he Finger Lakes and wineries go together likepeanut butter and jelly. But what if you prefer your beverages to

have a certain maltiness with subtle hoppyovertones? The answer is easy – it’s called the Finger

Lakes Beer Trail.Currently, more than 90 breweries are listed on the Fin-

ger Lakes Beer Trail website – with six of them callingKeuka Lake home. That number has been steadily increas-ing over the last few years.“We don’t view it as competition - we see it as something

that brings more people into the area,” said Mark Goodwin,co-owner of Finger Lakes Beer Co. “We view it as a goodthing.”Finger Lakes Beer Co., located at 8462 Rt. 54, at the

southern base of Keuka, is one of the older breweries in the area.“We were the second when we opened six years ago,”

Goodwin said.Joining Finger Lakes Beer Co. on the southern tip of the

lake is the Brewery of Broken Dreams – located at 8319Pleasant Valley Road. The theory - The more, the merrier – seems to apply here.Chad Zimar, vice president and brewmaster at Steuben

Brewing Company – located at 10286 Judson Road - concurs.“It’s exciting to be a part of the scene. Each brewery can

feed off of each other,” Zimar said. “It’s a friendly

atmosphere.”As with winery tours, breweries enjoy having patrons go

from place to place to try the different offerings available.“Having several breweries in the area gives people sev-

eral to go to – more to visit – which generates more of acrowd,” Zimar said.“We see people taking beer tours in limos,” added Goodwin.

here are many thingsthat make Mossy BankPark in Bath appealing.

Anne Keddy is thechairperson of the MossyBank Park committee

and acts as its facilitator.“I think the woods setting is one of

the special features,” Keddy said. “Theoverlook is a huge draw. It’s just beau-

tiful to look over the valley and see thewhole village of Bath. There’s a lot ofnature trails that we’ve worked hardon developing so that they lead peopleto special features in nature.”

Keddy said there a total of eighttrails at the park.

One common misconception aboutMossy Bank Park is the times that it isaccessible to the public. It is in fact

open all year round, but not open to ve-hicles. The park is open to vehiclesfrom May 1 through Oct. 14 from 10a.m. until 10 p.m.

Keddy said new signs will go up inorder to try to clear up some of the confusion.

Ukrainian-born Founder Dr. Kon-stantin Frank set a high-standardwhen he discovered how to grow Eu-ropean wine grapes in cold northeast-ern climates in the 1950’s, bafflingcritics and igniting a winemakingrenaissance throughout New York. In1962, he established Dr. KonstantinFrank Vinifera Wine Cellars onKeuka Lake and began introducingNorthern European-style wines to theregion. The Finger Lakes have neverbeen the same.

Some 50 years later, Dr. Frank isregarded as the father of the “ViniferaRevolution,” a statewide industry-shift towards vinifera grapes creditedwith propelling New York’s wine re-gions among the nation’s elite.

“These European grapes are grown

the world-over, not just in Europe,” Dr.Frank’s President Dr. Frank’s said.“Now that we’re growing these pre-mium wine grapes, we can competewith the best world wine regions.”

To show for all of this, Dr. Frank’svariety of Rieslings have won awardsthe world over, and its other offeringsaren’t that far behind. In 2015 alone,Dr. Frank’s took home a staggering 110 gold medals. Its vine-yards on Keuka and Seneca Lakegrow assortments of premium Euro-pean wine grapes, with varieties suchas Georgian Rkatsiteli that are morecommon in Eastern Europe than theU.S. The winery has become a top Fin-ger Lakes destination, with a wine list

On Saturday, May 21 and Sunday,May 22, St. Thomas’ Episcopal Churchat 122 Liberty Street in Bath, will par-ticipate in The New York LandmarksConservancy’s Sacred Sites Open Houseweekend. The church will be open fortours both dates 2-5 p.m.The congregation at this crossroads

of downtown Bath just celebrated theirbicentennial in 2015. The second-oldestparish in Bath, the current 1869 build-ing has been a Bath landmark knownfor its tall spire and its red doors. De-signed by English-born architect HenryDudley (1813-1894), the church is on theNational Register for Historic Proper-ties and is also listed as a local land-mark being part of the downtownhistoric district.Dudley designed over 150 churches

and was a charter member of the Amer-ican Institute of Architects. He pro-moted Gothic Revival as the onlyacceptable style for an AmericanChurch and to this day, most people

think of Gothic revival when they think“church.”The current building, the parish’s

second structure, was designed in thewith many medieval cathedral qualitiesincluding Onondaga limestone exterior,steeply-pitched roofs, buttresses, stained glass windows and a cathedral-like interior. Inside, participants willsee not only the impressive church inte-rior including 16th century paintings byItalian Masters, but also a newly reno-vated Chapel space and other rooms.

Both guided and self-guided tours willbe available. There is no fee for thetours; a donation toward restorations ef-forts is optional.St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church will be

one of dozens of religious institutionsthroughout New Your State participat-ing in the Open House weekend May 21and 22. Since 1986 The New York Land-marks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites pro-gram has supported more than 750religious institutions throughout thestate which have received over $9.3 mil-lion in matching grants. Sacred Sites isthe country’s oldest and largeststatewide grant program to help land-mark religious properties. St. Thomas’Church has launched a capital cam-paign to put a new roof on the nave ofthe church as well as window repairs. and multi-generational history thathave captured the hearts of experts andwine-lovers far-and-wide.

Getting this far was the result ofthree generations of contribution, eachera engineering their own touch to Dr.Konstantin Frank’s legacy. Konstantin’sson Willy Frank championed Dr.Frank’s award-winning line of sparklingwines. When Willy’s son and currentpresident Fred Frank succeeded in1993, he began a long process of ex-panding the business. The winery hasplanted new vineyards, won a multitudeof awards, and crafted its popularSalmon Run value-brand while Fredhas been at the helm.

Now, the winery is envisioning a fu-ture where people not only come for thewine, but also for the stunning viewsand atmospheric-embodiment of wineand culture in the Finger Lakes.

“We’ve put the hard work in,” Franksaid. “And now we kind of have to finetune things and get more of wine loversaround the country to recognize the Finger Lakes as a wonderful wine re-gion to visit.”

Additions to its facilities and further-enhancement of its core experiences arecurrently in the works - a foundation forexpanding in new directions. However, perhaps the most exciting developmentcoming out of the past few years is thatanother familiar face will oversee Dr.Frank’s vision for wine and the FingerLakes throughout the coming decades.

In 2013, it secured its fourth genera-tion of family leadership when Fred’sdaughter Meaghan Frank joined thefamily business as general manager.

Soaking in as much knowledge asshe can under the guidance and leader-ship of her father, Meaghan Frank isnext in line to take over one day. Ac-cording to Fred Frank, she is alreadyahead of the curve.

“Meaghan has already contributedgreatly, bringing new ideas from herstudies and work, and also just lookingat things with a fresh set of eyes,” FredFrank said. “She’s kind of shakingthings up a bit, and getting us to thinkoutside the box so-to-speak.”

This includes contributing to her andher father’s shared-vision of expansion. With the Finger Lake’s reputation onthe rise, the focus now for the businessis to further enhance its experience for

visitors coming for a taste of what thearea has to offer.

“One of the things we’re working to-wards for the future is expanding cus-tomer experiences,” Meaghan Franksaid. “So to really give people an amaz-ing experience while they’re here visit-ing us in the home of our brand.”

The beginning of this expansion hasbegun to materialize with a new tastingroom under construction at Dr. Frank’ssparkling winery, just a short walkdown the road from its main complex.Once occupied by the now-defunct West-ern New York Wine Company through-out the early 1900s, Willie Frankacquired the property in the 1980’s.

He utilized the old building’s pre-ex-isting champagne cellars to create atrue méthode champenoise sparklingwine in the Finger Lakes - a styleachieved through a secondary fermen-tation inside the bottle. He named thebuilding Chateau Frank. Offerings suchas Chateau Frank’s Blanc de Blancs arewell endowed.

Chateau Frank is exclusively utilizedfor its production facilities, where sea-soned winemakers like Eric Baumanand Bill Whiting continue the time-hon-ored production process. A meticulousset of intangibles - “Liqueur de tirage”for fermentation and riddling after thebottles have spent years left on yeast, todégorgement and final corking - must bemet for a bottle to make its journey fromthe production room to the tasting room.

A building with rich history and tra-dition, Chateau Frank is expected totake on another role soon with the tast-ing room expected to open this summer.

“We’re going to be starting our re-serve tasting experience… which willhopefully be operational by the sum-mer,” Meaghan Frank said. “We’re look-

ing at a June start date.” The room is being renovated to re-

flect features of a vintage Finger Lakeshillside-chateau, but accented with thesophistication of a relaxing upscalecocktail lounge. Wooden flooring andstone-walls provide an old-world charm, while modernized pendant lighting anda planned glass-panel door will promotea classic, yet contemporary atmosphere.

The goal for the project is to make acomfortable and enjoyable space wherevisitors can sit down and unwind for awine and food tasting following a de-tailed winery tour.

“We’re going to be offering in-depthtours of the vineyard and the winemak-ing process and leading up to a food andwine experience,” she said. “So havingsome cheese, some chocolate, nuts, thingslike that to enhance the experience.”

Despite having established itselfover the last half-century, MeaghanFrank aspires to take Dr. Frank’s evenfurther. Now is the time she said, as theconditions may be better than ever.

“We’re in a really good place,” shesaid. “The Finger Lakes; the region hasbeen looked at as one of the top produc-ers of Riesling in the country. So we’reat a stage now that I feel consumers arerecognizing the region for quality, andit’s really a great time.”

“Meaghan has a great background, and she’s going to take the winery to thenext level,” Fred Frank said. “Each gen-eration of the family has contributed intheir own way.”

Dr. Konstantin’s original vision forNew York’s wine industry is the enginethat drives the family business forwardto this day. Each generation to receivethe baton adds their own personal touchto the legacy of the man credited withputting the Finger Lakes on the map.

A lot has changed in the world sinceDr. Konstantin opened shop 54 yearsago. People and places have come andgone, yet his namesake business isn’t allmuch different when you set aside itsgrowth. Under one family and vision,Dr. Frank’s has aged like fine wine.

“When you plant vineyards, youplant really for a generation,” MeaghanFrank said. “So he planted vineyards forme; I hope to plant vineyards for mychildren, because it’s a 50-100 year in-vestment. It’s a very long investment, and I think that’s why family busi-nesses have been successful in the wineindustry, specifically in the old world, because you’re really looking towardsthe future.”
