TODAY’S READINGS
n the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Every time we make the Sign of the Cross, we
acknowledge the central mystery of the Christian faith: that our God is three divine Persons in one God. It is the one statement that separates us from all of the other religions in the world, and it is the foundation for everything else that we profess and believe as Catholics.
But the teaching of the Trinity really explains much more than mere metaphysical propositions. It tells us about the inner life of God—the intimate love and communion that are constantly flowing between the Father, Son, and Spirit. God is far from an isolated being or uninvolved deity. His very existence has to do with relationships.
If it is God’s nature to share himself, and if we are created in his image, it follows that we too are meant to share our lives with each other. As Paul reminds us, we are the body of Christ, and a body “is not a single part, but many.” (1 Corinthians 12:14). We were built to be in communion with one another, joining together to build the kingdom and to proclaim the gospel to all of creation. It’s a tall order, and anyone who has tried to do it alone knows that it just doesn’t work!
But the Trinity is more than just a model for togetherness: it also gives us the power to live it! We really can love one another as fully as Jesus loves us—if we draw from the love of God that has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Jesus promises that as we deepen our relationship with one another, our lives will start to reflect the very life of the Trinity—and that’s how we can experience the joy we are meant to know as Christians!
“Holy Spirit, draw us all into the love that you share with the Father and the Son! Stir up your gifts within us, so that we may pour out that same love on one another!”

Trinidad cuando dijo “Todo lo que el Padre tiene es mío también”, y cuando anunció que el Espíritu Santo nos daría a conocer todo lo verdadero y glorioso de Dios. Lo maravilloso es que Dios ama tanto a sus hijos que comparte todo con ellos, sin reservarse nada, e invita a los seres humanos, aunque somos pecadores, a participar de su vida divina.
La Escritura dice que el Padre y el Hijo enviaron al Espíritu Santo a guiarnos a toda la verdad, a fin de que conociéramos los misterios del Evangelio y la gloriosa realidad de la Santísima Trinidad. Esta es una verdad que San Pablo expresó claramente cuando escribió: “Que la gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios y la presencia constante del Espíritu Santo estén con todos ustedes” (2 Corintios 13,14).
¡Qué gran amor es que el Padre haya sacrificado a su Hijo para restituir nuestra herencia de hijos de Dios! ¡Qué asombroso es que el Espíritu Santo venga a vivir en los creyentes como consolador y maestro! En efecto, hemos recibido la redención y la misericordia que nos ha dado nuestro Dios Todopoderoso, y ahora podemos vivir como el Señor lo quiso desde el principio de la creación.
Hoy no celebramos una verdad abstracta, sino una realidad viva. Dios quiere que experimentemos su amor, recibamos la salud que fluye de la victoria de Jesús sobre el mal y seamos transformados por la revelación de la verdad divina. Nuestro Dios nos ama en forma personal y cuida todos los detalles de nuestra vida; por eso ten la certeza de que hoy mismo puedes experimentar su presencia y su poder; ten el corazón y los ojos abiertos, porque Dios se te revelará de alguna manera, quizá en la forma menos esperada.

MEMORIAL DAY – Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day, a federal holiday. Masses will be celebrated at 8am and 12:10pm only. Following the Cathedral’s federal holiday schedule, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will not be celebrated. FIRST SATURDAY – On Saturday, June 1 all are welcome to participate in First Saturday Devotions, led by Fr. Hurley after the 12:10pm Mass, followed by Hospitality in the West Conference Room. First Friday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be held following the 12:10pm Mass until 5pm next Friday, June 7 (see the flyer). CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION – Next Sunday, June 2 is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. All are invited to join us as we celebrate with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament in the streets of Washington following the 1pm Mass and concluding with benediction upon our return to the Cathedral. This centuries‐old tradition is a beautiful expression of our faith in the Eucharist and a powerful witness to our Catholic identity visible to our neighbors. SCHOLA CANTORUM SUMMER HIATUS – Next Sunday, June 2 is the last Sunday of the season for the Schola Cantorum. We sincerely hope they have lifted your spirits and touched your souls. They will return on Sunday, September 8, at the 10am and 11:30am Masses. Stay tuned for news about their exciting fall season of special musical events! Happy Summer! BOOK CLUB: A Tale of Two Cities – St. Matthew's Book Club will meet on Monday, June 10 to discuss Charles Dickens' classic novel A Tale of Two Cities. Set during the French Revolution in London and Paris, it follows the plight of the French peasantry in the time before the revolution, and depicts the brutality of the events that transpired after the revolution. CELEBRATING MARRIAGE Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.
CELEBRATING BAPTISM
Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 x555 or [email protected]. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.
TOURS Visitors are invited to schedule a guided tour of the Cathedral or to take a self‐guided tour using the color brochures available at the inside entrance to the Cathedral. Guided tours are given free of charge. Donations to the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle are always appreciated and may be given to your tour guide or our Rectory receptionist. Take the elevator up to the Cathedral level. A sign language interpreter is present at the Sunday 11:30am Mass and at special liturgies throughout the year.
