MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS COMES TO KILKENNY AS PART OF ITS WORLD TOUR 2009

A museum dedicated to broken hearts has been founded in Croatia. Authors of the concept Olinka Vištica and Drazen Grubišić decided to set up the museum after consoling friends over their failed romances. This museum has everything from romantic and touching letters to different gifts given to lovers like teddy bears and photos, but also such unusual examples as a leg prosthesis donated by a war veteran who fell in love with his physiotherapist and a gall stone. Every single object on display is anonymous, and has a description / story related to the relationship that was behind it. After the success of the first display in Zagreb this unique museum is touring the world. www.brokenships.com

This is your chance to be a part of this museum dedicated to broken hearts and lost loves! All of us have experienced the end of a loving relationship, whether with a lover, friend, or family member. Most of us have hidden away the objects that remind us of these painful heartbreaks. Have you ever wished there was a meaningful way of letting go of these 'things?' this museum is a fantastic way of preserving beautiful, enriching even painful, moments from your past? The Museum is an artistic project in which everyone can participate. It is serving to honour our emotional heritage, offering us the opportunity to preserve those memories collectively. By contributing your own mementos you will become part of the exhibition when it comes to Kilkenny. Arts Officer, Mary Butler says that she is very excited to be bringing this unique show to Kilkenny. She is eager for people to respond to this unique opportunity and to donate items. This in turn will further enrich the show and it also offers people the opportunity to anonymously tell their stories of lost love and heartbreak to the Irish audience and beyond as the exhibition continues to tour the world.

*******Testimonials from 2008 mentees:

‘It was most enlivening to have two eminent professionals look at and discuss my work, and inspiring that they were interested in my idea and encouraged me to pursue it, with very practical suggestions for future development.’ Helen Blake, Wicklow Artist

'It is not easy to remain confident in one's practice, given the many 'knock-backs' one receives as an artist. It is therefore really important to have occasion to get constructive feedback from colleagues, and to have someone in whom one has confidence, to point out those things of value in one's work. These were objective viewpoints given by established practitioners and art educators, and I felt encouraged, and nudged in directions I needed to consider.' Helen Gaynor, Wexford Artist

Devious Theatre Company, In Bits - June 27th, 28th

This weekend sees favourites of the local theatre scene, The Devious Theatre Company, take to the stage in Rothe House as part of the Shakespeare In The House festival to present their own twist on the classic works of William Shakespeare. Indeed, the company promises that "you've never seen Shakespeare performed like this", according to co-founder Ken McGuire.

Actors including Scott Barriscale, Stephen Colfer, John Doran, Ken McGuire, Kevin Mooney, Niamh Moroney and John Morton will perform a number of Shakespearean works including scenes from The Reduced Shakespeare Company's Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Shakespeare's Editor Sketch, a Shakespearean version of the recent rant by Batman Star Christian Bale interspersed by a selection of monologues and sonnets.

Their diversion into Shakespeare comes at a time when the group, who last year brought us the hard-hitting Trainspotting and comedic Smitten, are gearing up for a production of Willy Russell's Stags And Hens, running at the Watergate Theatre next month.

"We wouldn't be a devious group of actors if we weren't working on a few projects at once", says Ken. "All the cast involved in our appearance at the festival have been involved in performing Shakespearean works at some point over the last few years from Macbeth to Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream and more, versions of which you can also see over the course of the two days. We're also in the middle of rehearsals for our next major production but at some point in your theatre career you've got to try your hand at Shakespeare. For us, it just happens to be this coming weekend."

The festival, now in its second year, runs in Rothe House on Parliament Street this Saturday and Sunday from noon each day and also features performances by the junior and senior groups of Dreamstuff Youth Theatre based out of Young Irish Film Makers here in Kilkenny. The setting of Rothe House in itself is ideal for the festival as the building of the house mirrors the timeline of Shakespeare's own career in theatre.

Further information is available by contacting The Devious Theatre Company, Dreamstuff Youth Theatre and the office at Rothe House on 056 - 7722893.______________________________________________________________________

Butler Gallery: Remote Control by David Beattie

The Butler Gallery is delighted to host Remote Control, an exhibition of works by David Beattie. David Beattie makes sculpture and installations that endeavour to capture the human desire to comprehend natural phenomena. Through his open-ended experimentation and references to significant scientific discoveries in history, Beattie highlights how the language of science has evolved by way of our attempts to understand human existence. The experiential nature of the work, learning by doing, is an important aspect of his art practice. While he researches and investigates the physicality of space, substance and time through the use of elementary physics and lo-fi aesthetics, Beattie manages to retain a sense of excitement and discovery for both himself and the viewer.

Richard Coghlan is one of Kilkenny's most exciting young artists. His current series of work seeks to investigate the living tale of an ancient object- namely the Famine bowl, an enormous vessel recently returned to the grounds of Callan Workhouse. Displaying both a vibrant energy, and a determined engagement with historical memory, Richard's paintings act as visual artefacts, or the contemporary echoes of an ancient object. Acclaimed previously as alchemist and artist, Richard's unusual use of source materials invites the viewer to explore the process of the art as well as the finished pieces.

The exhibition opens at 7pm on Friday 19th June at The Blackbird Gallery, 18 William Street, Kilkenny. All are welcome.______________________________________________________________________

Art in the Open 2009 Wexford: Call

The second Irish plein air painting festival, Art in the Open 2009, takes place in and around Wexford Town from Friday 31st July until Suinday 2nd August with a juried exhibition opening on Monday 3rd and closing the following evening.

It is a visual arts festival more about creating than exhibiting and especially unusual to have an event which interacts directly with the public as artists from far and wide set up their easels and squeeze out their paints in full view on the streets of Wexford.

There will be a number of Guest Artists, ensuring a variety of approach to plein air painting in a range of media, as well as setting a high standard of work. They are joined by many more, professional and amateur, who come to participate, to watch and to exchange. Last year, over one hundred artists took part. In 2009, Art in the Open will feature artists from the United States, France, UK, Netherlands and throughout Ireland.

A number of art workshops are scheduled this year and festive street entertainment will be provided by Wexford Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon.

An entry form is now available at http://www.artintheopen.org/RegistrationForm.pdf Art in the Open,c/o Pigyard Gallery 13, Selskar StreetWexfordT: 353(53)9122019 www.artintheopen.org______________________________________________________________________
