WHY HAS “GOING GREEN” BECOME A BIG DEAL?

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientists believe that it is very likely (greater than 90 percent chance) that most of the warming we have experienced since the 1950s is due to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.

WHY IS GOING GREEN A BIG DEAL? Greenhouse Effect

a natural occurrence that helps regulate the temperature of our planet

Like a greenhouse Global Warming

an average increase in temperatures near the Earth’s surface and in the lowest layer of the atmosphere.

GLOBAL WARMING Average global temps could get rise

1 to 6.5º C in this century

What could happen if it increased to each of these degrees?

Write down at least 2 notes from this clip

Lets see @ 6 degrees

National Geographic Channel February 24th at 7 p.m. The documentary, featuring British author Mark Lynas and other notable climate experts, explores what effect each rise of 1ºC could have on the world and what must be done to reduce the threat.

Some predictions include: At 2ºC higher: Greenland's glaciers and some of

the lower lying islands begin to disappear. At 3ºC higher: Ice would no longer be found in the

Arctic during the summer months, the Amazon rainforest would suffer a devastating drought, and extreme weather patterns would become frequent.

At 4ºC higher: Oceans rise dramatically causing extreme flooding.

At 5ºC higher: What scientists call the "twilight zone" of climate change, temperate regions could become uninhabitable, leading humans to battle each other for the world's dwindling resources.

At 6ºC higher: Scientists call this the "doomsday scenario" because oceans become marine wastelands, deserts expand and catastrophic events become commonplace.

HUMAN IMPACT (NOTES) Fossil fuels

A hydrocarbon deposit, such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas, derived from living matter of a previous geologic time and used for fuel.

RECYCLABLE QUALITIES Not much need for energy to recycle it Material has a value

Non-Qualities $ to collect it is high $ to process it is high New material cost to make it It would have dangerous wastes

ANALYZING THE GRAPHS Which population is not negatively

effected by the loss of water?

What will happen to the squirrels if this continues?

When did the rabbits become extinct? Why?

Mice

They will eventually become extinct

In 2004, the pollution level was to high and quality was to low for the rabbit population

What would happen if pollution stopped?

If the pollution leveled off, what would happen to the population and environment?a. it would go into extinctionb. a health populationc. no long-term change in the environment.

The squirrel population would increase and the mice populations may decrease

ANSWER QUESTIONS IN NOTES What did you learn about how

humans can impact the earth? Was there something you didn’t

know about renewable or biodegradable products? If so what was it?

When you hear about the “chemistry of life,” what do you think about it?
