MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINEA message from Board Chair - Dan VanKeeken

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3: 20, 21

One of the things that inspires me to serve on the Christian Stewardship Services Board is the way God continues to surprise us. Our growing list of mortgages in Quebec is a case in point: at a Board strategic planning session only a few years ago, serving our brothers and sisters in La Belle Province the way we do throughout the rest of Canada was barely on our horizon. Yet our generous God is now using CSS to provide 35 churches in Quebec with mortgages they just can’t get locally. As well, our staff has assisted a sister organization in Montreal that is starting to mirror the kinds of financial and advisory services that CSS offers elsewhere, for believers in that province. The early results are amazing.

This is in addition to our growing financial assets and the increase in the number of families our staff have been able to help steward their God-given resources and leave meaningful legacies to a host of Christian charities and non-profits, including our many partners. We continue to be amazed by the generosity of God’s people. It’s all more than I could have imagined when I joined the Board 5 years ago, and certainly more than our founders could have conceived back in 1976. A heartfelt thanks to our hardworking staff – and to God be the glory!

Our theme for this annual report is ‘To God be the Glory”, and that is so appropriate when we look back at the success He has granted us in 2018.

2 Corinthians 9:7 says “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This is the Holy Spirit’s work in us, and as you can read within the pages of this publication, many have heeded the Spirit’s leading.

Although the ‘deciding’ part of the above text is a spiritual matter, there is a practical side to this as well. It is such a pleasure to help those who

have already ‘decided in their heart’ and are now ready to act on their decision. We delight in hearing the testimony of hundreds of God’s people describe their journey to the decision, and some of those stories are retold within these pages.

Our staff would be happy to hear your story as well. On the back cover you will find a gift certificate which is simply a reminder that the services we provide are without cost to you.

Looking back on 2018, staff would often mention how busy we were. Now that we have added up the results, we can say it has been a good year! We have introduced new staff; we have served more clients; and the impact to kingdom causes has grown substantially. Had we come into this year with goals as lofty as our results, we would have said ‘mission impossible’, but when you set your sights on attaining goals that are in keeping with God’s will – the impossible happens.

We are only a staff of 11, and yet we have closed 352 new agreements, all of which have a Kingdom impact. This resulted in $17 Million dollars flowing as new donations, realized bequests, and fresh deposits. Our field staff organized and completed 28 Will Clinics, and visited 326 new clients for the first time in 2018! These visits produced $38 Million in brand new bequest allocations, of which the vast majority are destined for Kingdom causes!

CSS now has $77 Million under administration allowing us to fund 15 new mortgages, all to Christian ministries, Churches and Christian Schools.

On behalf of all our partners, and the charities supported by the funds that flow through CSS, we thank YOU for your part in this wonderful work. 1 Chronicles 29:17b – “and now I have seen Your people who are present here giving joyfully and willingly to You.”

THE REVOCABLE DEPOSIT AGREEMENT: A FLEXIBLE TOOL FROM CSS

PARTNER FEATURE Our Partner Harvest Foundation gathers Seed money to Grow and Share the Fruit with their Canadian Reformed Schools. Executive Director Bernie Kottelenberg has this to say about the CSS Revocable Deposit Agreement (RDA), which they also market in their community as the Harvest Kingdom Builder.

“We are able to promote our Harvest Kingdom Builder Deposit as a wonderful tool. It is truly ‘found income’ for our member schools. Depositors earn their own stable return and gain peace of mind knowing their capital is preserved, while working for Kingdom causes”

BUSINESSES The RDA has always been a great option for Christian Business owners to deposit reserve funds where passive income is subject to restrictions and higher taxes.

“The offsetting tax receipt for the charitable portion is useful”

CHARITIES Whether you have reserves set aside for a future building project or ministry expansion, as a charity, you qualify to receive ALL the income from your RDA with CSS.

QUEBEC COUNCIL FOR CHRISTIAN CHARITIES QCCC has always felt grateful to CSS for providing many mortgages to churches in Quebec, especially since these churches struggle to secure financing from traditional lending institutions. QCCC actively promotes the use of the RDA for member churches with reserve funds as an alternative to low income deposit options, this also bolsters the pool of funds available for further lending. CSS supports QCCC’s activities with grants, promotional tools, and templates which are then converted for use in the French language.

C hristian Stewardship Services, along with our Partners and Associate Partner Churches and Schools, have been hosting Will Clinic Events right across Canada again this past year.

AND WHAT A BANNER YEAR IT HAS BEEN! 28 Will Clinics were held throughout the year in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Ontario! Our Consultants visited with hundreds of clients, putting into place over $38 million in new bequest allocations and providing peace of mind to those they visited, knowing that their legal affairs are in order.

CSS also introduced regional Partner Will Clinics this year, with the first one being held in Cambridge, Ontario. This event allowed Partners who have supporters in the area to invite them, providing an opportunity to meet them face to face. This event was so successful, we added 4 more locations: Abbottsford BC, Edmonton AB, Chatham ON and Kanata ON for 2019!

Our Will Clinic events and the resulting personal visits are delivered without charge to supporters of our Partner community! The Will Clinic provides attendees with essential estate planning information to protect their family and assets, and also support their favorite charities, today and into the future.

In today’s competitive financial services environment, automation of information processing and business intelligence has been key to a successful outcome. To automate CSS service offerings; bequests, annuities, endowments, donor advised funds, life insurance, gifts to charity, securities donation, revocable deposit funds, and mortgage loans. They are “Setting the Bar High” for foundation type institutions today and into the future. Introducing Trinergy as our operational system provides an automated, effective approach of serving our donors’ wishes, while effectively delivering donors’ gifts and administering loans to charitable organizations. AMI Trinergy’s business intelligence model offers our partner charities an enhanced window to their prospective offerings.

TRIUMPH OUT OF TRAGEDY CREATING A LEGACY THAT LASTS

To lose a child is the worst thing any parent could ever imagine. It is an unexplainable and heartbreaking event.

On February 19, 2013, The Poelman family endured this terrible experience when their daughter Kyndra ReAnn Poelman passed away at the age of 22 years old in a car accident. In memory of their daughter, the Poelmans created a foundation through Christian Stewardship Services called Kyndra’s Foundation of Love.

Kyndra had a love for children and Kyndra’s Foundation of Love gives to charities that were dear to her heart. Children in need all over the world are now receiving Christian education and coming to know the Lord! Schools have also been built and missionary trips are on going.

Setting up a CSS-style foundation can be a wonderful option to give to your favorite charities. Friends and family can join you in making a difference while CSS takes care of all the administration. We manage the fund, send out funds on instruction of the family, and issue the tax receipts for donations.

The creation of Kyndra’s Foundation of Love has allowed Kyndra’s dream to live on. Touching lives and sharing the gospel all over the world, the Poelman family indeed have turned a tragedy into a triumph.

Volunteers on an EduDeo mission project

One of our clients have had a Revocable Deposit Agreement with CSS since 2002, and had heard of other services CSS offered at various venues, but had never invited a consultant to meet with them to explore possibilities that might fit their particular situation. Finally, in the fall of 2017 they once again heard about CSS at a Redeemer University College event and took the time to discuss the possibility of setting up a foundation with our Consultant, Marinus Koole. They have been strong supporters of charity throughout the years and were now wondering how to make this legacy last. Marinus introduced the Donor Advised Fund: a simple and effective tool which CSS offers that allows the funds to continue to be used in Kingdom work and generate income, while distributions are made to the clients’ chosen charities upon demand.

Their desire was for their legacy to continue to “give till the Lord returns”, or as the secular world might say: “in perpetuity”. They have opened their Fund with some current assets and will add to it through their Last Will and Testament. Any desired current distributions may be directed from their Donor Advised Fund to charity, and a final Letter of Direction with CSS defines how much, to whom, and when the remaining balance will be distributed. Further instructions may be modified by their executors upon their death if required.

Atwell Centre Pregnancy Options Support is a Christian pregnancy care centre which provides education, caring support and practical assistance to women and their partners. Atwell offers a place of empowerment where we believe that good information and support can lead to pregnancy choices free from the panic that often accompanies the news of an unintended pregnancy.

Atwell has been in ministry for seven years in downtown Hamilton.  They presently offer several services, chief among them is pregnancy options support which provides critical information about parenting, adoption and abortion to their clients.  Atwell also offers post-abortion support, adoption support, post apprehension grief support and Pregnancy and Beyond mentoring support which includes regular access to their “Baby Boutique,” a supply of maternity and infant clothing. For new dads they offer male mentoring as the fathers embark on the challenge of parenthood for the first time. As well, Atwell presents a community youth program called SHARE (Sexual Health and Relationship Education) in various spaces around the city such as public schools and churches.

As they look to the future, Atwell is excited to be opening a satellite centre in the Burlington/Oakville area in 2020. Additionally, they are adding limited medical services to both the Hamilton and future Halton locations which include Point-of-Care ultrasound, as well as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) diagnosis and treatment.
