CLASS PLACEMENT Dear Parents, It is about this time each year that the ELC Staff and Junior School staff generate the class lists for the following year. It is a task that is taken very seriously and we endeavour to meet the needs of each boy and to get the balance and 'chemistry' of each class group right. Class teachers, specialist teachers and myself are all involved with this task. Basically our policy is that in order to achieve the best all round outcomes for each and every child it is we within the school system who must make such decisions. Should parents be encouraged to choose their child's teacher and or class mates then both number and composition of subsequent classes would be unevenly spread and badly skewed creating unnecessary problems both of an educational and social nature. Often requests that parents make are based on their perception of teachers or children rather than informed knowledge. Please also remember that some friendships can be counterproductive in the classrooms and friendships change. Teachers always take into account a number of factors when deciding class placement such as; academic achievement, an even spread of social adjustment difficulties, teacher match and past experiences and the information concerning new children as that also alters class dynamics. However, if you have a genuine educational concern then I would be more than happy to receive in writing a letter outlining these concerns by Friday 17 November. These concerns will be taken into consideration when final placements are decided. Please note the class lists will be read out and sent home on Monday 3 December. The class lists are then set and are not negotiable unless there has been a serious oversight. Thank you for your co-operation. The Kindergarten boys visited Mures Restaurant last week as part of their unit on The Sea. They were able to see the fishing boat Kiella, watch the fish being processed for the restaurant and were treated to a delicious fish and chip meal. Thank you Mr Mure and staff for having us.

"Mr Mure is showing us a fish that he caught. The men cut up the fish for the restaurant."

NW On Wednesday 24 October the Preps, Year Ones ' • • and Year Twos went to the Royal Hobart Show.

' • We had lots of Mums and Dads to take us around the Show and we saw many interesting things. We learned lots about farm animals and farm

. . activities. Preps wrote about the day.

I saw piglets. They were cute. The mother was with them. They were pink with twirly tails. Harrison Woo

I liked it when I collected wool from the cows and I stepped in cow poo. Callan Denis

I made an aeroplane. I went fishing. I caught two fish. I saw dogs. I liked the camels. Ryan Neal

Year One

Year One have been learning about bushrangers. Here are some excellent art works and information by Richard Giblin and Lachlan Smith.

My picture is of Ned Kelly. The four members of his gang were Ned, Dan, Jo Byrne and Steve Hart. Ned was hanged in 1880.

Year Two

A tornado here, a hurricane there, several earthquakes and volcanic eruptions... Year 2HS are busy researching, discussing, drawing and reconstructing natural disasters. Our papier-mâché volcanoes are almost complete, we've twisted twisters and watched videos of crazy volcanologists getting FAR too close to lava flows. The class tadpoles have been watching us with interest and we've been watching them grow. The big night is almost here - Year 2HS and Year 2S sleepover. We all look forward to ghost stories, camp fires, torch games, dancing, singing and roasted marshmallows. Lets hope those teachers all survive the night!!

Middle Reaches—Friday 19 October

Yesterday we walked from Strickland Falls to the Cascade Brewery. Some of the signs of human presence were dog poo, bottles, bike tracks, cut down logs, willow trees, roads and gates. When we came I noticed there were no ferns and it was more open. We could hear the Rivulet but could not see it until we got down to the brewery. It was running fast.

Women's Prison

Yesterday 4C and 4K went on an excursion to The Women's Prison and fudge factory. Nearly every one bought fudge because it's so nice. I bought two bags of off-cuts. They were $3.30 each. Before it was a Women's Prison it was a Rum Factory. There used to be one but another sixteen Rum Factories opened so it didn't get enough business and Governor Macquarie bought it. Some of the jobs the ladies had to do were washing, net mending and cooking. Also some of the food was broth, sheep's heads at the best, vegies, bread, water. They also only had two changes of clothes a week.

Elected Year 6 candidates outside Parliament House on Friday 19 October.

On Monday the 29th the Year 6 boys went to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club to see Stuart Wells. He talked to us about the Laser. Stuart explained what the ropes were called and how they worked. He then let some of the boys sit in the boat and have a go at hanging out the sides. After he talked to us, we went and had a look at the other classes of yachts. Stuart then did a quick demo. It looked very hard to tack. We all learned a lot from listening to Stuart.

Leadership Day

On Tuesday 29 October the JS Leaders from private schools across Tasmania went up to Woodfield Lodge at Dysart to participate in a variety of leadership activities. The schools that took part were Hutchins, Collegiate, Fahan, Dominic, St Virgil's, Launceston Grammar, Scotch Oakburn and St Mary's. We split up into groups. The names of those groups were well known leaders, such as Churchill, Mother Theresa, Thorpe, Ghandi, Hollows and Freeman.

We then went around different activities consisting of: drama and philosophy, bush skiing, bushwalking, treasure hunting, group co-operation and many more fun activities. We also listened to an interesting talk by 'Mitch.'

We all agreed that we had a very rewarding and productive time. We would like to thank Miss Brewster and other teachers for making the day possible.
