Monsignor Al and Father Carlos cordially invite you to the bilingual All Souls Mass of Remembrance for our parishioners and family members who have died in the last year this Wednesday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the church lower level. All are welcome. For more information, contact Shelly White at [email protected].

The Book of the Names of the Dead was placed near the baptismal font on All Souls Day. Everyone is welcome to inscribe the names of their deceased loved ones. As you pass the Book and see the burning candle upon entering and leaving church during November, remember to offer up a prayer for all whose names are enshrined there.

All Souls Day is the Day of the Dead (el Día de Muertos) in Mexico. A beautiful custom associated with the Day of the Dead is the family altar or ofrenda. Famil-iarized by the recent Disney movie “Coco,” these altars are based on popular belief that the souls of the departed return at this time of the year, and show them that they are not forgotten. An ofrenda was erected in the church narthex on All Souls Day by members of our Hispanic community and will remain through the All Souls novena.

Hurricane Michael left the Florida panhandle reeling. Many of us know people impacted by this storm. Two years ago IHM 5th grade teacher Bridget Zicarelli relocated to the Gulf Coast after serving 17 years at IHM. Her new school, St. John’s in Panama City, was severely damaged. The principal is working to find a temporary location for them to host the school, but it will be later this month at the earliest that they can even think about resuming classes.

Prior to Michael, Hurricane Florence caused serious damage and suffering for many in the Carolinas, including St. Mary Catholic School in Wilmington, NC. Founded by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1869, St. Mary has been a beacon of faith to the community for 149 years. The school sustained damage to all of its buildings and classrooms. The damage to some buildings and teaching materials is so severe they may remain closed to students for the remainder of the school year.

IHM will be collecting Target, Walmart and Visa gift cards, as well as monetary donations, to assist in the re-building and refurnishing of these schools. Checks may be made payable to St. John Catholic School or St. Mary Catholic School. Donations will be collected in the IHM School office through November 15.

Q How do the baptized carry out their rights and responsibilities?

A As baptized Christians, we have immense privileges and responsibilities. We are called to gather together on Sundays and holy days to join the community of believers in praise and worship. We are called to celebrate the sacraments es-pecially the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood– the Eucharist, our great prayer of thanksgiving. We are called to know and to live according to the law of God. For evert y Christian, living out our Baptism looks a little different be-cause each of us has a unique vocation—God calls each of us in a different way. One thing is certain: Baptism changes us and makes immense demands on us. Not to live out our Baptism in service of God and neighbor is to be like the per-son in the parable who received a coin and buried it in the ground instead of investing it and letting it grow. For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

COMING UP IN ADULT FAITH FORMATION Sunday, November 11, 10:15-11:15 a.m. IHM School Library Dr. Tracy McGill will give a presentation on the life and teachings of Pope Paul VI, one of the Church’s newly can-onized saints. Join us to learn more about this Pope of many firsts—the first to travel globally, to embrace leaders of other Christian traditions, even to extend his apostolic blessings to the moon!--who also served as a courageous voice of conscience in a tumultuous world. “The world calls for and expects from us simplicity of life, the spirit of prayer, charity towards all, especially towards the lowly and the poor, obedience and hu-mility... Without this mark of holiness, our word will have difficulty in touching the heart of modern man.”

BE A FAITHFUL CITIZEN: REMEMBER TO VOTE! According to Catholic teaching, it is a moral obligation to participate in political life and advocate as a faithful citizen on behalf of those who are poor and vulner-able. Four principles of Catholic social doctrine are key to making practical judg-ments when voting:

1. Promoting and defending the dignity of the human person

2. Supporting the family and subsidiarity in local, state and national institutions.

3. Working for the common good where human rights are protected and basic responsibilities are met

4. Acting in solidarity with concern for all as our brothers and sisters, especially the poor and most vulnerable (Faithful Citizenship, Nos. 40-52).

JUST BAKERY! On the first weekend of each month we welcome “Just Bakery” to IHM. Your purchase of a cookie or a loaf this morning after the 9:00 or 11:30 mass in the historic church helps this local non-profit provide employment and a just wage to recently-resettled refugees in the Atlanta area.

GRIEFSHARE GriefShare will not meet on November 7. Sessions will re-sume on Wednesday November 14.

SOCIAL JUSTICE BOOK CLUB DISCUSSION Monday, November 5 This November 5 at 7:30 pm, the Social Justice Committee will have a book club discussion of Bryan Stevenson's book Just Mercy and wrongful capital punishment. We will meet in Middle School classroom 8-1. Please purchase the book now, and start reading. Last August, Pope Francis revised the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding the death penal-ty, stating that it can never be sanctioned because it “is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.”

FORTUNATE & FAITHFUL FAMILIES ANNUAL RETREAT November 18 Fortunate and Faithful Families, a support group in the Archdiocese of Atlanta for families with LGTB members, will host their annual retreat Sunday, November 18, from 12:00-7:00pm at the Chancery. 2401 Lake Park Drive SE, Smyrna 30080. Cost is $25 (per person) or $40 (two from one family). Registration is required by November 12. To register and for more information, please call 770-924-3920.
