INSTITUTE APPLICATION

2017

TMT

OUR 2017 INSTITUTE WILL INVOLVE STUDY, PRACTICAL WORK AND REFLECTION, AND INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

INTENSIVES – Fellows gather three times a year for structured weeklong workshops. These are led by Target Margin Artistic Director David Herskovits and other Associated Artists, and sometimes by Institute Fellows themselves. Intensives provide space and time for Fellows to collaboratively play / practice / test existing performance and theatrical frameworks, and are structured to prime Fellows to experiment in new and challenging forms.

FOCUSED EXPERIMENTATION – In the last quarter of the Institute we provide each Fellow with up to 20 hours of free studio / rehearsal space to engage in an artistic experiment. This work should extend the Fellow’s artistic practice in some way. It might test an idea; question a principle the Fellow becomes interested in; allow the Fellow to change their process or working approach; or challenge the Fellow’s assumptions about collaboration. It has no performance goal or production outcome. This process might result in an open showing, an invited rehearsal, a written report, or a private reflection.

ADVENTURES – Throughout the year, TMT organizes extracurricular experiences for Fellows to attend as a group; these can include intimate conversations with visionaries such as Richard Foreman, visiting the Library for Performing Arts’ Archive of Recorded Sound, invitations to dress rehearsals at the Met Opera, attending mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, riding the Seaglass Carousel in Battery Park or taking the tram to Roosevelt Island. Fellows will have opportunities to propose and lead adventures for the group should they choose to do so.

BREAKFASTS – Fellows and TMT Artistic Staff have breakfast together one morning each month; this is an opportunity for informal sharing, conversation, and reflection. We ask that all Fellows commit to attending as many breakfasts as possible.

STIPENDS – Each Fellow receives a $1,000 stipend to support their artistic practice during the Institute.

SPACE – Fellows are welcome to make use of TMT’s office space, and may also reserve rehearsal space through TMT at a discounted rate. Space is subject to scheduling and availability.

WHAT IS THE INSTITUTEThe Institute is a year-long fellowship (January – December) that harnesses Target Margin Theater’s history of nurturing emerging talent, providing a $1,000 stipend, support and space for five diverse artists to challenge themselves and their art-making practices. It is a place for open-ended questioning and experimentation within, and at, the edges of the form of theater.

THE INSTITUTE IS NOT A PROJECT DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY, NOR IS IT A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICE. THERE IS NO CURRICULUM OR “TEACHING” STRUCTURE.

There is no final result or project. The Institute values form-breaking work, artistic originality and process over production. The core goal is rigorously to question our own assumptions about what the theater is, what it could be, and what we would like it to be. We approach our enquiry from our roots as a theater company, but embrace all possible forms of time-bounded performance or audience-facing creativity.

WE DEMAND ONLY THAT FELLOWS PUSH THESE PRINCIPLESAND CHALLENGE THEMSELVES CONTINUOUSLY.

TMT

WHO SHOULD APPLYWe are looking for five artists who have demonstrated a serious commitment to making theater and an interest in TMT’s principles. Fellows should be poised to embrace the open-ended questioning that guides the Institute.

Applicants may emerge from any theatrical discipline (actors, designers, writers, directors, producers, stage managers, administrators, etc.). We will also accept applications from other artistic fields (music, visual art, literature, etc.) as long as the connection to theater / performance is clearly articulated.

APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE SUBSTANTIAL PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE OR AN ADVANCED DEGREE.

The Institute is a substantial time commitment and given the Institute’s unstructured nature, Fellows must be energetic and motivated to initiate and shape their work. The Institute is for artists who have already established a serious professional practice and are now looking to extend, disrupt, and transform it.

WHAT IS THE TIMELINE

WE ARE ACCEPTING 2017 INSTITUTE APPLICATIONS FROM OCTOBER 1 – OCTOBER 31, 2016. We will then review applications and conduct interviews, with the aim of choosing our Fellows by December 15, 2016.

OUR FIRST INSTITUTE BREAKFAST IS SET FOR JAN 11, 2017. Following Breakfasts are the first Wednesday of every month.

OUR FIRST INTENSIVE WILL TAKE PLACE FEB 6 - 10, 2017. All Intensives are mandatory and if you cannot attend these dates we advise you to apply in a later year. The remaining two Intensive weeks (in summer and fall) will be scheduled in consultation with the five Fellows.

FOCUSED EXPERIMENTS COMMENCE IN LATE FALL 2017. Exact dates will be scheduled in consultation with the five Fellows, however if you are already aware that you have extensive conflicts in Fall 2017 we recommend that you apply in a later year.

ADVENTURES ARE CONTINUOUS. AS THEY SHOULD BE.

ABOUT TMTTarget Margin Theater was founded in 1991 by Artistic Director David Herskovits

on the principle that works of art return us to real truths more powerfully by

their divergence from a strict illustration of reality. We continuously strive to

expand the concept of what can take place in a theater, creating aggressively

reimagined versions of classic texts and new plays inspired by existing sources.

‘Difference’ is the generative principle of everything we do at TMT, from the

work we develop to our office structure. From our inception we have also

sought ‘difference’ in our company makeup, and our practice of age-, gender-,

and racially-diverse casting is one of our most identifiable trademarks.
