3D Printed Key Rings. Lesson 1

Lesson 1 Objectives To be able to use Google Sketch Up. To be familiar with the different uses.

To be able to use basic tools.

So lets get started!Open SketchUp or download from http://www.sketchup.com

For this exercise we will use Woodworking - Millimetres



These are the different tools we will be using

Use the ‘rectangle’ tool to draw a footprint


Use the ‘Push/pull’ tool to pull objects up


Draw shapes onto the face of an object


Use ‘eraser’ tool to delete parts


Use ‘orbit’ tool to change the view


Use the ‘select’ tool to highlight a line or shape


The ‘move’ tool allows you to move selected shapes


The ‘paint bucket’ tool lets you colour your drawing


The ‘pan’ tool lets you move the view

Step 1 Draw yourself a basic shape for your Key Ring


Step 1 Using the tools we learnt last lesson create an edge/ design around the side of the basic shape.


Step 3 Once you have done this you need to remove any interior lines so it makes one solid shape.


Step 5 Using the ‘off set’ tool you can select one of the edges and create a smaller outline of your shape on the inside.

Once you have done this you can extrude the centre so it’s slightly inset.


Step 6 To add 3D text you need to click the TOOLS button at the top of the page and select 3D TEXT.

You can then type what ever you wish in the dialogue box and change the font style, then place it on the chosen face.


Step 7 To change the size and depth of the text you need to press the ‘scale’ button at the top.

You will get small green squares across the text, you can move these wherever you wish and change the depth of the text.


Step 8 You can add more text if you wish. The more creative the better. Then extrude a hole to attach your key ring.


Lesson 3Print your Keyring!


Step 1 Open your Sketch Up file from last lesson.


Step 2 You need to export the file from Sketch up. You need to click ‘file export’ then click 3D model.

A dialogue box will appear, you need to select in the bottom section OBJ file. Save this in a folder of your choice.


Step 3 Open Cura. If you haven’t downloaded Cura yet visit https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software


Step 4 Click the ‘load’ button at the top of page and select your file from the 3D folder you saved it in.


Step 5 Your file will be imported


Step 6 You need to click the ‘scale’ button at the bottom of the screen to reduce/enlarge the size of your key ring.

You can type the numbers in the different axis to change the scale.


Step 7 You now need to rotate your plaque so that it is laid flat to print. You can do this two ways, one with the circles around the shape and

the other using the ‘rotate’ buttons.


Step 9 To save the key ring onto your SD (removable storage) card you need to click the button at the top of the screen. This has the time it will

take to print underneath.


Step 10Now eject the SD Card and place it

into the 3D printer. Select your file and print.
