TAACC Mission StatementThe TAACC advocates and promotes the
economic growth and development of African American owned businesses by focusing on the development of business opportunities, business alliances, and legislative advocacy.
Vision StatementThe TAACC is focused on serving the minority
business community and has as its goal the promotion of economic development through
the creation of jobs and provision of assistance to small businesses.
As a result the entire Toledo and Northwest Ohio Region is strengthened.
“It is critical that we support African American (AA) owned businesses because they will typically hire people from the AA Community whom mainstream and majority businesses will not hire. This
helps to promote an attitude of responsibility and increased
feeling of self worth in this group. It also leads to reduced crime rates because these people are now gainfully employed and they become less of a drain on the social service system”.
– Jay Black, Jr., President TAACC
ABOUT US The TAACC was initially formed in response to several questions: Who in the greater Toledo area consistently and systemically advocates on behalf of African American owned businesses in a coordinated way? What organization(s) focuses on providing programming and networking opportunities for African American owned businesses, and challenges African American owned businesses to do better so they can achieve long term success? Who is attempting to educate our Community on the importance of supporting African American owned businesses? The answer to these questions was a resounding “no one does it all”. The TAACC was formed to address these issues and fill a leadership void in the minority business community.

Interesting But Little Known Facts*• Less than 2% of African Americans are
entrepreneurs.• According to the last economic census in 2007,
African American’s (AA) owned 1.9MM nonfarm U.S. businesses. These AA owned firms accounted for 7.1% of all non-farm businesses in the U.S., .8% of total employment and generated $137.5 billion in receipts. There were 106,824 AA employer firms that employed 921,032 people and had a total payroll of $23.9 billion.
• Nationally, in the Jewish, Asian, Hispanic, predominately white suburbs, other ethnic European and Middle Eastern enclaves, the dollar is recycled over and over again sustaining the neighborhoods, funding the schools and empowering their communities for 7-29 days before it leaves their community. Conversely, the African American consumer dollar stays in the community less than six hours. In Toledo, the dollar turns over approximately 0.7 times before it leaves the African American Community! This must change.
• Toledo’s AA’s purchasing power in 2009 was $1.5 billion
• Food Prepared at home $93.6MM• Food Consumed away from home $53.7MM• Housing/Rent $436MM• Utilities, fuels, and public
services $119.2MM• Telephone services
$39.8MM• Household furnishings &
equipment $27.6MM• Apparel and services
$57.3MM• Transportation $171.6MM• Vehicle
Insurance$28.5MM• Healthcare $57.4MM• Entertainment $45.8MM• Personal care products and services $17.4MM• Education $19.5MM• Personal insurance &
pensions $115.4MM

Top 8 Reasons to Support Toledo African American Chamber of Commerce
(TAACC ) Member Businesses:1. Jobs – Small businesses account for the largest
share of net new jobs generated each year. By supporting TAACC Member Businesses we begin to address the unemployment rate in the African American Community (which has the highest unemployment rate of any group). We also begin to address crime rates, and health and education disparities in the AA Community as our Businesses grow.
2. Community – TAACC Member Business Owners are typically from the most underserved communities in this area and understand first hand
what’s needed to make these communities better. As TAACC Businesses grow economically, they are better able to reinvest in the underserved communities that they are from. TAACC Businesses
have a natural interest in the community’s long term success. Community-based businesses are essential to being positive role models to our youth and their owners frequently serve on local boards and support community based Churches. The youth of our Community need to know that it is possible for them to succeed in business if they choose business ownership as their career path.
3. Economy – We stimulate the African American (AA) economy when we support TAACC Member Businesses. We must do more to makes sure the “dollar turns over” multiple times in the AA Community just as it does in other communities. By doing so we help ourselves become less dependent on others because our money stays in our community longer.

Membership Drive Kick-Off Meeting
4. Experience – Purchasing goods and services from TAACC Member Businesses is generally a more personal, pleasant and relaxed experience. TAACC Member Businesses go above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied.
5. Culture – Supporting TAACC Member Businesses helps to preserve a unique culture that plays a critical role in the overall culture in Northwest Ohio.
6. Loyalty – TAACC Member Businesses are committed to improving those communities that they serve. They have a vested interest in our community.
7. Environment – TAACC Member Businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation. The more money that can be spent locally helps to strengthen the overall local economy.
8. Diversity – TAACC Member Businesses embrace diversity and inclusion. We understand more than anyone that diversity/inclusion makes good business sense. Those businesses who practice diversity/inclusion make business and product selections based in part on the needs and interest of our community’s well being.
These charts illustrate how dollars spent at locally-owned businesses are retained and re-circulated in the local economy at a rate of 68% compared to only 43% of dollars spent at non-local businesses. This does not include profits made by locally-owned businesses that stay in the community.
