TOBIAS DALLIN--THE ENGLAND YEARS Beth Davies AG ®1 Tobias Dallin was born in Ilfracombe, Devonshire, England on Jan. 28, 1806, 2 and was christened in the Church of England at Ilfracombe on 23 Feb. 1806, the son of Tobias and Mary Dallin 3 His father was a sailmaker and Tobias and his brothers would follow that trade when they grew to manhood. His brother John remained in Ilfracombe. 4 His brother Thomas moved to Bristol 5 and members of Thomas’ family were engaged in the sail making trade as late as 1926. 6 This Tobias bore the name of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, all of whom had lived in Ilfracombe. The surname Dallin had been in the Church of England parish records of Ilfracombe since 1594 7 . Ilfracombe was a seaport and the sea dominated the life of its people. History of Ilfracombe by Lois Lamplugh gives these insights to the town near the time that Tobias was growing up: "During the 18th century the number of vessels owned at Ilfracombe increased fourfold, from 15 to 60, and the total tonnage increase from 350 to 1,615, figure which do not include the smallest fishing boats and the craft of the hobblers, the boatmen who towed ships into harbour and serviced them . . . During this century Ilfracombe had a number of open boats engaged in fishing, principally for herring, but it was necessarily a fluctuating trade; in years when shoals deserted the western coasts, the people of a port such as Ilfracombe knew hardship . . . Shipbuilding, it would seem, offered a steadier occupation than fishing. Between 1735 . . . and 1800, no fewer than 60 brigantines, sloops, schooners, smacks and skiffs were launched into the harbour . . . It was shipbuilding on a very limited scale, with on average two small ships leaving the yard each
