In Memory of Thatcher MarkhamOn the morning of June 17, the downstairs
wall on our house collapsed from a mudslidefrom the terrible Fathers Day Flood. Thatcherwas buried in the collapse. We were able to dighim out, but not quick enough, and emergencyvehicles couldn't get to us, as all the roads werewashed out. With the help of our great FirstResponders, we transported him to the Hancockside in a boat, where an ambulance could finallyget him to the hospital. They were able tofinally get a pulse, and after waiting for theCounty Airport to clear the runway, he was airlifted to U of M hospital. He never regainedconsciousness, and late in the day of June 18, we lost our beloved son.
Thatcher was born on Nov. 12, 2005. Our first born. From the beginning, he lovedhockey. He would love to pick up any stick laying around the house and ask anyone aroundto play with him. He would go to watch any hockey game, and actually sit and watch thewhole game, never wanting to go run around the stands as most kids do.
He started out in developing mites and mites as a defenseman, and part time goalie.Like his father, he was never a gifted skater or had a great shot. But unlike his father, hewas a smart hockey player. He always knew where to go on the ice or who to pass the puckto. As the years went on, he just wanted to be a goalie, to be just like his older cousinsand win a high school state championship and make it on to the Michigan Tech Hockeyteam. He would watch hockey videos on Youtube for hours and hours, until we would makehim shut the computer off and go to bed.
He had a blast being a goalie. Win or lose, he liked the games where he would get 35-45 shots on him. He loved saving the puck. He would try to get anyone from an adult tohis 4 year old sister to shoot on him at home playing mini sticks, usually grabbing thesmallest net he could or the biggest pads to make his job easier. He also loved just beingin the locker room and hanging out with his teammates.
As a Squirt, his team was able to go downstate and win the State Championship withonly 8 skaters and Thatcher as the goalie. He was beaming with pride to show off hisChampionship medal to anyone that came over to our house for many weeks afterward.
He also had one year under his belt as a referee, anything to get on the ice. He wouldconstantly ask one of us to take him to the Oscar Dome, or to let him play in a rental at theDee after his regular practice. He would shovel the snow off the ice on the canal when theconditions would let him, and skate for hours with his brother and cousins.
This weekend is a tough one for us. Just last year, Thatcher came to watch his dad playin this very tournament. With his mischievous grin, he would make fun of his dad formissing a shot, falling down, or just being too slow.
We would like to thank everyone for their support during this extremely difficult time inour lives. Thank you to the Copper Country Oldtimers for honoring our son, it means agreat deal to us!
