Mrs. Maly is a two-time HAEF grant recipient, and

this year used the funds to acquire Digi-block sets for

her math classes. “Digi-blocks have been especially

helpful to my second graders when teaching the

concept of regrouping. My students have a clear idea

of what actually happens when they have more than

ten ones with addition,” Mrs. Maly explained.

block is an intuitive, base-10 system comprising 100

blocks that nest into 10 sets, and pack away neatly

into one rectangular box. This provides students with

a hands-on manipulative to model the regrouping of

tens into ones during subtraction.

Fostering energy and engagement in the classroom,

students “love to work problems out with these

blocks,” Mrs. Maly said. “I am so grateful for the

100% Pure Holly Academy Maple Syrup Spring has officially started and the 7th grade science classes have begun the process of making maple syrup by tapping the Holly Academy Sugar Maple trees. Like March Madness, the groundhog seeing his shadow, and Daylight Savings Time; tree tapping is another great moment that signals the start of spring. The sap that is collected through March and April will be boiled down in a process known as sugaring. Maple syrup has always been a Michigan commodity. Our students are learning about the plant sciences, economics, and Michigan history related to this tasty product. If you would like to help the 7th graders by making a donation or volunteering time, please contact Ms. Carswell at carswellk@hollyacademy.
