Dear neighbors,Over the past 12 months my family and I

dealt with the challenges presented by my cancer diagnosis. I have been blessed and honored to be in the midst of really good people—people who understand that to give is to receive—in abundance! Because of them, my perspective on giving and receiv-ing expanded throughout this journey.

The decision to let people know what was going on was pretty easy, after all, it’s Sheboygan and everybody knows every-thing anyway. I might as well give them the correct information. I am glad I did. Telling opened me and my family to oh-so-many prayers and well-wishes. The extreme kind-ness of my coworkers (especially Allison Thompson) and the MOW board of directors surely helped. It was a very humbling experi-ence, but I am delighted and grateful to re-port that those prayers were answered, and I am again enjoying abundant good health!

Three things I heard recently really reso-nated with me.

• A speaker at a breakfast meeting said, “We are only on this earth a short time - DO SOMETHING to help people!” • Another speaker said, “There is ALWAYS something to give along the way.” • The host at another meeting had this posted on his desk, “Give back for the dream life you are living.” This whole giving-is-receiving and receiv-

ing-is-giving idea is one that we witness ev-ery day at FRESH Meals On Wheels. Clients are amazed at the quality and compassion of our volunteers and service, and volun-teers report that they get a great deal of satisfaction out of helping others. By help-ing, we learn about others, and the meaning of “love your neighbor as yourself.”

One of the things we’ve learned about our

clients is that they don’t all have a ton of op-portunities for fun—sometimes because of a lack of resources, either social or financial, and other times because they are severely homebound due to health complications. This makes us especially grateful to the community members who step up and bring joy to those who are homebound.

Each year, over a thousand people visit folks in the area, bringing greetings, meals and sometimes special little gifts. Others share their riches and talents, providing financial gifts or things like homegrown produce.

In May, a number of clients (chosen via random lottery) attended the first ever Ladies Day Out at FRESH Meals On Wheels. The wonderful folks at the Kohler Waters Spa treated the ladies to a morning of man-icures and TLC. They also received goody bags with lotion from Kohler Waters Spa and a potted gerbera daisy from Caan’s.

In June, the great sailors at SEAS treated several clients to a special outing on Lake Michigan. They sailed along the water and even took turns driving the boat! Thank you Leslie and Juju for a wonderful day!

What a remarkable community we get to call home! So many helping others, whether it’s arranging an event for Meals On Wheels clients, or offering a smile or a hug to some-one having a bad day. We all have some-thing to give, and so many of our neighbors are doing just that. Thank you all for your kindness!

According to the CDC, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. and is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, stroke and lower limb amputations. More than 30 million Americans have diabetes and another 84 million have prediabetes, a condition that often leads to type 2 diabetes if not treated.

Fresh Meals On Wheels and Concordia University have been working together on a number of initiatives to improve the lives of our clients and other seniors in Sheboygan County.

As part of that collaboration, Concordia School of Health students Samuel Steinberger, Jacob Harriman, Breanna Thomson, and Emily Gomez recently presented a diabetes education program at Meals On Wheels. They talked

about who is at risk, what to look out for, how to prevent type 2 diabetes and gave information on managing the disease if you have diabetes or prediabetes.Risk Factors The four main risk factors for type 2 diabetes are:

• being overweight• being physically inactive• being age 45 or older• having a family history of diabetes

Symptoms Symptoms of type 2 diabetes

develop slowly and often go unnoticed. See your doctor if you experience:

• increased urination• increased thirst• increased hunger• frequent infections• slow wound healing• extreme fatigue

• blurry vision• numb or tingling hands or feet• very dry skin

Benefits of ExerciseInsulin is typically required for

cells to take in glucose (the energy needed for the cells to function properly) but, working muscles can do that without insulin. Exercise provides energy to muscles, helps lower blood sugar, and increases cell responsiveness to insulin, which can help prevent as well as manage diabetes.

Physical activity doesn’t have to mean runing marathons. It can be a 30 minute walk at lunch, yard work in the evening, going for a bike ride, or walking the dog. The most important thing is to get moving. Find an enjoyable activity or two and do one every day. What to Eat

Managing blood sugar through diet might mean avoiding foods with a high glycemic index including white rice, white bread, bagels, pretzels, and pineapple and replacing them with whole grains and healthy fats. For more information on diet, check out the American Diabetes Association webpage at www.Diabetes.org.See a doctor - 90% of people who have prediabetes don’t know it!

If you or someone you know is at risk or has symptoms of diabetes, please call a doctor today. Not everyone with type 2 diabetes needs to take insulin. There are a variety of medications available to manage the disease. Your doctor will help you find the best option to manage diabetes or prediabetes.Meals On Wheels is here to help

Meals On Wheels offers a low carb diet to help people with diabetes eat right. For more information, or to get meals call us at 920-451-7011.

Inspired by the iconic sights and sounds of one of America’s most time-honored spectacles, the Christopher Circus Collection offers a detailed look into the world of the American Circus. The Christopher Circus Collection showcases those who worked with, performed in, and visited the circus from the late 1800s to the closing of The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 2017. The col-lection features items from a variety of circuses including the Seils-Sterling Circus, which gave its first performance in Sheboygan in 1918 as the Lindemann Brothers Circus.

Guests at Meals On Wheels’ June-A-Palooza fund-raiser, The Greatest Show on Turf will be the first to to view this extensive, private collection, of brightly-col-ored posters, whimsical clown shoes, vintage circus

tickets, circus cos-tumes, fun photographs and more. Throughout the afternoon, as they explore the grounds of the beautiful Christopher Farm & Gardens, guests will be treat-ed to an aerial ballet, stilt walkers, a juggling unicyclist, a fire hoop entertainer, mechanical animal rides, carnival games, musical entertainment, and more. Chic circus food and luscious libations will be served throughout the gardens as well. In the evening every-one will gather under the big top for dinner, more

circus entertainment and silent and live auctions. The night will end with music and dancing.

The Greatest Show On Turf takes place 2:30-10 pm Saturday, June 29 at Christopher Farm and Gardens on Garton Road in Sheboygan. All-inclusive tickets cost $150 in advance or $190 at the door. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit Juneapalooza.com, or call Meals On Wheels at 920-451-7011.

Evelyn tripped on the bath-room rug and found herself on the floor wedged between the sink and the tub. She tried to get up, but couldn’t. She was stuck. Frightened and alone, she didn’t know what to do.

Eventually, she heard a knock at the front door, but they couldn’t hear her yelling. Then the phone rang, but she was trapped. Finally, she heard a key in the lock and her daughter call out, “Mom? Meals On Wheels called and said you didn’t answer the door, where are you?” Evelyn cried with relief as she replied, “In here, on the floor!”

Many times when seniors fall, they can’t get up on their own. If they’re lucky, someone checks on them regularly, but many people don’t have that safety net and can be stuck on the floor for hours, or even days.

Meals On Wheels is more than a meal. It’s human contact, wellness checks and the assurance that at the end of the day, every person is accounted for. Meals On Wheels is peace of mind.

We serve people who have disabilities or are elderly or homebound throughout Sheboygan County regardless of income. If you know someone who could benefit from daily home-deliverd meals and safety checks, call Fresh Meals On Wheels at 920-451-7011.

Falls are no laughing matter.

It is warm and sunny now, but with the extreme cold and snow we had this winter, it was often hard to find enough people who could safely deliver meals. The Monday after a weekend of heavy snow was so bad, meals had to be cancelled. The winds continued to howl the next few days adding an extra bite to the subzero temperatures, but our clients needed food, and we needed to make sure they were safe and warm.

Nick Vugrinovich and Harry Cook from KP Welding, volunteered to brave the weather. Many clients were surprised and thankful to get meals in such cold weather. One man answered his door wearing a parka. When Nic asked about it, he said his heat wasn’t working, but he hadn’t notified anyone.

“I called Meals On Wheels and they contacted WPS and the family and got his heat working,” Nic said. The next client had no running water. That too was taken care of.

They truly did deliver more than a meal that day. The men’s jobs prevent them from volunteering on a regular basis. “When I’m retired, I’ll deliver meals,” Harry said.

Way to go, guys - thank you!

Nic Vugrinovich and Harry Cook delivered more than a meal this winter.

The Scoop

Dear Meals On Wheels, Our Family can’t thank you enough for the

wonderful meals and visits that you provided for our dad, Jake Hermann, during his last few years living in his Geele Avenue home. He had a wonderful life, and we were so lucky to have him for as long as we did. He passed away last January at the age of 91.

We wanted you to know how our dad’s face would light up when he spoke of the kindness of the volunteers. He always loved kids, so when volunteers were able to bring their children along, he couldn’t wait to give each of them a Hershey bar.

For our family, it was comforting to know that someone would be “checking on” him in the middle of the day, and we knew it would brighten his day even if for just a few minutes.

~Tim Hermann, Laurie Wehner & Julie Lutze

Jake Hermann loved giving Hershey Bars to volunteers’ kids. His family appreciated the daily visits and safety checks.
