Today’s Sermon Topics
Morning Sermon: The Heart Of The Willing — I Samuel 16:13 Evening Sermon: Question & Answer — Hebrews 11:6
The Big Blue Box
We, as Christians, need to show con-cern for our brethren and others. If you know of someone who needs checking on, has problems in their life, etc. write out the information and put it in the Blue Box in the foyer. David Mar-tin is overseeing this good work.
The Big Black Box
Every 3rd Sunday evening, Jim-my will have a Questions & An-swers session. You can submit Biblical questions by placing them in the Big Black Box in the foyer. These questions will be dealt with in the order they are received.
In 1 Samuel 16, David is called to be king over Israel. Israel had been ruled by judges for about 330 years. Then, they demanded a king and Saul was anointed as the first king. Saul’s reign began with promise but ended in faithlessness (1 Sam. 16:14). When we read the story of David’s calling, we see several applications for Christians today. The greatest of those applications is the need to answer God’s call. To put it another, the need for a willing heart. 1. Who can receive the call? A. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said: “if any ________.” 1. Jesus had called men to be disciples from various walks of life. (Mark 1:16-20; Matt. 9:9; Acts 26:5, 16) 2. Jesus had extended the “Great Invitation” to those who had already __________________ Him. (Matt. 11:28-30) B. God is no respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34-35) 1. _______ ________ today can receive the call of Christ despite background and social standing. (Jude 3) 2. This should thrill the soul! 2. How does one receive the call? A. Is this call __________, or indirect? 1. If the call is direct, then why are so many ____________? 2. If the call is indirect, then how are we called? B. We know that Christ did call some directly. 1. Zacchaeus was called directly. (Luke 19:1-10) 2. Paul was called directly. (1 Cor. 1:1; Acts 26:15-16) C. How is one called today? 1. One is not called through a direct operation from heaven, but through the preaching of the _________. (1 Cor. 1:18; Rom.1:16) 2. It is only through the call of the gospel that Christ reveals: a. Our _________ condition. (1 Cor. 15:1-3) b. The possibility of a ________ life. (Eph. 2:1) 3. An example of the call. (2 Thess. 2:13-14) 3. How does one answer the call? A. If one is called by the gospel, one answers the call by ___________ the gospel. 1. The Corinthians were called to be “saints”, or disciples. (1 Cor. 1:2) 2. However, they did not become disciples until they obeyed the gospel. (Acts 18:8) B. One cannot be a disciple of Christ until the call has been ______________.
