I am grateful and thankful for a Board of Directors that has a clear vision, a staff that is committed to providing quality services, volunteers who are always there to help, and a community that not only embraces what we do, but that supports our efforts to be the premier provider of a dynamic spectrum of individualized services supporting people with special needs.
We continue to focus our energies and talents on being as effective and efficient as possible, ensuring the best quality of life for HGH clients. Meeting the California state minimum care requirements is easy, but we will not accept meeting these minimum standards as success. Our success will be measured by exceeding these minimum standards of care as well as exceeding the goals and objectives of each individual we support.
We continue to be proud of both our long history of accomplishments and the many accomplishments achieved this past year. A few of the highlights from the past year:
• Our 3 signature fundraising events, Randy Jones 5K for Indepen-dence, Gala and Golf Classic raised almost $200,000 to help us meet our mission and vision.
• We received $25,000 in grants to support the opening of a Sensory Room and Developmental Therapy Center in Spring Valley.
• Numerous home improvements were made possible through the generosity and support of our community partners. A few that were significant include The Heller Foundation, Home Depot Foundation, City of El Cajon, City of Santee, BIA Cares, Las Patro-nas, and the County Employees Charitable Organization.
• We launched our Therapeutic and Counseling Services program in March.
• Our Respite and Early Childhood Developmental Services were expanded in San Diego County and we began providing services to families in Imperial County last January.
• The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities awarded a $100,000 grant to assist with the expansion into Imperial County that will enable HGH to meet some of the many unmet needs in Imperial County.
• In addition to the debut of our new website in July, we have now rolled out our new HGH logo and brand which represents our dedication and connection to our community and our desire to create dynamic services for our service recipients and families.
• I was honored to have been selected by The San Diego Foundation and the Stanford Graduate School of Business to attend the Exec-utive Program for Nonprofit Leaders. It was an amazing experience and I am grateful to The San Diego Foundation for the scholarship and the opportunity!
In closing, I want to again as-sure you that I am dedicated to accountability and efficiency. Every donor dollar (and every penny) that comes into HGH is spent wisely, helping to create the quality of life for our clients that each of us envisions.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more about HGH, my door is always open.
With warmest regards,
President & Chief Executive Officer
This past year has been one of significant changes, great accomplishments and expansion of services to better meet the needs of those we serve and support our mission to improve the lives of those we serve.

Imperial ValleySince birth McKayla has lived with her grandmother who is deaf, which meant she learned sign language as a toddler out of necessity. Although McKayla was not deaf, her mother Antonia was still very concerned that she was not speaking by 18 months of age, despite having developed excellent sign language skills. When she shared her concerns with her pediatrician at the local clinic in El Centro, he referred her to the San Diego- Imperial Valley Regional Center. McKayla was assessed and eventually referred to the Early Childhood Development program offered by Home of Guiding Hands.
Maria Eugenia Salazar, Home of Guiding Hands’ Early Childhood Educator, started working with McKayla in her home at age two and was able to address McKayla’s speech challenges through play-based intervention. McKayla learned quickly, assisted by a variety of tools such as musical puzzles, an iPad with interactive language based games, and music. These activities had a positive effect on McKayla’s language development and her vocabulary increased from just four words to over 20 in a matter of weeks.
The improvement observed in McKayla can be attributed to a strong partnership between Maria, McKayla and Antonia; the ability to provide services in the familiarity of the family home; and the willingness of Antonia to reinforce these newly developed skills every day with her daughter.
Today, McKayla is progressing rapidly and continues to receive services from HGH’s Early Childhood Development program. “With the help of this program, McKayla won’t be behind when she starts pre-school next year,” Antonia says with a sigh of relief.
McKayla’s success will become a reality for many more families in Imperial County with the expansion of services that will be provided by HGH’s new clinic scheduled to open in 2014. A recent grant of $100,000 provided by the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities will enable HGH to provide a centrally located clinic for speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and family education programs. Over 1,500 individuals served by the San Diego and Imperial County Regional Center (like McKayla), as well as the community in general, will have access to these much needed services and our new Resource Room.
For more information about the services provided in Imperial Valley, please contact Ana Parra, Vice President of Operations at 619-938-2874 or [email protected].
