Dear MOPC family, Worship is the most important thing we do as a church. It is the one time we all come together before the Lord. You might notice some new hap-penings in our worship services.

• Josh Sawyer is the new music leader at our 11 a.m.. service. He will lead the band about 80% of the time, and Chad Whitehead, who is the director of that service and does all the background and foundational planning, will lead the other times.

• At both 8:30 and 11:00 we will occasionally share in Affirma-tions of Faith. We will say one of the historic creeds of Christianity, or a passage of Scripture. We do this with one voice, and as a way of reminding ourselves who we are, what we are about, and the convictions we hold dear.

• We will often have times of silent reflec-tion after a reading from scripture. Our

non-reflective society teaches us to read and listen for information. We haven’t learned to read and listen re-flectively. The silence is a way of allowing the words of Scripture to get into our hearts, and for us to become

attentive to the written Word of God. • At The Mount, where there is a great

deal of freedom in the forms of worship, we have begun to take Communion with everyone coming to the front and gather-

ing around the table. We pass the bread and cup to one another while standing around the table. If you have never experienced Communion like this, it has a very intimate feeling and refreshes what it means to be part of the body of Christ.

We want our worship, no matter what the style, to be meaningful and open to the pres-ence of the Holy Spirit. May God meet us, and may we meet him, every Sunday. In His Grace,

Philip

You might notice some

new happenings in our worship

services.

Josh Sawyer is our new music leader for the 11 a.m. contemporary service. Josh and his wife, Briana, moved from California and came to Salt Lake City last summer. We believe the Lord guided us to Josh, and Josh to us. All four candidates we auditioned of-fered many strong gifts. However, we thought a key factor was that Josh is already a part of the MOPC community. Josh is a strong vocalist and guitarist, leads with a gentle and humble demeanor, and has al-ready become popular with Praise Band members who have appreciated his leadership. We welcome him.

Adult Sunday School Nooma will be back this summer with new teachers and new topics. These DVDs by Rob Bell are a series of short films that explore the world from the perspective of Jesus. It is ideal for summer be-cause each class stands alone. Join us for thought provoking ideas and lively discussions. They are guaranteed to give you a new awareness of God’s presence in everyday matters. Same Kind of Different as Me This book about the unlikely friendship between an international art dealer and a homeless man is truly a thoughtful examination of the power of God to bridge differences and bring unexpected love into vastly different lives. Barbara Kuipers will lead the discussion of this book in Sunday School July 18th and 25th. The book is available at the county library; you might want to put your name on the hold list now. It is available as an e-book. We will also have copies available for a donation of $10 in the church office. Coming this Fall: The Hole in Our Gospel Does our gospel really have a hole in it? What does that even mean? This September and October our sermons and Sunday School will attempt to answer these questions as we study this life-changing book by Richard Stearns, the President of World Vision, a humanitarian organization that tackles poverty and injustice globally. We will have this book available for you in mid-July. As Luci Swindoll says, “Brace yourself…this is one powerhouse book.”

Women’s Bible Study We will return with a new series in the Fall.

Men’s Discipleship The Thursday morning Men’s Discipleship Group, led by Pastor Phil, will not meet in June or July. We will start again in August. Look for announcements of starting date. The Tuesday group will continue to meet at Einstein’s at 6:30 a.m..

Senior Adult Fellowship Thank you one and all for a great SAF season. Each month the food, fun and fellowship found joy on faces, as we shared together. See you in September.

Dear MOPC family, We have been carried along through these past couple of months by your prayers, your calls, your kind gifts of flowers and plants and almost countless cards. The death of our mother, Olive Rinehart, was not expected, but your support and love has enabled us to rejoice that she is safely home with our Lord and Savior. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and sympathy. You are indeed a great inspiration to us. With much love in Christ, Kathy and John Terrion

MOPC Summer Hikes

There have been many requests to set up a schedule of summer hikes again this year, so here it is. We will do short hikes on Thursday evenings and longer hikes on Sunday afternoons. Note that there is a meeting place and time for each hike so we can car pool, but also a slightly later time where you can show up at the trailhead. We will head up the trail at 6:00 p.m. on Thurs-days and at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays. If you have any questions please call Dave and Mike Richerson or Marilyn Marshall.

Remember to bring water, sunscreen, hat, hiking shoes and walking stick (optional). You may want to bring snacks for extra energy. Bug repellent recommended. Light jacket if the evenings get chilly. Wildflower and bird guides are helpful. We take the hikes slowly and will turn around anytime as time, energy, weather and light allows. Note the carpool times vary slightly to accom-modate the drive to the trailhead.

Thursday June 3 – Porter Fork This is an easy hike along a paved road beside a creek and in the shade. Meet at the MOPC parking lot to carpool prepared to leave at 5:30 . Porter Fork is up Millcreek Canyon on the right past Log Haven. Parking is limited at the trailhead, but more park-ing is available 100 yards further up the canyon. Sunday June 6 – Broads Fork This is a moderate/steep hike approx. 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 2000 feet ( most of us will not go that far). It will take approx. 3 hours. The trail-head is about 4 1/2 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Park in the small lot located on the right side of the road at the beginning of the “S-Turn”. The Broads Fork trail starts at the bottom of the parking lot. To carpool, meet at the parking lot at the mouth of the Canyon at 1:00 p.m. Thursday June 10 -- Neff’s Canyon- This is a relatively easy/moderate hike, approx. 2 miles, less than 2 hours hiking time. We will hike the trail to the right of the parking lot through the trees. Carpools will leave MOPC at 5:45 p.m. The Neff’s Canyon trail starts at the top of Olym-pus Cove at the end of White Way. Sunday June 13 -- Elbow Fork to Lambs Canyon Pass-This moderate hike is about 2.6 miles, 2-3 hours with an elevation gain of 1500 feet. The trailhead is located at Elbow Fork, 6.1 miles up Mill Creek Canyon. Carpools will leave MOPC at 5:40 p.m. Thursday June 17- Desolation Trail to Overlook- The trail begins up Mill Creek Canyon at the parking area on the right just above the Mill Creek Inn. It is about 2-2.5 miles up this easy-moderate trail to the Overlook of Salt Lake Valley. Carpools will leave MOPC at 5:40 p.m. Sunday June 20 Lake Blanche- This is a strenuous 6.5 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of about 2600 feet. Plan about 5-6 hours. The trailhead is about 4 1/2 miles up Big Cotton-wood Canyon. Parking located at the beginning of the “S-Turn”. To carpool, meet at the parking lot at the mouth of the Canyon at 1:00 p.m. Thursday June 24 –Church Fork to Grandeur Peak Meet at MOPC to carpool at 5:30. Church Fork is a paved road up Millcreek Canyon to the left just before reaching the Millcreek Inn. Drive to the end of the paved road passing several small waterfalls. Sunday June 27 - Twin Lakes-Solitude Loop- This moderate hike is about 3 ¾ miles with an elevation gain of 1260 feet. Plan for about 2 ½ hours. Audrey Gann has served MOPC as a Stephen Leader for the past 15 years. In June 1995, she and Kathy Terrion attended Stephen Leadership training in San Diego and began training Stephen Ministers that fall. In the following years, over 35 ministers were trained and hundreds of people have been ministered to by those Stephen Minis-ters, both within our church and throughout the community.

Stephen Ministry is an international lay care-giving ministry begun by the Rev. Kenneth Haugh over 35 years ago. Recently the 60,000th Stephen Leader completed training and over 500,000 Stephen Ministers have been at work worldwide. Audrey represents the best of Stephen Leadership, having coordinated the leaders in ministry here and caring for a care re-ceiver at the same time. She also blessed the ministry team in countless ways through her counsel, prayers, treats, and fabulous meals and parties which built a strong team of leaders and ministers who have operated quietly but effec-tively for fifteen years.

Audrey is now retiring from Stephen Ministry leadership having completed her call from God in this area. She was honored at a retirement cele-bration on May 19 with the ministry team and received a personal letter of congratulations from Rev. Haugh for her outstanding service. Please offer your congratulations and appreciation to Audrey for all she has done to serve Christ and love the people of this church through Stephen Ministry. Thanks so much, Audrey, for the Christ-like example you have lived among us.

Thank You Audrey Gann

Support for our Burmese friends

Clothing – the children now need warm weather clothing, plus there is a baby boy due to be born in May. Boys – ANY SIZE, and men’s small/slim Girls – sizes 12 months, 2-3T, 6-8 Yarn – several of the women knit very well. They can knit sweaters, vests, hats, etc for their family members and friends. They need at least 5 skeins of yarn all in one color to make a larger piece of clothing. Diapers – disposable diapers cut a lot into a family’s budget and washing cloth diapers in co-op washers/dryers is almost as expensive. Currently they could use sizes NB,1,3,4,5 Toilet paper, soap, shampoo, etc – these are not covered by food stamps but still cost money that they often need to spend on other essentials. WASHER and DRYER So that our friends don’t become burdened with items they can’t use, please only donate the items listed. If you have furniture or other large times you think they could use, contact Gwen Mitchell.

Need Housecleaning or yard work? Some people from the Burmese congregation who speak English are interested in house-cleaning, yard work, or odd jobs. $8-12/hour. Transportation may be needed. Please call Gwen Mitchell if interested.
