prefix is that you are converting to.
3. Multiple or divide depending on if you are converting to a larger prefix or smaller prefix.
REMEMBER!DO A REALITY CHECK AFTER A CONVERSION
If you are converting from a large unit to a smaller unit your answer should be a larger number than the original measurement.
Example: kilometer to meter .05 km = 50m 10 km = 10 000m
If you are converting from a small unit to a large unit, your answer should be a smaller number than the original measurement. Example: mL to L 5 000mL = 5 L .15 L = 150 kL
LET’S PRACTICE
How many milliliters are in 1 liter? Ask: home many times bigger/smaller is a
milliliter compared to a liter. Decide: will I multiply or divide my starting
number? Do the math.
Convert 360 cm to dkm
Convert .06km to m

ADDING AND SUBTRACTING METRIC PREFIXES
Sometimes we have measurements we need to add but they are not measured in the same unit.
Problem: 300g + 3kg = ____ gRules for Solving
1. Convert all numbers to the unit of the answer.
2. Rewrite the problem with converted values.
3. Add or subtract the converted numbers to solve problem.
Example: 1. Answer should be in grams2. Convert 3 kg to 3 000 g3. 300 g + 3 000 g = 3 300g
