Dear Neil,

The Building Regulations 2010 (as amended) Grenfell Tower Refurbishment, Grenfell Road, London. W l l ITH Application No. FP/14/03563

Thank you for your email the contents of which have been noted.

I would draw your attention to Section 8.5.2 of BS 6180:1999 "code of practice for barriers in and about buildings" states: "Where the barrier protects a difference in level greater than 600 mm, a handrail should always be used. Continuous fixing should be used forfixing the handrail to the glass as individual fixing points may introduce unacceptable stress concentrations. The handrail should be attached to the glass in such a manner that, should a glass panel fracture, the handrail: will remain in position and, will not fail i fthe design load is applied across the resulting gap"

I would inform you that other than the point mentioned above, relating to the provision of a handrail to the top of the glass panels. I have no adverse observations to make on the proposals submitted in respect of the guarding with regards to compliance with Part K2 in Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations. I would also confirm that no additional information is required to be submitted to this office in respect of this matter. HI Steve

The glass needs to be 'safety' glass with the balustrade designed to take linear loading and centre panel Impact loads as defined In part K/ BS standards.

In theory this can be achieved with laminate and/ or toughened glass, however laminate is viewed as preferable only where the glass Is adequately clamped along entire edges so In a breakage scenario the panel does not fall as a complete panel onto some below. With limited single point fixings toughened glass Is preferable as a shower of small pieces Is less likely to cause Injury.

I believe we are clamped along the bottom edge so we could go laminated as long as It meets safety glass criteria and Impact loads as defined In the AD part K.

John-

By way of copy you may wish to comment further on this- If you could do so by way of return bearing In mind the quick response required to facilitate ordering this would be much appreciated.

Best Regards Nell

Nell,

To conform to B Control does this glass need to be toughed laminate or just laminate.

Laminate would be good as delivery t ime Is 2 weeks shorter.

Many thanks
