TORNADO ROLLS INTO SHILDON The first mainline steam Locomotive to be built in Britain arrived in Shildon at the weekend, and was welcomed by masses of railway enthusiasts. The LNER Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific Tornado rolled into the town by its own steam and will be resident at the Locomotion museum until Friday, May 7th. The train, which was built in Darlington, took 20 years to build and cost approximately £2.5 million. A knowledgeable team of volunteers from The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust are on hand to tell Tornado’s story – from the discovery of the surviving drawing of the Peppercorn Class A1s right up to the present day. What’s more, for a small additional charge, visitors will have the chance to access Tornado’s footplate, where they can see the controls and gain an insight into the experiences of an engine driver. This Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday, May 1st, Sunday, May 2nd, and Monday, May 3rd, Tornado will be starring in a ‘North Eastern Giants of Steam’ gala event at the museum. "This is your chance to see the locomotive in light steam and, for a small additional charge, access the locomotive’s cab," said a spokesperson for the museum. At the event, people will also be able to see another Peppercorn-designed locomotive in light steam – as the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group’s K1 class locomotive 62005 Lord of the Isles will be on display. In addition, for a small charge, visitors will be able to enjoy a steam train ride, with Furness Railway No. 20 and NELPG’s J72 class locomotive 69023 Joem both hauling the museum’s passenger service during the event. On Sunday May 2nd and Monday May 3rd, there will also be an Antiques, Gifts and Crafts Fair in the Collection Building, with more than 20 stalls offering a range of unusual or unique items. Furthermore, there will be an opportunity for railway and photography enthusiasts to see locos in light steam on the museum’s sidings between 5.30pm to 7.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday. Admission is by pre-booked ticket only, costing £5 per person. For further information about North East Giants of Steam at Locomotion, or for tickets to the photography event, contact the museum on 01388 777999, email [email protected]. uk or visit our website on www.nrm.org.uk/locomotion. The museum is open daily, from 10.00am to 5.00pm with free entry. As part of a learning partnership, Sunnydale Community College has recently been successful in securing funding to allow it to run courses in Reflexology, Counselling and Dressmaking. All of the courses are free and run for ten weeks. A Shildon girl is ecstatic after reaching the final 17 contestents of Miss Durham 2010.Zara Sowerby, who has lived in the town all of her life, was also a finalist in last year's contest. Speaking of her experience, she said, "Afer getting through to the final of the 2009 contest and being unsuccessful, my determination kicked in and I entered again in hope of taking home the crown."It would be amazing to represent the beautiful Durham City at this year's Miss England finals."Working for Durham County Council as an Administration Officer and working part-time at Shildon's Sunnydale Leisure Centre, Zara has had plenty of opportunity to promote the city. She is also studying towards a BA (Hons) Leadership and Management Degree at Northumbria University. The contest, which is to take place at Sedgefield Racecourse on Saturday, May 8th, consists of three rounds, including Ladies Day at the Races, Fancy Dress & Beach Wear, as

Military style fitness classes are to take place at Shildon Sunnydale Leisure Centre. The classes are run by former and serving members of the armed forces, but are specifically designed for members of the public who are returning to exercise and want to lose weight, as well as for the already very fit.

The classes combine indoor and outdoor circuits, running, plyometrics, tabbing and team building activities."It is a class that challenges the mind as well as the body," said a spokesperson. The Milbootcamp classes will take place at the Leisure Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.00pm.

A community group sprucing up a neighbouring town’s railway station is being held up as an example of how the local community could improve their own railway stations. The Bishop Auckland Station Trust, with the support of Network Rail, has recently begun work to improve the town’s railway station after

months of fundraising and planning.A representative of the Heritage Line Community Rail Partnership, the line which runs from Darlington to Bishop Auckland, stated that the efforts of the group provided a great example of how communities could improve their facilities.

Charlie Walton, the Partnership’s chairman said, “The partnership hopes that this will encourage other, similar groups along the line at Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, Heighington and Darlington North Road to do similar work in collaboration with the Community Rail Officer, Bob Whitehouse.”

SHILDON uRGED TO SPRuCE uP ITS STATION

COPPER THEFTTony Lees Bland, of Auckland Wynd, Shildon, was released on unconditional bail to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on May 12th. The 43 year-old faces a charge of stealing a copper cylinder and piping belonging to Durham

Police Authority, but it is hoped that the charge may be deemed suitable for a caution and the Crown will now make enquiries with the police. Bland states that he was simply there when the items of scrap were being taken.

Dear Voter,

From Middleton-in-Teesdale in the west to Tudhoe in the east my team and I have listened to your concerns through canvassing, public meetings and visiting shops and businesses.

I would like to personally thank all those residents that may not have been Conservative voters, yet that may not have been Conservative voters, yet were kind enough to share their views on the biglocal problems.

I have brought senior Conservatives to the areato see the issues for themselves. Theresa May (Work & Pensions) has visited the area; Dominic Grieve (Shadow Justice Secretary) met with a cross section of people to talk about policing andcross section of people to talk about policing andcrime; Geoffrey Clinton Brown (Shadow BusinessTeam) met with a group of local business people,as did David Davis (former Home Secretary).

They were all struck by how this constituency has been taken for granted by Labour over the years. Their record of failure hits you in the face- we havetoo many empty shops and countless number of too many empty shops and countless number of empty factories that once employed thousands of local people.

Other visits include Mark Hoban, a Durham man, part of the Shadow Treasury team, who has specific knowledge of this area and spoke withlocal shop owners and Jim Paice, part of the Shadow RuralShadow Rural Affairs Team, met with local sheep and dairy farmers.

Meeting so many residents has affirmed why I want to represent this area. I want to make a difference because this is my home too. I grew upin West Auckland, lived in Bishop Auckland andmy family and friends live throughout the constituencconstituency.

The Bishop Auckland constituency has been taken for granted by Labour for too long and Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Spennymoor areclear examples of Labour’s negligence of decent honest people. If you elect me as you MP I pledge to make difference for to the area which is my home.home.

Only together can we achieve the change needed. Make a real difference on May 6th

This advert was paid for by donations to the Local Liberals People Before Politics Party on behalf of Sam Zair. Promoted and published by John Bailey, Agent on behalf of Sam Zair both of 10 Fore Bondgate, Bishop Auckland, DL14 .7PF

An interview with SAM zAIR, the Local Liberals People Before Politics Candidate for the Bishop Auckland Constituency.

So Sam, what prompted you to stand as a Local Liberals candidate in this General Election?SAM – As a Town, District and County Councilor I have always felt that the best way we can improve our community is by becoming involved. I feel very strongly, as a local businessman, living and working in Bishop Auckland we need to stand up and fight for what we believe is the best way forward for our constituency. Our town centres should be the heartbeat of our communities. Do we really need both Sainsbury’s and Tesco on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland? Yes, more jobs will be created, but can our road links handle the increased traffic and will we lose more shops and jobs in our town centres? Our road links need to be improved something Labour forgot about. We need investment in modern industrial units to get manufacturing back into our region. 220 EBAC jobs lost to Newton Aycliffe? Our unemployed are crying out for work. My Party used a local printing company to print my election leaflets. Both Labour and Lib Dems had their leaflets printed in Cardiff and Derby. Does this help our local economy?

question - You hold strong views about Bishop Auckland General HospitalSAM - Yes, we tried unsuccessfully to stop the downgrading of this state of the art NHS hospital long before Helen Goodman became an MP. Tony Blair claimed this as an NHS flagship for the future. Successive Labour Councils have done nothing to stop the savage cuts in services. Our hospital has a larger geographical catchment area than Darlington or Durham, yet the NHS Trust feel we are surplus to requirements. This is a 25 year cost to the taxpayers of our region. Bureaucracy gone mad. Labour voted almost unanimously to downgrade the hospital. They should hang their heads in shame. I will push the NHS to review their decisions on our hospital and high administration costs. We now have more administrators than hospital beds. The Labour Party made adverse comments on County Councillors' allowances to which they are entitled. This is gutter politics. Check online Helen Goodman’s expenses. My allowance as a Bishop Auckland Town Councilor all goes to Butterwick Hospice.

question – Why did you not stand as the Lib Dem Candidate for Bishop Auckland?SAM - Mark Wilkes a Lib Dem Durham City Councilor was nominated as the Parliamentary Party Candidate. I asked for the nomination to be deferred to allow me time to submit my nomination but was unsuccessful. As a Durham City County Councillor living in a Durham Ward I believe he could have divided loyalties between Bishop Auckland and Durham. If it came to the vote for downgrading or closure, which hospital would he choose? I believe that I am the person best suited to win this seat from Labour and to achieve this I had to leave the party.

question - So why should we vote for you Sam?SAM – Voting for me may be a difficult decision to take but I will not promise anything that I can not achieve

I WILL -• promise to remain honest and transparent and do my best for our constituency• leave the broken promises and the gutter politics to the three main parties• fight for unjust causes, including the closure of our nursing homes and local post offices• fight for better road and transport links to attract new manufacturing and reduce our unemployment levels• fight against further downgrading of our Hospital and do all I can to get some of the services returned• vote for a reduction in paperwork so the Police can be out on our streets rather than behind a desk.

I cannot move mountains, but I can chip away at the corners, build a few bridges and maybe, just maybe, my perseverance will begin to pay dividends for our community and changes for the better will begin to come through. My door is always open to anyone.

I have received some excellent responses around the constituency. Many voters are wishing me well and are offering their support and votes and I thank them for that.

JOBSLabour is committed to creating and protecting jobs. For example it has created 500 jobs in County Durham

through the Future Jobs Fund. It will continue to put money into

the economy over the next year to secure the recovery.

If the Tories get in they will start making cuts straight away—

meaning job losses in the public and private sectors. The Lib Dems have

also said they favour “savage cuts” - the Tories’ natural allies.

CRIMECrime is down 25% locally and Durham police has 30% more

funding. Labour has committed to maintain front line policing. When

challenged by Gordon Brown during the leaders’ debate, David Cameron

refused to match that pledge.

IMMIGRATIONNick Clegg and the Lib Dems want an amnesty for illegal immigrants. This has been tried in Spain and now their unemployment is 19%. And Clegg says he wants to channel immigration into regions such as the North EastUnder Labour immigration is falling and will continue to fall because of the points system that controls who

can and who can’t come in. Last year 65,000 illegals were deported.

HOMESLabour is spend-ing £50m in the Bishop Auckland area to ensure all homes are Decent Homes. By contrast the Tories have plans to put up rents and end secure tenancies— tenants in council and housing as-sociation homes will be on two months’ notice.

FAMILIESUnder Labour, families with children get up to £212 a week tax credit and a £750 fund for each child. The Tories will cut these for middle income families—and cut one third of Sure Start.Labour gives free school meals to all primary age children here. The Tories won’t.Under Labour every young person is guaranteed an apprenticeship, college place or training. The Tories refuse to back this.

MPS’ EXPENSESHelen Goodman says: “I completely condemn the way some MPs have abused the system of expenses and over claimed. I believe there should be no compromises on this”.

Helen Goodman was given a clean bill of health by the authorities who investigated all MPs’ expenses. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg was required by the authorities to repay £910 spent on gardening.

PuB WINDOWS DAMAGED

Michael Kenneth Collingwood had been invited to a private party at the King William public house in Shildon on the night of March 6th, to celebrate the landlady’s step daughter’s 40th birthday. There, he had an altercation with the landlady’s son and left the premises only to return later brandishing a cricket bat. He proceeded to goad the people inside and then put out two large windows using the bat.Collingwood, of Roseberry Terrace, Shildon, claimed that he was set upon in the pub, held down and scratched. The Crown however did not accept his account of what had happened.

Collingwood had been drinking all day and fully admitted his actions. He apologised and stated that he wanted no further repercussions. When asked if he had been barred from the pub Collingwood replied that he did not know but expected that this was likely. He had not been back to the pub and had no intention of doing so. Magistrates considered an exclusion order before handing the defendant a twelve months conditional discharge. Collingwood was ordered to pay £85 costs and £575 compensation for the windows.

Over 300 people have travelled from across the county to learn how to cook simple, fresh affordable food as part in the Pass It On County Durham cookery campaign. The campaign gives people the opportunity to beat the bulge and make a lifestyle change that will help people to maintain a healthier lifestyle without the yoyo dieting. Pass It On County Durham helps people to live a healthier lifestyle by giving people the tools and support to cook a simple, affordable,

fresh food and then pass it onto family, friends and/or work colleagues. So far, events have taken place in Consett, West Cornforth, Haswell, Wheatley Hill, Blackhall and Stanhope and now it’s Shildon's opportunity to learn how to cook a sizzling chicken stir fry. Sessions will take place between 10.30am and 12noon on Wednesday, May 5th at Shildon Civic Hall. Cathryn Taylor, event coordinator, commented, “The success of the previous events and courses

demonstrates that the Pass It On County Durham cookery campaign is an excellent way to inspire people to cook more confidently and try new dishes. It is a great way to help people to make new friends, whilst learning new skills and improving their own health.”For more information or to book a place on any of the events taking place, visit www.pcp.uk.net, email [email protected] or contact 01325 321234. Booking is essential as places are limited to 20 people per course.

Shildon AFC played their penultimate game of the season at home to Tow Law Town on Saturday 24th April 2010 and ran out comfortable winners by a margin of 4 goals to 1.The Railwaymen now lie 2nd in the league with only one game left to play, which is away to Penrith on Tuesday 4th May. A Shildon win will guarantee them a 2nd place finish.Shildon were quick out of the blocks, dominating the game almost immediately from kick-off.Shildon looked dangerous and nearly took the lead early on. After 9 minutes Steven Johnson beat his man and found himself through on goal. He should have scored, but he waited too long and lost his chance.Shildon didn’t have to wait too long for their opening goal. Their early pressure paid off on 14 minutes, when they took the lead through Martin Houlahan. Steven Johnson pulled the ball back to Houlahan, who fired home from 18 yards.Lawyers finally got into action after 28 minutes. The Tow Law side forced two corners which produced 3 or 4 good efforts, all blocked or charged down by the home defence. On 36 minutes Tow Law’s No. 8 Daniel Craggs saw his drive just skim the bar.A minute later, Steven Johnson was once again clear. He rounded the keeper, but again

failed to capitalise.Half Time: Shildon 1 - Tow Law Town 0.The game’s second goal came on 52 minutes. Shildon’s second made it 2 - 0 after Barry Poskett's poor goal kick found Steven Johnson, who fired low into the left corner of the net.Ten minutes later Martin Houlahan saw Poskett stranded, but over hit his shot.On 70 minutes Houlahan was once again causing Tow Law trouble. He made it 3 - 0 with a powerful diagonal drive, which gave the Lawyers’ keeper no chance. On 89 minutes a rare Lawyers attack produced a consolation goal. Shildon's defence failed to clear their lines and Mathew Huntley's shot was nearly saved by Keith Finch, but the ball was judged to be over the line.Shildon nearly restored the 3 goal margin on 90 minutes. DOuBLE DEFEAT FOR CRICKETERS

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s senior sides both lost to Langley Park on the opening day of the Readers Durham County League season. At home, a much weakened 1st XI batted first and after a promising start, the innings fell away and the side was all out for 129. Skipper Martin Horner top scored with 30 not out, whilst D.Jones took three wickets for the visitors. Langley Park lost only two wickets in cruising to victory. The 2nd XI took along a mixture of veterans and youngsters for the game at a totally revitalised venue, much upgrading to the host’s ground having been completed during the close season. Committee members Jim Robinson and Jimmy Morland

once again donned their whites to help out the club, despite both being in their mid sixties and not having played for some years. The home side won the toss and elected to bat. Dan Richardson was the pick of the Railwaymen’s bowlers and was rewarded with figures of 7 for 35 as Langley Park amassed 206. In reply Shildon could only manage a total of 44 with skipper John Brennan (20) the only player into double figures.Hopefully team performances will improve in coming weeks as several players currently missing from the sides become available. On Saturday the 2nd XI entertain Ushaw Moor at the Sportsfield and the 1st XI are away in the reverse fixture.

Holidays and injuries meant that the Grey Horse could only muster 13 fit players for their vital game against their promotion rivals, Southwick Carpets.Manager Marty Joyce had his hand forced due to the players available and adopted a 4-5-1 formation.Grey Horse started brightly, however, and the midfield controlled play with a lot of possession and good passing play.It was no suprise then when Mark Greenwood linked up well and finished coolly to give the Shildon team a 1-0 lead on 15 minutes.Grey horse continued to play well, but with a minute of the half remaining Southwick forced a corner.

A floated ball into the box wasn’t dealt with, and an easy header was dispatched into the net to leave a half time score of 1-1.Some stern words at half time were needed by the manager to get everyone's focus back onto the job in hand.Only two minutes into the second half and the Grey Horse were back in the lead. A good double tackle and through ball by Dave Bulleyment set up lively front man John Myers who reacted quickly and finished well as the Southwick keeper was beaten to the ball. The introduction of Brian Burn and Jeff Dixon gave the Shildon team fresh impetous and more chances were created including one mazy

run by Burn which resulted in him shooting into the side netting from an acute angle. The game was made safe with five minutes remaining when Myers again was quickest to react this time after good work from Kev Costello had set him up for his second and Shildons third.A final score of 3-1 was well deserved and an excellent all round team performance. The Grey Horse play Sunderland Oddies in the divisional cup final Saturday, May 1st. A bus leaves from outside the pub at 9.15am and will return from Sunderland at 3.30pm. There are limited spaces available for supporters but seats are going fast.Speak to Neil Bannister at the pub to check availability.

SHILDON GREY HORSE V SOuTHWICK CARPETS

Grindon dominated from the start and put the Shildon defence under constant pressure. Goalkeeper Andrew Bell was in good form, but could do nothing on the half hour when a free header from a corner flashed past him. Falling behind gave Shildon the wake up call they needed and efforts from Danny Shoulder and Connor

Louth went close before Chris Dobsons effort was stopped on the line by a defenders hand. Joe Joyce stroked home the penalty to send Shildon in level at half time. The second half was only 5 minutes old when Joe Joyces corner was headed in by Mathew Brown and soon after another pinpoint corner from Joe Joyce was again headed into the net

by Mathew Brown, to give Shildon a 3-1 lead. Grindon never gave up hope and but for some excellent defending from Matthew Cooper they may well have got back into the game. Man of the match Nigel Turner who led the line splendidly. The team would like to thank B&A Installations for sponsoring the game.
