OPEN HOUSE SAT & SUN 1-4 PM • SAN CARLOS 2 SE OF 1ST, CARMELDella Walker was a childhood
friend of FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT,and when she asked him to design aseaside HOUSE for her, he was 84years old. He didn’t know that, so heaccepted the challenge (his only oceanhouse), and personally supervised itsconstruction in 1954. “Make it low,”said Della, “so my neighbors viewswill not be interrupted.” He did that, and now the prow of the house, onScenic drive near Martin Way, drivesceaselessly into the waves that buffetCarmel Bay. It is designed like anocean liner, facing the tireless sea. Theliving room, slightly sunken, looksacross the deck through stepped-downwindows like a captain’s bridge. Thecorridors, right and left, are narrow.Doors are slender and locked tight withcatches. The kitchen is a galley, savingspace in every corner, yet totally effi-cient. Staterooms along the halls leadback to a master bedroom with viewsto port and starboard, and a fireplace todefy the fiercest weather. The roof iscopper, now oxidized to a timelessgreen. Della doesn’t live there any-more, but the house will last forever.

Couple quietly cares for a unique Carmel gem
By MARY BROWNFIELD
FOR 17 years, it’s been a labor of love— though sometimes they wish theystill occupied the diminutive home
they once had. Since Connie and Ken Hesspurchased the 6,800-square-foot historichouse on sprawling grounds at Torres and11th that catches the eye of everyone whowalks past, they have worked to honor itshistory while making it livable.
In a town of tiny lots, little cottages andoceanside vacation homes, the Hesses’ houseis unique. Built in Spanish Eclectic style onsloping acreage near Mission Trail NaturePreserve in 1925 for West Point graduateand World War I pilot Col. Henry L. Watsonand his family, the house has only had fourowners.
Perhaps the best known to Carmeliteswas the Countess Claude deKinnoull, awriter, artist and benefactress of theMonterey County SPCA who bought thehome in 1948 after hearing Carmel was atown of artists and writers. The countess, according to a report prepared for the city in1993, was born to one of the wealthiest fam-ilies in Britain, became a countess after mar-rying a Scottish earl, competed in world-class sports-car racing, brought medical sup-plies to Catholic missions in Africa, foundedand directed a hospice for the poor anddying in Paris, studied art in Spain, used hertheatrical skills to work as a spy uncoveringCommunist agents during World War II,and fled to Carmel as the Germans invadedFrance because Britain would have placed asix-month quarantine on her dog. She had
hoped her home would become a haven forother war refugees, but that plan never man-ifested.
In Carmel, besides devoting herresources to the SPCA, she was “one of themore vociferous residents at public meet-ings against attempts to commercialize thetown,” according to the city’s historicalaccount.
But her home and its grounds did notthrive under her care, according to theHesses. The gardens became overgrown andrambling, and the stately house fell into dis-repair. She lived there until her death in1985.
Enter the third owner, Grady O’Hara, who bought the property after deKinnoull’sdeath and spent the next decade fixing it upwith the help of local landscape architectGary Girard.
He took on renovations that included theroofs, balconies, doorways, gates, a fountainand even the house’s heavy, hand-carvedstructual beams. Details such as patternspainted around windows in the dining roomare also attributed to him.
The Hesses — he an entrepreneur (PineCone readers might recognize his name asthe founder of Science Buddies, a websitethat helps kids develop science-fair projects)and she an architectural interior designer —bought the home in 1994, almost by chance.
“We lived up in Fremont, and Ken had acompany up there, so we didn’t take manyvacations and decided to purchase a secondhome here,” Connie Hess said.

They bought a small house across the streetfrom the stately estate they occupy now.
“Those were new homes, and we didn’thave time to remodel or anything, so we want-ed a new home,” she explained. The Hessesobtained their Carmel vacation house in 1992.
Soon, though, they wanted a larger piece ofproperty — something harder to come by inCarmel — that would better fit her midwest-ern roots and need for space, inside and out-side.
“But we liked being in town, because wecould walk everywhere,” she recalled.
Around that time, O’Hara decided he want-ed to downsize, so he put his historic homeand 1.5-acre lot on the market.
“We didn’t buy it, at first, because it wasn’tthe right style for us,” she said. “My husbandwould have preferred something more con-temporary.”
But after four months, the house was stilllisted for sale, so they decided to take a tour, and the rest is history. O’Hara bought their

downpours. First, they removed every clay barrel tile, salvagingwhat they could and getting the rest from an old farm in Salinas. Then they repaired the sub-roof and replaced its waterprooflayer. They added an overhang and gutters, which are not com-mon on homes of such design, but helped keep water runningdown the walls and into the basement.
Doors and windows also leaked, so the Hesses had a metalfabricator fashion doors in the Spanish Eclectic style of thehome to replace the old wood pieces, which they later used in
remodeling the basement. The original floor tile of the great room that O’Hara
stripped, cleaned and patched offers a warmth to the largespace, while risers in the stairs leading to the second floorinclude colorful decorative tile found throughout Spain — andin some buildings in downtown Carmel.
Connie Hess designed the living room’s interior, whichincludes glaze-fired racu vases and wall sculptures by local artistMichael Gustavson and steel and glass tables by Albert Paley. When deKinnoull lived there, one of her mosaics was displayedon a living room wall, but O’Hara removed it when heredesigned the fireplace.

THE 6,300-square-foot decidedly modern home at 100Via Milpitas in Carmel Valley may have an upscale, urban feel, but neighbors are distant, and quiet is
ubiquitous. Bird calls and perhaps the sound of horses at thehistoric Holman Ranch are about as noisy as it gets.
The five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom home — forsale for $3,950,000 — overlooks the pastures of the HolmanRanch and the St. Lucia mountains. Designed by architect TeriTakikawa and built by contractor John Petrushkin, the house isfar from generic.
“It’s a striking modern design ... it’s not a cutsey CarmelTuscan wannabe,” she said of the house, which was also built tomany of the latest green standards. “There’s a lot of sustainableproducts and other materials.”
Friends of the current owners of the house purchased theland — originally part of the Holman Ranch — several yearsago with the intent of building their dream home.
They hired an architect, had some of the land graded anddrilled a well. But after some time, the friends gave up the pro-ject and sold the property to its current owners, who hiredPetrushkin and Takikawa to take over the building of a house.
Though it’s in rustic Carmel Valley, the three-story homeitself doesn’t at all evoke a “country” feel. The sharp, angularlines and the use of stucco, tile, wood, stainless steel and chromeare reminiscent of a building in a European city. But the houseis not cold like some contemporary designs can be.
“The thing that is unusual is the home’s warmth,” Calleysaid, adding that rich Belgian oak floors help add to that.
On the first level is the guest bedroom and bath, media roomoutfitted with audiophile speakers and wired for quadraphonicsound, foyer, three-car garage and wine storage area.
The home’s numerous and vast windows offer lots of naturallight. There are no curtains, which are essentially unnecessarybecause of the home’s seclusion.
Modern, easy living in rustic, rugged Carmel ValleyAnd while the vast meadow defines the serene character of
the rural property, numerous shops, restaurants and wineries inCarmel Valley Village are within a short jaunt from the newhome, which lies in one of the sunniest areas of the valley.
“It’s a very special property,” said Karen Calley, realtor forColdwell Banker Del Monte. “It’s minutes from the Village, butyou feel you are in the hinterlands.”
(Top) This home, withits sharp lines and lotsof glass, chrome andstainless steel, is inCarmel Valley, thoughit would also be wel-come in a Europeancity. (Far right) Thekitchen offers tons ofcounter space andnew high-end appli-ances. And if you’reinto enjoying a mag-nificent view whiletaking a bath, themaster bath (right) isyour dream come true.

Included on the second floor are the twobedrooms, living room, office, pantry, laundryroom and kitchen with access to the roof deck, which offers sweeping views of the oak mead-ow. “There are three fireplaces, and one ofthem is outside,” Calley said.
Sustainable materials, natural light fromthe windows and other green technology wereused to cut down on power usage, Calley said.Radiant heat and cooling are also features. “It’sdesigned to be net-zero on the grid,” sheexplained.
A chef ’s kitchen with state-of-the-art appli-ances features three different surfaces ofleather, granite, concrete and stainless steel. The range is a full-size Wolf, and there are twosinks and a wet bar area.
“If you like to cook, there’s is just an unbe-lievable amount of space,” Calley said. “Andthe kitchen is very utilitarian and functional.”
There are an impressive 2,200 square feet ofoutdoor decking, designed for as much out-door living as possible in the sunny Carmel
Valley climate. There’s even space for a futureswimming pool. And with its own well, thereare no real worries about water.
The master bedroom, which has a walk-incloset, and bathroom are on the third level, which also contains a balcony and anotherbedroom. An elevator is accessible from allthree floors.
Immediately surrounding the home is land-scaping consisting of low maintenance,drought-free vegetation.
“There are a lot of warm tones,” she said.“It’s all about different shades of greens anddifferent textures.”
Though the home has only been on themarket for a few weeks, Calley said theresponse from brokers and others has alreadybeen excellent.

fireplace and comfortable places to sit, sip and chat undershade-loving plants like camellia, ferns and clivia.
Hybrid tea roses flank a set of stairs leading down the slop-ing property to the lawn, while one of several fountains payshomage to a larger version in the courtyard at the nearbyCarmel Mission.
An ornamental pond contains koi and goldfish — though“raccoons consider the pond to be their personal sushi bar,”Connie Hess lamented. “The remaining fish truly represent the‘survival of the fittest.’”
A graveled road below the house provides access to the cean-othus-lined stairway to the lawn, where a gigantic NorfolkIsland pine and a stand of coast redwoods serve as sentriesamong agapanthus and acanthus.
Hess loves color for the texture and variety it adds to land-scaping, so she often strategically places plants and flowers thatbreak up the green expanses. Red flowering plums achieve thatpurpose, as does the red Japanese maple that stands out amongthe holly trees.
At the back gate in the stucco wall at the lower edge of theproperty, deKinnoull’s “Tree of Life” stone mosaic, also reminis-cent of pieces found in southern Spain, leads the way out towardthe park.
Hess also strives for drought-tolerant plants wherever possi-ble, and underneath the stand of oaks, she designed a dry creekbed to reflect that philosophy, as well.
Just outside the kitchen window lies her small vegetable gar-
den, which for years produced her Monterey County Fair award-winning green beans (though she admitted taking first prizeseveral years when she was the only person to enter them). Alegitimate green thumb, however, she has rightfully earned blueribbons for the beans among more intense competition, andhas succeeded with other vegetables and lemons, too.
Nearby, a zigzag hedge, iron sculptures, nasturtium androsemary continue the drought-tolerant theme.
In fact, the gardens contain many whimsical and beautifulpieces Hess has collected over the years to help convey her senseof humor.
Among the most interesting of these is a piece of wall cutfrom the shed that was demolished to make way for the newguesthouse and studio. A former owner had painted a windowonto the stucco and placed wrought-iron bars over it to make itappear to match the real window on the other side. One row ofclay barrel tile had lined the slanted roof to add another illusionto the shed. When it was torn down, the Hesses saved the paint-ed window, which can be found at the end of the driveway.
NNeeww nnaammee mmaayy ttaakkee aawwhhiilleeDespite their hard work and years of effort, they admitted
their to-do list seems to grow, rather than shrink. Nonetheless, they are clearly fond of their Carmel home and are happy toshare its beauty, history and stories with people.
But they object to its being called the Kinnoull Estate, espe-cially since the countess did little to preserve the special, uniqueplace she owned for nearly four decades.
So, for now, it’s simply called the Hess residence.“We’re thinking about coming up with a new name for it,”
Connie Hess said. “But that’s pretty low on the list.”

THE STAND of majestic Italian stone pines that wel-comes visitors to Stonepine in Carmel Valley doesmore than give the resort its name.
The pines — which were planted eight decades ago —add a touch of the old world to an estate that would not be outof place in Northern Italy or the South of France.
Located about 12 miles from Highway 1, at 150 E.Carmel Valley Road, the secluded 330-acre estate is not onlyone of California’s more memorable historic properties, butit offers guests a welcome respite from the summertime fogof the Monterey Peninsula — in a spectacular setting ofrolling hills, sun-blessed meadows and shady oaks.
“You have nature in your backyard,” explained Michelle
Hentschel. The new owners restored the property and itsbuildings before turning them into a resort in 1986.
The Hentschels’ aim is to offer visitors an unforgettablevacation in an elegant setting.
“In its vibrant history, Stonepine has hosted a wide vari-ety of guests, from royalty, Hollywood celebrities and worldleaders, to couples seeking a weekend escape from neighbor-ing cities,” Gordon Hentschel explained.
Even in recent years, Stonepine has attracted an impres-sive variety of famous guests. Tom Cruise once stayed therewith Nicole Kidman, while Andre Agassi and Brooke Shieldshad their wedding reception there in 1997. And formerCalifornia Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVitostarred in a 1994 movie, “Junior,” that featured Stonepine asa hideaway for Schwarzenegger as he was getting ready tohave a baby.

his food.“It’s neither California cuisine nor
French,” Peluffo said of his culinary cre-ations. “It’s ‘estate food,’ with a little twist ofProvence.”
The chef doesn’t believe in traveling farfor his ingredients.
“Everything is local,” he explained. “Weget our fish at the wharf in Monterey, we getproduce from the local farmers’ market, andwe grow herbs in our garden.”
Peluffo’s ultimate goal as a chef is to offerguests a dining experience that they won’tsoon forget. “People want to be surprised,”said the chef.
