God Answers

We all want to have our prayers answered. We think it would make life easier. But sometimes God answers them in a way that makes life more challenging.

Young Moses was minding his own business, tending the flock of his father-in-law, when God decided it was time to answer some prayers. For years the chosen people had been held in Egypt in conditions of slavery. They longed to return to their own land, the land that God had given them. They prayed for release.

God answered their prayers by appearing to Moses in a bush that was flaming but not consumed. God asked Moses to lead the people out of slavery into freedom.

This was probably not the answer Moses had in mind. Moses would have been content to let someone else lead the people to freedom. He wanted an end to slavery as much as anyone else. But he never envisioned that he would lead the exodus. God was answering his prayers, but in a way that caused anxiety for Moses.

When we want something done, God hears from us. When God wants something done, we hear from God. It may come as a surprise, but God may have us in mind to answer someone else’s prayer.

THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT — MARCH 24, 2019

Like Mary and Joseph, families have

a mission to welcome Jesus into

their homes and lives, to “listen to

him, speak with him, take care of

him, protect him and grow with

him, and in this way improve the

world.” -Pope Francis

Sunday Faith Formation serves all parish

children. Weekly sessions for Pre-K through

8th Grade meet on Sundays from 10:15am to

11:20am. Two years of faith formation are

usually required prior to reception of the

Sacraments of First Reconciliation,

Eucharist and Confirmation. We always

welcome new team members as

catechists, substitutes, hall monitors and

teen assistants.

Are You Thirsting For God?

Are you someone who would like to learn more about your Catholic Faith? Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?

Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet received Confirmation & Communion?

Others may be thirsting too…

For each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of conversion along the way…we move from unbelief to initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and community ---five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a setting where the journey of faith and moments of conversion can be celebrated within the local Church community.

RCIA is a place to ask questions and seek understanding. Come and See! Invite a friend! All are Welcome! RCIA meets Sunday’s at Little Flower School from 10:15 A.M. to 11:15 A.M.

Contact Ashley Davis at (240) 309-5513

Please join us as we continue our Stories of the Old Testament by James P. Campbell. This study takes us through the Old Testament using 100 carefully selected readings. Each reading is meant to be completed in one sitting using dozens of short easy-to-grasp informational pieces to supply background and commentary to understand the Old Testament. For more information please call or text Susan Baker at 301-904-7404.

Brothers – Saving Private Ryan – The Real Story!

Paratroopers poured from the sky before dawn on June 6, 1944. Among those jumping into the dark were two members of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division: Father Francis L. Sampson, 32, the unit’s regimental chaplain and a member of the Knights of Columbus; and Sgt. Frederick “Fritz” Niland, 24, the youngest of four brothers serving in World War II. The story of Sampson and Niland, brother paratroopers and eventually brother Knights, would later inspire Steven Spielberg’s epic film Saving Private Ryan. Niland had been forced to jump early after his plane was hit by enemy fire. He landed miles away from his target and was behind enemy lines for nine days. He eventually rejoined his unit at Utah beach. It was near Utah beach that Niland sought out the chaplain, distraught at learning that his brother Robert, a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, had been killed June 6 and was buried about 20 miles away. Only a few weeks earlier, Fritz’s oldest brother, Edward, had been shot down in Burma — missing in action and presumed dead. The chaplain offered to help Fritz find Robert’s grave and drove him from cemetery to cemetery, searching. When Sampson came upon the grave of Preston Niland, he showed it to Fritz, thinking that it had been recorded in error. “Father Sampson,” the young man replied, “Preston was my brother, too.” Unknown to Fritz, 2nd Lt. Preston Niland had been killed just a day after Robert, fighting on Utah beach. A check of a nearby cemetery revealed Robert’s grave. So, believing Fritz to be his family’s only surviving son, the chaplain notified the War Department and initiated the paperwork to have him brought home. Niland’s parents, Michael and Augusta, must have been grateful to Father Sampson, but Fritz was not. Informed by Sampson that he was being sent back to the United States, Niland refused, saying, “I’m staying here with my boys.” Sampson replied, “You can take that up with General Eisenhower or the president, but you’re going home.” Niland returned to New York, where he served out the rest of the war as a military policeman.

The Mass airs every Sunday at 10:30am on WDCW-50:

• No cable; Dish or DIRECTV subscribers: Ch. 50

ALERT

Email and Texting Scams

The Central Pastoral Administrative Office has noted an increase in the “phishing” email and texting scams that have been sent to parishioners over the past year or so.

In these fraudulent schemes, your name seems to appear on an email address asking a parishioner to purchase i-Tunes or gift cards on your behalf. Sometimes these scams even ask that funds be sent because of some emergency.

This is a fraudulent “phishing” scam that has targeted a number of dioceses around the country. Most recently it appears that these fraudulent efforts have now expanded to text messages on mobile devices. This mobile phone scam is even more dangerous, because those perpetrating this fraud can receive gift card codes via texted picture or message.

Unfortunately there is currently very little that can be done to prevent or stop this type of fraud. If you learn of someone who actually sends money or gift cards in response to these scams, you may tell them to contact law enforcement. (No pastor would ever make these types of requests.)
