The UK is made up of many races, cultures and

RELIGIONS...

Before WW2 there were few people who

followed a religion other than Christianity...

WHY DID THIS CHANGE?

The UK called upon members of the

Commonwealth to help rebuild Britain.

In the 60’s and 70’s there was a large influx of people from India,

Bangladesh and Pakistan.This led to a growth in

Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.

The ADVANTAGESof a multi-faith

society...People can learn about other religions – it can help them to see what

religions have in common. People are more likely to be more understanding, tolerant, and respectful

to other religions.

RELGIOUS FREEDOM –religious groups will be able to live peacefully

together.

It helps to stop religious conflict and tension – e.g.

Islamaphobia

It makes people think more about religion and

their own beliefs.

New ways of living and enjoying life – e.g. Yoga,

dancing, meditation...

Mind map some of the ADVANTAGES of living in a multi-faith society. Think back to the advantages of living in a

multi-ethnic society to help you.

RELIGIOUS PLURALISM

• Many religions lead to God

• People should have FREEDOM to worship any

religion OR none.

It has not been easy for the UK to become a multi-faith society. There have been many instances over the years of religious tension and religious motivated violence and hate crimes (like in the starter activity).

Most believers (and non-believers) in the UK accept that people should be allowed to follow whatever religion they want. However some people are not so sure and think that their religion is the right one and that EVERYONE should follow it.

There are THREE main views...

INCLUSIVISM

AND

EXCLUSIVISM

lead to further issues in society...

INCLUSIVISM

• Only ONE religion is completely right.

• Other religions should be RESPECTED but people should be encouraged to

CONVERT.

EXCLUSIVISM

• Only ONE religion is right the rest are

WRONG.• Members of the RIGHT faith should CONVERT the rest.

When believers from different religions live together in one place there can be issues if one religious group tries to convert another.

crimes and discrimination.

Dear Deirdre,

I'm a Christian guy who loves a

Muslim girl and we have been in a

relationship for about 3 years.

Everything was going smoothly

until we had a discussion about

marriage and future plans.

The problem is that I am sure her

parents would not agree to us

marrying. The only option is to get

secretly married and reveal it at

right time to her parents (this

might prove costly as I'm sure her

family would react badly to the

news).

Secondly, the issue is how our kids

will be raised. Though she agreed

that she doesn't mind our kids being

raised Christian, she said she

wouldn't help me in doing so. I

personally feel that kids should be

nurtured under a single religion and

both the parents should actively

participate in this activity.

I don't know what to do and am

really confused about the whole

thing. I’ve tried talking to her but we

always end up arguing and the issue

is never resolved.

Though multi-faith marriages are believed by some to create issues in a multi-faith society they are also believed to have

advantages and help promote community cohesion.

List 3 ADVANTAGES and 3 DISADVANTAGES of multi-faith marriages.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGESThey promote racial harmony as they show different religions and cututres

can co-exist and are compatible.

They highlight the differences between religions cultures and practices. E.g. –

which ceremony to follow.

They bring two different religious families together, making bonds between

religious communities.

They can cause religious conflict and tension. E.g. Couples are unsure which

religion is the best for their children to follow.

They promote tolerance, understanding and respect between two different

religions.

The two religious families may object to their children marrying someone of a

different faith, causing religious tension.
