LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings family and friends, I hope you all are enjoying the warmth of the summer

after a roller coaster winter. We are now gearing up for our annual family reunion to be held Sept. 27 & 28, 2014.

We are so fortunate that Mr. Gene Coleman, the clerk of the Court, has offered to open the Clerk's office on Saturday afternoon and show us some early Boyd Family Records, such as wills and deeds. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of our out-of-town family members to see these documents. We will gather at the tavern Saturday at 2:30 pm and walk to the courthouse from there.

If you are not interested in the Courthouse visit, relax at the tavern and peruse our genealogical files, or just visit with kinfolk.

Cocktails and a BBQ dinner on Saturday night will be casual and fun. After dinner we will have a special treat. Our cousin Ann Keeling will speak on one of Alexander Boyd, the Elder' s daughters, Ann Dandridge Swepson Boyd Hawkins Russell Johnson.

On Sunday, we will welcome back Rev. Russell Church Burchard to lead us in worship at the Historic Boydton Presbyterian Church. This will be Russell's third year preaching to us. If you have missed him before, you have another opportunity this fall. He is a gifted preacher and a true blessing to our reunion.

After church we will gather for our annual family photo in front of the tavern. The sooner we assemble for this, the sooner we eat!! Lunch follows immediately.

Aren't we blessed to have this family organization and our annual gatherings? I love getting to know each of you and being a part of such an interesting and diverse group which has such a strong common bond between them.

Let's once again break bread together this fall. Please send your reunion response sheets as soon as you can. Blessings to you all, Robin

During the Boyd Family Reunion, we will be visited by the spirit of one of our most remarkable ancestors, Mrs. Anne Swepson Boyd Hawkins Russell Johnson. She will appear to us to explain briefly how she got this incredibly long name. The laws and customs of her day were restrictive of women's rights and activities. She will describe how she strategically navigated through these laws and customs while managing to position herself in ways that were beneficial to her and her nine children. She will give a first-hand account of how she skillfully transitioned through the roles of gracious First Lady of North Carolina, productive and hardworking plantation mistress, and shrewd proprietress of a fashionable spring resort. Lastly she will tell us the secret of why her spirit still roams among the mortals of the earth. This is a visitor not to be missed.

SOMETHING NEW IN THE TAVERN Many thanks to Ann Keeling and her son, Tyree 0.

Joyce for the montage given to the Boyd Tavern, which tells the story of, and puts faces with, the Finch connection to the Boyd Family. Tyree is the Layout and Graphic Designer for this beautiful montage and Ann did the research.

Finch Family Connection to the Boyd Tavern

For the thirty years between 1863 and 1893, the Boyd Tavern was under the ownership of the three brothers; either Langston Easley Finch, Richard Henry Finch or_ George Beverly Finch.

Langston Easley Finch and Richard Henry Finch had connections to the Boyd family through their marriages and George Beverly Finch was a prominent Boydton Lawyer and a banker.

Langston Easley Finch Tabitha Walker Boyd Finch

Langston Easley Finch & Martha Emmett Boyd Finch

Langston Easley Finch (1825-1896) (First of the brothers to own the Tavern) Martha Emmett Boyd and Tabitha Walker Boyd were daughters of Richard Boyd and Lucy Anne Goode Boyd and great-granddaughters of Alexander Boyd, Sr. (the Elder) and Ann Swepson.

On September 11, 1851, Martha Emmett Boyd married

Langston Easley Finch at the age of 22. They had seven children. Martha Boyd Finch died June 6, 1863. At the end of the following month Langston Easley Finch bought the Boyd Tavern. In 1865, Langston Easley Finch married Martha's younger sister, Tabitha Walker Boyd. They had nine children. Tabitha worked as co-editor in the newspaper business with her husband and in 1866 received recognition from the Women's Tribune.

Langston Easley Finch was the editor of several county newspapers (Mecklenburg Herald, Banner o/Truth, and Clarksville Tobacco Plant). He used his position as newspaper editor and his own funds to champion the establishment of railroads, banks, and institutions of higher education in Mecklenburg County.

George Beverly Finch (1837-1900) (Second of the Finch Brothers to own the Tavern.) George Finch managed financial transactions relating to the ownership of the Boyd Tavern. He married Miss Marrow from Union Level, VA and they built the beautiful home known as "The Hill" located in Boydton on Jefferson Street and owned by Robert and Jennie Salzman.

Richard Henry Finch Margaret Elizabeth (Bettie) Burney Finch

Richard Henry Finch (1827-1893) In 1882, Richard Henry Finch bought the Boyd Tavern from his brother George Beverly Finch. Richard Henry Finch was a dentist and businessman in Mecklenburg County, VA. In 1868, Richard Finch married Rebecca Elizabeth (Bettie) Burney who was step granddaughter of Ann Swepson Boyd. The suite of bedroom furniture in the Finch Room was a wedding gift to this couple. This same bedroom suite was given back to the Boyd Tavern by the late Dr. and Mrs. William Finch (Lucy Bedinger Finch).

SEE YOU AT THE REUNION!

Boyd Genealogy

We are extremely grateful for Mrs. (W.R.) Edwina Taylor Goddard for her extensive, thorough research on the Boyd Family genealogy. She visited Scotland, England, and Wales numerous times and tirelessly visited libraries, churches, grave yards, and sites throughout Great Britain to get the accurate, provable origin of the Boyds.

The progenitor of the noble, ancient Boyd family was Alan, (d. 1153), who was descended from Fleance and married Margaret, daughter of Tergus, Earl of Galloway. They had five children- 1st child died in infancy, 2nd, Walter, 3rd, Simon, 4th, no knowledge and 5th, Adam. Alan was created the Lord High Stewart circa 1066. His son Walter was 1st Lord High Stewart and Simon was Walter's successor. Walter's name is found in the Foundation Chapter of the Monastery of Paisley in 1161. The noble family of the Boyds comes through Simon's line, who is the first recorded ancestor of the Boyds or Boyts. Walter was a Catholic and Simon was a Protestant, so the Stewarts (Walter's family) inherited the crown instead of Simon's family, the Boyds.

Simon's oldest son was designated Dominus Robertus Boyd in 1205 and died prior to 1240.

The next recorded descendent is Sir Robert Boyd, Knight ( d. 13 3 3 ), who was granted the lands of Kilmarnock by Robert the Bruce.

We do not know exactly wi1cre our family fits in this history, since we do not have the names of the parents of Robert or Elizabeth Anderson Boyd. (Alexander, the Elder' s grandparents).

Between the years of 1205 and 1733, the approximate year of Alexander, the Elder's birth, there were at least 14 Lords and Earls mentioned. The last was William, ( d.1746), the 4th and last Earl of Kilmarnock. William was attainted in 1746 for his part in the uprising in 1745 and lost his title and lands. (Later regained)

When the Boyd families of America search their genealogical records in Europe, they run into much difficulty because of the fear and oppression the Boyds felt for the government and the Catholics. Walter, being Catholic and Simon, being Protestant was the cause of animosity and rivalry between their families for many years. Feuds continued between the Boyds and Stewarts causing the Boyds to be secretive about their heritage, making it hard to find genealogical records.

King James, III was born in July 1451. He was made King of Scotland when he was nine (9) years old on August 10, 1460. He reigned ineffectively for 30 years and is not remembered as a good king. King Jam es III married a Boyd. Rivalry and animosity were at their peak when the insignificant King James, III married a descendant of the Boyds, thereby making him a cousin by marriage of the

Stewarts. Heretofore, the Boyds had always befriended King James; however, King James turned against his wife's people, the Boyds. This made it unsafe at this time to remain in Scotland. In 1612, because of the persecution, many Scottish people fled to Northern Ireland and from there came to America.

Before leaving Scotland and Ireland, the Boyds had distinguished themselves; Robert de Boyd, the third son of Sir Thomas Boyd was the ancestor of the Boyds of Portencross in Ayrshire, Scotland.

INTERESTING During the early l 700's due to the feuds between the

families, James Boyd, 15th Earl of Erroll (b.1726, d.1778) in 1759, changed his name to James HAY after losing the family status. From 1759 through 1941 his family kept the name Hay even though during those 182 years, they kept the Kilmarnock lands and their titles.

Gilbert Allan Rowland Hay, 6th Baron of Kilmarnock (b.1905, d.1975) assumed the Boyd family name in 1941 by warrant of Lord Lyon of Arms while his niece Diana succeeded to the Earldom of Erroll, Alistair Ivor Gilbert Boyd (b.11/5/1927) (no longer Hay) became ih Baron of Kilmarnock.

MORE information is available on the Scottish Boyds and much can be found on the internet.
