A Message from the Superintendent of SchoolsWelcome back to a new school year filled with excitement, opportunities and a commitment from our employees that we will do our best to serve your children. We have made great strides at South San Antonio ISD with the development of an early

college academy, improvements in STAAR test scores and maintaining a fiscally sound budget. The incoming freshman class will mark the beginning of our early college academy where all students will have the potential to attain college credit. The vision of the district, which was created by teachers, parents, administrators and community members, is to empower our students so they may create their future. With guidance from teachers, counselors and family members, our students will choose a pathway that will strengthen that foundation for their prospective careers. Our goal is for every student to be college and career ready and acquire the skills to be successful in the ever-changing dynamics of today’s workplace. Regarding state testing, the majority of our schools are predicted to meet 2015 State Accountability Standards with the final results revealed in mid-August. There were many successes at our campuses, but there is still much work to be done to close the gap between our district and the state. We have reached many goals regarding our district budget, including the growth of our fund balance and a pay raise for employees in order to stay competitive in the Bexar County educational market.

I would like to thank all of our employees for their hard work in preparing our schools for the upcoming year and our Board of Trustees for their leadership and cooperation in providing the best education and resources for our students. I have high expectations for our students, staff and community in becoming a premiere school district in the state of Texas. Have a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Abelardo Saavedra, Ph.D.Superintendent of Schools

A Message from the Board President On behalf of the South San Antonio ISD school board, I would like to welcome you back for another exciting school year. I hope everyone had a restful and fun-filled summer break with family and friends.

This is an exciting time for South San. Children will be walking our hallways for the first time as Pre-K or K students. At the same time, the first group of Early College High School freshmen will be faced with new challenges. This group of past eight graders will be the first group of ninth graders to start their career paths in anticipation of receiving a high school diploma along with either an Associate’s Degree, college hours or a career certification. We are committed to ensure all our students have the resources, tools and materials necessary to help them succeed.

This school year we will once again be challenged by the State in all test areas to “step up” and make the grade. We can succeed with the help of our parents, community and our dedicated staff. “Si se puede.” Every child in our school district can succeed!

Our custodial, maintenance and cafeteria staff have worked very hard to ensure our schools are ready.

Once again, every school will have their own security officer. The safety of every child and staff member in our schools is extremely important.

For the first time, we have a unified dress code for all elementaries, middle schools, and the high school. Also, a unified supply list has been approved. Look on the school district’s website (www.southsanisd.net) for details or check with your school.

Best wishes to our students, parent and all employees for a successful school year!

Sincerely,

Connie Prado, PresidentSouth San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees

Abelardo Saavedra , Ph.D.

School Board Meeting Highlights

During the Wednesday, June 24, 2015 board meeting, the Board approved a resolution pertaining to HB1486 and HB1931 which were introduced in the last session of the State Legislature. HB1486 prohibits vendor contact with a member of the board of trustees of an

independent school district during the procurement process. HB1931 involves reporting requirements for gift or entertainment expenditures made by a person for a member of the board of trustees of an independent school district. Even though the state did not adopt these bills, our Board Members will adhere to the intent and spirit of the proposed legislation. A local policy will be presented to the school board at the September 2015 Regular Board Meeting for approval. The June 24th Resolution was approved by our Board of Trustees on a 4-3 vote. For more information, click on Board approved minutes for the month of June at www.southsanisd.net.

My name is Judy Benavidez and this is my 15th year in education. Eleven of those years were spent at San Antonio ISD where I taught prekindergarten, second, and fourth grades. I was a Campus Instructional Coordinator before becoming an Assistant Principal at the largest elementary in SAISD.

I am a native of San Antonio and graduated from Oliver Wendell Holmes High School. I earned my Bachelor of Arts and my first Master of Arts from the University of the Incarnate Word. While working as a teacher, I was nominated and encouraged to participate in the San Antonio ISD / University of Texas at San Antonio- Urban Leadership Cohort where I earned my second Master of Education in Educational Leadership.

I have been married for 24 years and have three amazing daughters. My oldest, Catherine, is a recent graduate of UT Austin and works with U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett. Gabriella graduated from John Marshall High School and will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio this fall and Anna is a junior at the Science and Engineering Academy at John Jay High School.

I am extremely excited and I look forward to building a positive partnership among my teachers, families, and community to provide an exceptional educational experience where each child is empowered to

develop their strengths to acquire the skills necessary for them to achieve success in academics and in life.

Johnny Diaz, Benavidez ES

My name is Johnny Angel Diaz, and my journey includes over 24 years serving San Antonio youth. I began working with the Boy Scouts of America as a District Executive. Louis Edward James II, South San Antonio HS

My name is Louis Edward James II and I am the new Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach at South San Antonio HS. This will be my 11th year in education, and I have spent all of those 11 years teaching, coaching, and winning at the high school level.

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but I graduated from John Marshall High School here in San Antonio. I am also a 2004 graduate of UTSA. My wife, Chante, and I have been married for over 4 years. I have a 10 year old stepson named Luke, and he will be a 5th grader at Medio Creek Elementary School this upcoming school year.

My vision is not only to turn the South San Football Program into one of the most competitive programs in South Texas, but also to help the other athletic programs experience large amounts of success as well. I believe our mission as coaches is to help our student-athletes become better students, better brothers and sisters, better mothers and fathers, better husbands and wives, and the better athletes. The ultimate goal is for all student-athletes to compete at a level so hard, so physical, and so fast that people can’t match our efforts in the field or in the classroom. We will take on anyone, any place, or anytime...Bar None! Go Bobcats!

Evelyn Pineda, South San Antonio HS

My name is Evelyn Pineda and I am the new head volleyball coach at South San Antonio HS. I was born in Los Angeles, CA and moved to San Antonio in 1999. I graduated from Holmes HS in 2006, where I played volleyball and was awarded best Defensive Specialist two years and the best Defensive Specialist at the Harlandale tournament.

After high school, I played my first two years at Laredo Community College, where I was awarded the Coach Award. I then transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio where I was again awarded the Roadrunners’ Spirit Award for two more years, as well as the Inspiration Award in 2010. I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, and entered the graduate program in Education at UTSA.

However, graduation did not put an end to my passion for volleyball. I coached for UTSA camps (2009-2012), Cotulla (2008), YMCA (2006-2012), and still coach for Impact (2009-2015). In 2012, I was the head volleyball coach for Atonement Academy in San Antonio with an overall record of 20-8. We won first place at the Sunnybrook Academy tournament and went to the T-Cal State semi-final making history for the Atonement Athletic Program.

In 2013, I graduated with my Master of Arts in Education and accepted a position at South San Antonio HS. As the new head volleyball coach, I want to not only instill the passion for the sport, but to teach my athletes to become well-rounded citizens by being loyal, honest and determined in all aspects of their life.
