ABOUT THE CLUB, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NEWS
Facilities: Caldicot Town Football Club is open to members 7 days a week and the
clubhouse is available to hire for any event by contacting our resident Bar Stewardess,
Donna Baugh. The club hosts two rooms with the main room catering for 100 people seated.
Events held at the club range from Birthday celebrations, Weddings, Christenings and
Funerals. The rooms are also available to hire for business or any organisations requiring an
inexpensive, reliable location. Catering, by pre-order, can be arranged and quoted for. We
have a fully licensed bar available to serve alcoholic beverages as well as tea and coffee. For
more Information please contact Kerry at the bar or click on the “Contact Me” button on the
club website: (www.caldicottownafc.com)
Volunteers Needed: Caldicot Town are always looking for volunteers to help out with match day preparation before and after a game (for example putting up nets to checking the playing area for rubbish). We also need volunteers to help maintain the facilities (painting and general maintenance). So, if you are able to provide assistance with maintenance tasks or donate materials please contact our maintenance manager, Chris Davidson on 07897353932.
Supporters Bus: CTAFC try to run a minibus to every Caldicot Town away game. We try to
ensure that supporters pay no more than £5 for any away trip, whether it’s just down the road
at Undy or a longer trip to Tata Steel (shorter trips help subsidise the longer ones). BUT, to
enable us to continue to run the minibus, we need as many supporters as possible to travel. If
not then we will have to start charging more for the longer trips. Tony Stephens puts up a list
of “regular” travellers a week before an away game (on the club noticeboard) so, if you are a
regular traveller, but do not wish to use the minibus, please can you cross your name off this
list ASAP! Anyone who is not a regular traveller, but would like to use the minibus can you
please add your name to the list no later than 2 days before an away game. Thank You
Request - Players and Supporters Minibus: We are looking for volunteers to drive either
the players or supporters minibus to our away games during the 2015/16 season. If you can
help in anyway please can you speak to Tony Stephens or Basil Packer.
Caldicot Leisure Centre Gym Membership Initiative: In conjunction with Caldicot Leisure
Centre and Monmouthshire Council, Caldicot Town are pleased to announce a fitness
initiative that will allow football club members reduced leisure centre Gym membership rates.
Please see the clubs website for more details.
Caldicot Town AFC Cycle Club: Caldicot Town has a ‘get fit’ initiative for its members. If you have a bike and feel that you would like to get fitter, or lose weight, then this is an ideal activity for you. Come and join the team every Sunday morning. Ask to speak to a committee member if interested or see the CTAFC Cycle Club section of the club website.
Match Day Programme: If you have any old photos or memory’s that you would like
reproduced or documented in the matchday programme please contact Kevin Buckthought at
the club. The editor would also welcome any ideas you may have to improve the programme.

Work behind the scenes: During the closed season we decided to concentrate our efforts
on the refurbishment of the lounge bar area, toilets and entrance porches to both the main
and lounge bars. We have partially completed this work but had to stop due to the roof
needing to be repaired. The roof has now been repaired (thanks to Ray Jerimiah) so we can
now complete the refurbishment. Special thanks to all who have assisted with the work
undertaken to date, we will soon be seeking more volunteers to complete the works
mentioned, so your assistance would be much appreciated. We have also put up hanging
baskets on the wall outside the front of the club, as well as painting various railings and drain
pipes. Our intentions are to paint the main stand early in the season; again your assistance in
helping with this task would be most welcome. You will also notice that we have new tables
and chairs in both the main and lounge bars; these were kindly supplied by Tesco.
Caldicot Town AFC Junior Section: Caldicot Town re-launched their junior football section
last season and are looking for players – boys and girls – in the under 11’s, under 12’s, under
14’s and under 16’s age-groups. Teams and managers are in place and the under-11’s and
under-14’s teams have started training on Friday evenings from 6.30-7.30pm. These junior
sides will complement the youth Welsh League 19’s team. All junior teams will play in the
East Gwent League. All coaches are fully qualified and CRB registered. Parents should
contact Gary Foster on 07812 583 099 for more information.
Sponsorship: If you would like to sponsor Caldicot Town AFC (e.g. match ball, kit
sponsorship, player sponsorship) then please contact Kevin Buckthought or Julian Williams,
at the club, for a list of sponsorship opportunities. Programme adverts cost £50 for half a
page or £100 for a whole page. Ball Sponsorship £60, for this you get a full seasons
membership of the club, a programme from the game which will include a dedication to you
and a half page advert in the programme (of your business) for the remainder of this season.
Caldicot Town AFC Women’s Team: After a few years absence, we welcome back a
Ladies team for the 2015/16 season; they have had some very encouraging results in their
pre-season friendlies so far. They will play in the South Wales Women & Girls League Div 2.

EDITORS NOTE: Today we welcome the players, management, committee members and supporters of Ammanford AFC to Jubilee Way for this Welsh League Division 2 fixture. Ammanford are currently second in Division 2 with twenty seven points from their 14 games. They have won eight, drawn three and lost three. They have scored thirty three and conceded twenty three. We are looking forward to a good competitive game played in a good spirit. Regardless of the result though, a warm welcome will be extended to all in the clubhouse after the game.
Due to the weather, away cup games and the “fixtures computer” it has been over 2 months
since our last home game. As programme editor it has been a funny, and difficult, season, I had
to prepare 6 home programmes in the first few week of the season yet in the period 17th October
to 19th December I have had only to prepare this one! So, as you can imagine, there has been a
lot of activity both on and off the pitch in the past 2 months, I will try and bring you all up to date;
Firstly, our bar stewardess, Kerry Rix has now gone on maternity leave, all at CTAFC wish
her (and Adrian) all the very best;
We now have a new roof over the lounge bar and, now that the new roof is on, we can
continue with the refurbishment of the lounge bar area;
On the 22nd November two of our 1st team players saw the birth of a daughter. So
congratulation to Rory Garey and Jess and Sam Watkins and Ellie on the birth of their
daughters.
Our manager was given some bad news when it was announced that James Munday will
be out for the rest of the season after the defender confirmed he had torn his ACL. The club
wish Jim a speedy recovery and hope to see him continuing with his support for the rest of
the lads on a Saturday.
Transfers Out – Since the last home match day programme the club has seen the
departure of 1st team striker Jason Thorn, who has re-signed for Sudbrook CC; 3rd team
player and former captain, Rob Keats has signed for Caldicot Castle; 1st team goalkeeper
Matt Sandiford has moved on to our local Division 2 rivals Cwmbran Celtic and 1st team
striker Steve Wilson has moved on to Blackrock. The club would like to thank all these
players for their services and would like to wish them all the very best for the future.
Transfers In - A busy couple of weeks has seen a few new signings, we have captured the
former Risca United centre forward Tony Wallis. Tony played for Cardiff City professionally
and has played for Port Talbot, Haverfordwest and Bridgend Town. Tony has an eye for a
goal and will be a valuable asset to manager Mark William’s squad. Also signing for us are
Keenan Perrett, who played for the club a couple of years back, and Murray Ross who has
been playing his football in the UAE for Dubai FC. Also joining us, from Mathern
Wanderers, is goalkeeper Joshua Harding. The club welcomes you all and wish you all the
very best for future with CTAFC.
Two weekends ago saw the 1st team get back to winning ways after suffering a run of three
successive defeats, one in the league against Undy before two cup defeats against Cwmamman
and Caerau Ely. Caldicot travelled the short distance to face Croesyceiliog at Woodland Road
and came away with the points after Richard Sharratt notched his 6th goal of the season and
Matt James with his 4th of the season put Caldicot into a comfortable 2-0 first half lead. Croesy
came out fired up for the 2nd half and made life difficult as Caldicot struggled to find the level of
performance they had shown in the first half although they did create further chances which
would have made for a less tense finish. The win saw Caldicot move into 4th place with games
in hand.

Ammanford Town: The club was founded as Betws sometime during 1945 and 1946, with its headquarters at the
Coopers Hotel, when Mr Vic Grove donated the gift of a chicken for a raffle and from the revenue came the
beginning of the club. Association football had been played at Betws in the 1920s by Ammanford Thursdays, made
up of shop assistants who were only available to play on Thursday afternoons when it was half day closing at the
shops. They played their matches on Caemawr (a council housing estate was built on this field in 1947). In the
1930s the Ammanford Corinthians, who were members of the Gwalia and Llanelli leagues, played on Betws Park.
The first team and founders of the Betws Soccer club were known as the 'Betws Blackbirds'. The first president was
Sam Roberts, Chairman: D.R. Davies, Secretary: Robert Freeman and Treasurer: Joel Williams. The Trustees were
Joe Lewis and Ben Jacob. Crad Jones and Vic Edwards were also among the early administrators of the club. In the
early years the Betws Blackbirds were playing friendly matches, before joining the Ammanford and District league:
they later joined the Carmarthenshire League. Matches were played on the present Rice Road ground, and their
dressing rooms were in the old building at the rear of the Coopers Hotel. The Betws team had tremendous local
support and the large crowds of followers turned out to watch every home game.
When the club joined the new Ammanford District League their opponents included Folland Rovers, Cathan Stars,
Tycroes, Waterloo Wanderers, Pontardulais, Brynaman, Pontyberem, Penygroes and Tairgwaith. One of the most
remarkable features of this period was that sufficient finance was obtained to purchase the playing field. It is to the
committee of that time that full credit must be given for their wisodm and initiative in negotiating the purchase of the
field. Later, the adjoining land, which was used as garden allotments, was purchased. Today it is the site of the
clubhouse; the price paid for the ground was £750. As the team continued to progress, in 1949 the need for a higher
standard of football in the locality was put forward at a meeting of the Welsh league at Bridgend. The past
performances of the disbanded Ammanford Corinthians may have played a part in the election of the club to the
Welsh League, where they played in division two (West). In 1952, the club reached the final of the West Wales
Amateur Cup, narrowly losing to Atlas Sports, Fforestfach, 3-2 on the Vetch Field, Swansea. With Mr. Danny Finch
as their manager the club finished runners up to Llanelli in the season 1957-58. The following season was very
successful: on beating rivals Carmarthen Town on Boxing Day before a huge crowd, Betws became league leaders
which they held to become champions and win promotion to the first division. They also won the division two cup,
beating the champions of division two (East), Tredomen, at Rice Road by 3 goals to 2, Betws goal scorers being
Idris Lewis (2) and Billy Abramson. The ladies supporters in their makeshift facilities in an old shed at the entrance to
the ground provided refreshments at every home game. The dedication of the ladies supporters and their
contribution to provide revenue and entertainment played a big part in the club finance. Along with the hard working
committee members, there were many unmentioned helpers who all contributed in keeping the soccer flag flying.
The club also provided a darts, tennis and cricket section. On Saturday 22 August 1959, the club played its opening
fixture in the first division of the Welsh League at home before a packed ground against Cardiff City, whom they beat
by 2 goals to 1. On this memorable day for the club, the Betws team was: Harrison, H. Williams, D. Jones, Lee,
Scrine, Stead, Chennard, Lewis, T. Williams, Loftus and Abramson. Stead (penalty) and T. Williams being the
scorers. By the end of the season, the club finished in the bottom half of the division and the following season being
relegated. Name change: There were other teams playing in the league under the name of Betws. In order to avoid
the confusion over identification of previous seasons, a request by the Welsh League in 1960 resulted in the club
changing its name to Ammanford Town. Through the loyal support of their followers the club, having built a
clubhouse in 1963, expanded in 1967 by building a stand, changing rooms and showers at a cost of £4,000. In 1964,
the club appointed Roy Saunders as their player manager, the former Liverpool and Swansea Town player. It was
the time during his association with the club that proved it’s most successful. In season 1965-66 they became
champions of division one, and the following two seasons became runners up of the Premier Division, to Cardiff City
on both occasions. Now it could be seen that 'the village beyond the river' was really amongst the giants of Welsh
league football. Local players in the town team were Mike Lewis and Ioan Rees who have given valuable service,
whilst goalkeeper Dai Davies went on to play for Swansea, Everton, Wrexham and Wales. In 1969, Roy Saunders
left the club to take up a coaching appointment to Swansea Town. Upon the departure of Roy Saunders, Evan
Powell took over as manager assisted by Myrddin Price as secretary. On the cup scene, the biggest day was in
January 1991 when they played at home in the 4th round of the Welsh Cup against Wrexham. In atrocious weather
conditions, 'Town' put up a gutsy performance but lost 5-0 to their more experienced opponents. Merger: In the
1980s, with growing recession and the decline in the club's fortunes with poor attendances, they did, for financial
reasons, consider withdrawing from the Welsh League. However, the club were still members of the league at the
end of the millennium having amalgamated with local Ammanford Athletic A.F.C. in 1992. During the 1998-99
season the club reached the quarterfinals of both the Welsh Cup and the Flocon Cup, securing a return to Division
1. In preparation for this return, joint team managers Neil Petherbridge and Wynne Jones assembled a team
consisting mainly of local lads. They put into motion plans to develop the Rice Road facilities, bringing them up to
modern day standards.

Sat 21 Nov 2015 - League Cup Rd 2: Caerau Ely 1-0 Caldicot Town
Report by Mark Anderson
At the fourth attempt of asking this second round match finally got underway at Caerau
Ely and it would be the first division champions of last season that would seal their place
in the third round after Jamal Roberts scored from the spot in the first half. Both sides
observed a minutes applause in memory of Mark Sim who lost his life in a workplace
accident at the Celsa Steel work. A big thanks to our hosts for allowing the club this
moment of reflection for Mark who helped coach the Under 14's side.
With the news of a recent departure in Jason Thorn to Sudbrook CC and then
surprisingly Matt Sandiford to Cwmbran Celtic (Rumour has it he didn't like the new pink
kit!), it was good to see some new faces making their debuts for the Town in the form of
striker Tony Wallis from Risca United, as well as midfielder Murray Ross who has been
playing in Dubai and lastly Keenan Perrett from Sudbrook. The game was underway
with Caldicot lining up with Davidson in goal, Palmer, Jeremiah, James, Harvey,
Sharratt, Perrett, Smith, Ross, Slape, Wallis. Both teams settled quite well and did not
look to rusty due to the inactivity caused by recent weather. Ely looked sharp especially
down the left side as the tricky Jamal Roberts looked to give Caldicot's defence the run
around on a pitch that was heavy but not bad enough to cut up. New signings Murray
Ross and Keenan Perrett looked good with Ross in the holding role playing the ball
simply to his team mates whilst Perrett looked fleet footed going forward showing good
dribbling technique. On Caldicot's left side Ollie Smith also continues to impress with his
energy and his ability to go back as quick as goes forward but now Caldicot need to
start scoring. Former Caldicot favourite David Biggs was marshalling the home defence
and had to pay to get back in at one stage as Big Mitchell Slape gave him the eyes
before turning him inside out (Sorry Biggs....had to be mentioned!) .Caerau were
starting to keep Caldicot in their own half and were carving out a couple of half chances,
one of which was a goal line clearance from a corner. Caldicot were finding it difficult to
build up a head of steam and keeping possession when the ball was played forward
was proving difficult as Slape and Wallis tried to gain an understanding of each other
movements in order to form a partnership of choice. Caldicot came close to scoring
through a Richard Sharratt free kick and a half chance header from Tony Wallis but
apart from that they were struggling to create the opportunities. The breakthrough came
after the Caerau forward showed a great turn of pace leaving a couple of Caldicot
defenders before being upended by Harvey for a nailed on penalty which Jamal Roberts
tucked away to make it 1-0 at the break. The second half saw Caldicot attempt to get a
foothold in the game but an unfortunate ankle sprain to Shane Jeremiah saw him
replaced eventually with Crook going into the defence. Caldicot's frustration continued
as they searched for an opening but Caerau were well drilled and so it is hard to be to
critical especially as they were playing the current Welsh League champions. As time
wore on the home team were awarded a second penalty after a scramble in the box the
ball broke for Ely and Ben Davidson brought down the player rightly picking up a yellow
and not a red. Davidson held his nerve and stayed up right and it paid off as he
guessed right to save Jamal Roberts second penalty attempt.
Time was running out fast for Caldicot now and a flurry of substitutes saw little change
in the pattern of play as Caldicot surged forward in search of the elusive equaliser. Ely
however were showing that they were not going to give this game away although
judging by Nana Ba berating his own supporters he must have been feeling some
pressure but his team saw the game out to progress to the third round of the cup
