DESCRIPTION

The role Portsmouth, New Hampshire played in the Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in the nation’s history, was remarkable by any standard. A town of fewer than 10,000 inhabitants during the war, Portsmouth sent almost half of its eligible male residents to serve in the Union army, navy and marines. Many would never return to their homes near the Piscatauqa River. Generals Fitz John Porter and Amiel W. Whipple hailed from Portsmouth, but it was not just those of fame (or notoriety in the case of Porter) that made their mark. The essays in this catalog also highlight the efforts, often heroic, made by ordinary citizens on the battlefield and on the home front. This catalog originally accompanied an exhibit at the Portsmouth Athenaeum from July 11-November 18, 2000. It was deemed timely to republish this significant contribution.
