To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Check off study guide questions as you answer / discuss them.

Before you begin to read . . . ____ As a child did you have any irrational fears (monster-under-the-bed type)? Where

do these types of fears come from?

As you read . . .

____ 1. Are Scout, Jem & Dill's fear of Boo and the Radley house based on fact or fiction? What drew the children to this "danger"?

____ 2. As you learn more about the adults in Maycomb, do you see fears they have which are also based on ignorance?

____ 3. In chapter 10 we find the first reference to the title of the novel. Why is it wrong to kill a mockingbird? Watch for other references to the bird or parallels in the story.

____ 4. What evidence of wisdom do you see Atticus demonstrate? How do the children wish he were different? How does their view of him change after he shoots the dog?

____ 5. When do you begin to see hints that this town is divided? What foreshadowing (a hint or preview) do you see of the larger conflict to come?

____ 6. In Scout we see a conflict of influences to determine right from wrong (in her language, her treatment of others, her beliefs). What are those influences? How do they conflict? Do we face the same influences today, perhaps concerning the same or different issues?

____ 7. How does Jem's reading to Mrs. Dubose illustrate the idea that there is sometimes more going on than meets the eye? Later you will see this is a foreshadowing of the main events in Part II.

____ 8. Do you think we should adopt Rev. Sykes's method of taking the offering at church?

____ 9. When Calpurnia decides to speak differently at church, is she being wise, practical or illogical?

____ 10. How do Scout's actions prevent a potential riot at the jailhouse? Why were her words/actions effective in doing so?

____ 11. When did you first catch on to what Atticus's strategy to defend Tom might be?

____ 12. In what way are all people equal in Maycomb County? In what way are they unequal?

____ 13. Do you believe that Atticus had a special call in this town? Did it come from God?

____ 14. In what ways do you sense Harper Lee building tension in the days that followed the verdict?

____ 15. Explain the profoundness of Scout's statement, " There's just one kind of folks. Folks."

____ 16. How does Scout & Jem's discussion about killing the bug make reference to the title and to one of the main themes of the novel?

____ 17. What do you think was Harper Lee's reason for revealing Boo Radley's presence before she revealed who he was?

____ 18. Why do the men make up "a story" about what happened to Mr. Ewell? Do you think they did the right thing? Do you think Boo would have gotten a fair trial in Maycomb? Does this justify their actions?
