Substance Abuse Prevention Saves Lives and Money

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month. This observance focus-es on the role substance abuse prevention plays in promoting safe and healthy com-munities. Underage drinking, non-medical use of prescription drugs, and illicit druguse take a devastating toll on our families and in our communities.

There are substance abuse prevention strategies that have been demonstrated towork with youth. Such evidence-based programs and practices are essential tools toreduce substance use and help people lead healthier lives. According to The WhiteHouse Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) “2012 National DrugControl Strategy,” Each $1.00 invested in an evidence-based prevention programcan reduce costs related to substance use disorders by an average of $18.00.

There is an abundant need for continued substance abuse prevention inIllinois.*The most commonly abused drug among Illinois youth is alcohol, withmarijuana second, and tobacco third. While about one out of three Illinois 8thgraders report using alcohol in the past year, by the time they reach 12th grade, about two out of three report use in the past year.

As youth age, the likelihood of using marijuana increases such that about 13.4%of 8th graders report marijuana use but nearly 38.5% of 12th graders report usingmarijuana in the past year. Past 30-day cigarette use is reported by 4.6%, 8.8% and16.3% of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders respectively.

Similar patterns are reported for other forms of smoking tobacco (excluding cig-arettes) such that 16.1% of 12th graders report smoking tobacco other thancigarettes.

While we have a need for continued prevention in Illinois, there are positiveemerging trends in substance use. For example, past year use of any gateway sub-stance (i.e., alcohol, tobacco, inhalants) is declining among 8th graders.

Stopping substance abuse before it even begins can increase a person’s chancesat living a longer, healthier and more productive life.

Families, communities, and organizations can become involved in spreadingawareness and importance of substance abuse prevention in a number of free andeasy ways:

Host a substance-free party in October celebrating football season, Halloween, ora birthday.

Simply start a dialogue discussing your commitment to prevention substanceabuse. Starting this conversation is the first step toward change.

Families, coalitions and organizations can find facts to share via social media athttp://www.samhsa.gov/prevention/nationalpreventionmonth/.

*According to the 2012 Illinois Youth Survey - the Illinois Department of HumanServices (IDHS) has funded the administration of the Illinois Youth Survey (IYS)biennially since 1990. The IYS is a self-report survey administered in school set-tings and is designed to gather information about a variety of health and social indi-cators including substance use patterns and attitudes of Illinois youth.

CONSTRUCTIONMEMORARE

Remember, O most gra-cious Virgin Mary, thatnever was it known thatanyone who fled to thyprotection, implored thyhelp, or sought thine in-tercession was left un-aided. Inspired by thisconfidence, I fly untothee, O Virgin of virgins,my mother; to thee do Icome, before thee Istand, sinful and sorrow-ful. O Mother of the WordIncarnate, despise notmy petitions, but in thymercy hear and answerme. Amen.

Do you know two or more ways out of the house?

Have you picked a place to meet the rest of your family once you are all out of the house?

Once you are out of the house, stay out of the house.

Don’t touch matches, lighters or candles. They are for adult use only.

Firefighters rush to the rescue when there is a fire. Did you know that they also work hard to spread the word about fire prevention and safety?

Fire Safety! Spread the Word! In the days of horse-drawn fire carts, Dalmatiansdid the job of running in front of the horses to clear the path and to guide them to the fire! Today Dalmatians are mascots of firehouses. Sometimes we help to locate people in fires. We also make good guard dogs, watching over the firehouse and the equipment.
