THERE are many life lessons in this funny and inven- tive dramedy which takes you to the dark days. The film stars Eddie Murphy as loud-mouth Harlem petty thief Ray, while fellow come- dian, Martin Lawrence stars as his friend Claude. The pair run into trouble when a crooked officer hits them with a phony murder charge and are given life sen- tences and shipped off to jail, where they must think of a way to prove their innocence and avoid the brutal guards while battling their biggest enemies – their opposing personalities. Grey’s Anatomy M-Net (DStv 101 ) at 7.30pm THIS medical series which focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns became one of the most watched TV series of all time. The 11th season opened to 10.14 million viewers with a 3.1/11 Nielsen rating in the 18-49 demographic. With Season 11 being the first in Grey’s Anatomy history to be without Cristina Yang, TV.com wrote, “The question I had heading into Grey’s Anato- my’s Season 11 premiere was just how much Cristina’s absence would be felt. I think the show will be just fine.” The Affair M-Net Edge (DStv 102) 102 at 9pm THIS Golden Globe award- winning TV drama series explores the emotional/ psychological effects of two affairs. Young diner waitress Alison and her husband, rancher Cole, are struggling – personally and financially – in the wake of tragedy. Noah, a settled teacher and would-be novelist, is summering at his in-laws’ Hamptons estate with his wife, Helen, and four kids. When Noah meets Alison, they begin an affair. For her, he’s a welcome escape; for him, she’s a pretty distraction. But, they could end two marriages – one that’s a bit shaky, the other that was on solid ground. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest M-Net Movies Family (DStv 105) at 9.35pm WHILE this American fantasy film pales in com- parison to its predecessor, The Curse of the Black Pearl, it still provides two hours and 20 minutes of escapism that once again makes it a safe bet for guilt-free fun. When ghostly pirate Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) comes to collect a blood debt, Capt Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) must find a way to avoid his fate lest his soul be damned for all time. Nevertheless, the wily ghost manages to interrupt the wedding plans of Jack’s friends Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Me Myself and Irene M-Net Movies Romance (DStv 107) at 9.55pm THIS dirty, twisted and unrelenting comedy stars the hilarious Jim Carrey as Charlie Baileygates/ Hank Evans, the Rhode Island state trooper who, after years of continuously suppress- ing his rage and feelings, suffers a psychotic breakdown which results in a second personal- ity, Hank. The film had the biggest opening on the weekend of June 23, 2000 making $24.2m (R334m) in its opening weekend. Monster’s Ball AMC (DStv 140) at 11.10pm MONSTER’S Ball is the 2001 Ameri- can romantic drama film that won Halle Berry an Acad- emy Award for best actress in 2002 for her performance. Roger Ebert gave the film four stars and said: “The movie has the complexity of great fiction” listing it as the best film of 2001. It is a hard-hitting southern drama tempered by a story of a life-changing love. It is the story of Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), an embittered prison guard working on Death Row who begins an unlikely affair with Leticia (Halle Berry), the wife of a man he has just executed. Enough e.tv at 8.30pm YOU will never have enough of this 2002 American thriller starring Jennifer Lopez as a strong- willed working- class waitress Slim who finds her life trans- formed when she marries wealthy con- tractor Mitch (Billy Camp- bell). Anchored by a strong storyline the film provides life’s hard lessons and inspires other women to refuse to settle for less. Slim’s life seems idyllic until Mr Right turns into a monster when abusive behaviour forces her to go on the run, eluding an increasingly obsessive Mitch and his lethal henchman. The film is based on the 1998 novel Black and Blue, by Anna Quindlen. Great Expectations M-Net Movies Romance (DStv 107) at 4.10pm GREAT Expecta- tions is a 2012 British film adaptation of Charles Dickens novel of the same name. The film stars Jeremy Irvine, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Ralph Fiennes and Robbie Col- trane. While this adaptation has received a lot of criticism for not adding anything new to the meaty Dickens classic, the visual aspects of this classic deserve special mention as they enhance the viewing experience of what would have been an uneventful and dull film. It feels as if the cinematography and art direction are working to illustrate and expand on the writing. Unstoppable e.tv 8.30pm Life M-Net Movies Stars (DStv 111) at 8pm Shooter M-Net Movies Action+ (DStv106) at 8pm SHOOTER is a 2007 American conspiracy action thriller film about a top Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg), who leaves the military after a mis- sion goes wrong and disappears without a trace. Swagger is coaxed back into service after high- profile government officials convince him to help thwart a plot against the president of the US. For those who like it Raw LUXURY denim fash- ion brand G-Star Raw and Boiler Room have collab- orated on the Raw Sessions, a series of global events and short films that journey from London to Barcelona, Paris, and now to Johannesburg. Raw Sessions take under- ground alternative artists and capture fresh young directors in a live performance that cir- culates the globe, with each city hosting a live music broad- cast curated by Boiler Room. South Africa’s Boiler Room journey delves deeper into the edgy new-school sounds of Durban’s gqom movement, with Durban native and gqom godfather Okmalumkoolkat ever-so-effortlessly taking on the live broadcast in Newtown – Johannesburg’s alternative hub – on Wednesday. We sat down with Okmalum- koolkat to find out more about his musical repertoire and his involvement in the Raw Boiler Room sessions. How was the stage name Okmalumkoolkat con- ceived? It was influenced by my favour- ite Ukhozi FM DJ who had a show where toddlers would call the station to send shout outs to their friends and sing their favourite songs. I think it’s probably one of the coolest concepts for a radio show. I am sure he built a lot of characters’ esteems from that. I feel like I inspire the youth with my art too. What sets your sound apart? I listen to a variety of genres so I like to experiment. I think a lot of people living in 2015 like out-of-the-box music. I work with a lot of different producers and this helps me master my craft. Walk us through Dur- ban’s unique gqom sound. Gqom is Durban’s home- grown drum driven dance music that’s making waves globally because of its unpar- alleled unique vibe. Tell us a bit more about your involvement with G-Star Raw and their Boiler Room Raw ses- sions: The Boiler Room is crazy because it’s streamed on the internet in real time during your performance so people worldwide are able to virtually connect with us. G-Star Raw and I have a thriving work relationship. They once booked me to per- form for one of their collections in Johannesburg last year and we shot an interview at one of my shows in Amsterdam. They later called me up to contribute to their art exhibi- tion, How We Wear Ours.
