President’s MessageBy Linda Quince

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

With the holidays behind us we look forward to the new year. As we continue to strive to improve the appearance of the park, it is important that residents inspect their homes and property to see what needs to be spruced up. With home sales up and many people looking to join the community, please help to keep the park looking clean and inviting. We get a lot of complements on how great our community looks, and we thank everyone for their time and work to keep homes looking well-kept.

The most common complaint in our community continues to be speeding. This issue has been discussed at most Town Hall Meetings and addressed in the monthly Forecaster. Residents, guests, visitors and delivery vehicles have all been spotted driving too fast. It seems people are in such a rush they just don’t care to follow the 15 MPH rule in our community. To address this concern, we will be installing temporary speed bumps in the hope that this will get people’s attention and improve this important safety issue.

As we start the New Year, please be kind and respectful to all. A smile, nod, and even a wave can go a long way in showing that we care for one another. We can agree to disagree and continue to be friends!

I want to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!

ACA NewsBy Ron Miller

Well, here it is 2020, and boy did the year go fast. I hope everyone had great Holidays. I know I did. My two-years term is about up and it hasn’t been as bad as everyone made it out to be.

• ACA’s first meeting and luncheon is January 8th with the club presidents meeting on the 7th at 10:00 a.m.

• We, The Cove, were able to send 60 wreaths to Bay Pines Cemetery thanks to the many clubs and our Canadian friends.

• I’m looking forward to the Hands Across Border dinner, it’s always a good time.• The Burger burn in January is on the 21st at the same time, 4:30-6:00 p.m.• Karaoke is on January18th at 7:00 -10:30 p.m., come join in on the fun.

I hope everyone who was in attendance of the New Year’s Eve party had a wonderful time. A big thank you goes out to Sandy Shouse for her help. She always helps out with most everything.

All meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month through April, and there is only a $5 membership fee to join. This includes lunch! We hope to see you there!

Don’t forget to SAVE THE DATE for the Valentine Dinner Dance being held on February 15th. Delicious food, music and fun! Information will be provided soon on the time, tickets etc.

PrayerBy Lainey Nelson

Heavenly Father, we give you thanks for yet another year. We have so many blessings – more than we can count.

We pray for our country, that the turmoil that exists will cease. We pray for the homeless, the jobless, those that are ill, and all who suffer with constant pain. We are not alone in this world-so we pray for other people worldwide who need care. We especially pray for our military and their families, so often separated by deployment.

Lord, our world is weary from storms, floods, fire, and war. We ask your blessing on us all.

Amen

AnnouncementsRay Rodriguez is the new Forecaster Editor.By Bart Beal

I am very pleased to announce that Ray Rodriguez is taking over as editor beginning with the February issue. Ray and his wife recently moved into their new home here in the Cove and immediately got

involved. I couldn’t be more confident in passing this role on to Ray. He has many years of marketing, publication and editing experience, and I know he will take the Forecaster to the “next level.”

Thank you, Ray!

Giving ThanksBy Ray Rodriguez

Thank you to all that attended our Thanksgiving dinner hosted by Toni and Jeff Jones. We also extend our thanks to all the volunteers who helped in serving and setting up

the club house for this successful event.

Guest were served a traditional Turkey dinner with all the fixings along with dessert. All the food served was deliciously homemade and plentiful.

Twelve turkeys were prepared to serve over 150 of our ACA family members in attendance. Serving a group this size was no easy task and without the experience of Toni Jones operating a restaurant of her own, this may not have been so successful. In addition to feeding those in attendance, carryout dinners were prepared for those who are home bound. And on top of all that, Toni and her staff of volunteers baked 30+ loaves of bread that sold out at $2 a loaf. Thanks again to all that made this event possible.

How to get an invite for the 90’s dinnerBy Nancy Hubartt and Mary Bickhart

F or your information and contrary to what you might think, the office does not provide me the information on your birthday or wedding anniversary. I depend on you to telling me. Please call me (Nancy) at 525-0571.

The criteria for the 90’s party are as follows:

1. You must be 90 years old by or before the day of the party. The day of the party is usually the last Saturday of February.

2. You must live in the Park full-time or seasonal, and either alone or with family.3. You must notify the Sunshine Lady, Nancy Hubartt, so that you can receive an invitation.4. We cannot make exceptions for age or residence, no matter how much we would like to

relent.

It is a fun birthday party for the people who are 90 or older to celebrate with family and friends!

SWIM EXERCISE

Hi everyone! My name is Nancy Olson and I am excited to be a part of this team! I lead the swim exercise group.

We meet Monday through Saturday from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Our class is audio led and we do a different tape every day. On Tuesday and Thursday from 10:15-10:30 a.m. we also do a noodle workout to a variety of music. There is no need to worry about doing every move perfect. Our goal is to have fun and just keep moving! We meet year round for swim exercise. Noodle workout meets from October through April. There are so many benefits to water exercise: a healthy heart, cardiovascular strength, muscles toning, hip and knee conditioning, increased balance, and it burns calories.

Our group Facebook page is: ”Americana Cove Water Fitness Group”.

My name is Judy Daigle and I am so excited to be a part of the Fitness team! I offer line dancing lessons every Monday from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. Beginners are welcomed at any time during the year since new dances are always being introduced.

We review the steps to dances that were taught weekly, so you can join in at any time. We meet from November through May.

Dancing simulates the mind and offers great heart-healthy benefits of exercise while having fun! Our group Facebook name is: “Americana Cove Line Dancers”.

LAND EXERCISE

Hi. My name is Daisy Dean. I am also excited to be a part of the Fitness team! I lead the land exercise. Monday through Friday we do a 20-minute toning class at the clubhouse starting at 7:45 a.m. This is a video by Lucy Wyndham Reed. At 8:15 a.m. we do a

3-mile workout by Leslie Sanstone. On Tuesday we use stretch bands and on Friday we use weights. We usually hold class on Saturday. These classes are for both men and women, and we meet year round. They are fun and free, and we love to see new faces. Exercise is important for physical fitness because it provides strength for our muscles, heart, lungs and mind, just to name a few. Our group Facebook page name is: “Americana Cove Walkers”.

Left to right are Nancy Olson (Swim Exercise), Judy Daigle (Line Dancing), and Daisy Dean (Land Exercise)

Something to ConsiderBy Bart Beal

Does the spirit of Christmas only exist during the Christmas season?

The Christmas season can be a wonderful time of family and friend gatherings, festive events, delicious food, gift giving, remembrance, and worship. Bonnie and I are always excited to go north to see family. There is a special feeling of warmth, love and fondness. Christmas cheer is in the air. But the Christmas spirit is much more than that for those of the Christian faith. It is the celebration and ongoing practice of faith in a Savior born over 2,000 years ago not only on December 25th, but every day of the year.

The incarnate birth of the Messiah (God with us), Jesus Christ, and that He lived with us, died for the forgiveness of our sins, gave us the promise of eternal life, and that He lives for us today, is the foundation of the Christian’s faith. This is what the Christian remembers, is grateful for, and lives for not only during Christmas, but every day. He rests in knowing that he will ultimately be with God forever. How can this not give him peace in the midst of living in this fallen world with all of its problems, pain, sadness and death? His perspective changes when he knows that this world is temporary and heaven is eternal. And the wonderful thing is, it’s a gift available to everyone.

Do you remember the words of the children’s song, “red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight?” They’re true. He loves all people and wants all people to know Him. That includes me, you, and everybody else in the world.

Boat ClubBy MaryAnn Meljac

T he Boat Club would like to wish everyone a New Year filled with happiness and good fortune! We hope that all residents enjoyed the 3rd Annual Christmas Boat Parade on December 8th as much

as our boat owners enjoyed decorating and lighting up their vessels for the community’s enjoyment! Club members also gathered for our Christmas Tiki Hut Party and had great fun with a White Elephant Gift Exchange.

Don’t forget to join us on January 11th for our monthly meeting at 10:00 a.m. in the Clubhouse. Our new board would like to welcome all returning club members and extend an invitation to any resident interested in joining. You do not have to own a boat to join the club and membership is only $10 for the year!

Preparation and planning for the 2020 Island Bash is underway. This gala event is scheduled for March 14th. Putting on an event of this size takes teamwork from all members. There is always something for everyone to do. Please join us and share your talents.

Crafters ClubBy Marge Shearer

The Crafters Club is busy planning for several events in January. On January 13th the Crafters will gather baby items for Mary’s Outreach. This organization accepts donations of any baby items. If you’d like to bring diapers, blankets, bottles, sleepers, etc. to the

On January 27th we will have Tasters Night. Everyone is invited to come to the clubhouse at 6:00 p.m. and enjoy food samplings for a donation. If you’d like to make a food sample to be shared, please contact Debbie Lewison at 217-741-9326 or e-mail her at [email protected].

BuddhismBy John Howell

A 2020 “Dharma Vision”…new year, new decade…time to reflect with clarity.

The Buddha, known as the “great physician”, like a good doctor diagnosed the “patient” and then prescribed the cure. Nevertheless, the Bud-dha’s Dharma is best taken in stages, for the innate proclivity of each student. Thus, the myriad of books, teachings, and teachers. From (the Buddhist P.O.V.) all sentient be-ings have been “conditioned” since beginningless time by 3 basic “propelling forces” of self-cre-ated Karma; (i.e. ill-will, greed, and ignorance). Since most were indoctrinated into one of three “desert religions”; Dispelling Some Common Misconceptions About Buddhism is respectfully offered:

• Myth: Buddhism is anti-theistic• Fact: Buddhist do not objectify theism with conceptual label narratives. Instead a

“transcendent approach” is utilized. In fact, Buddhist cosmology describes many “levels of existence” populated by an infinite number of beings; “All” of which are trapped in a perceptual state of rebirth, over vast inconceivable epochs of space-time.

• Myth: Buddhism is overly pessimistic.• Fact: Buddhist (through insightful meditative practices leading to experiential Wisdom)

obtain a bliss beyond “naive” bliss, promising Nirvana in this very life; thus, permanently escaping (at death) the above mentioned dualistic perils of “externalism/nihilism”. This is the Middle Way.

• Myth: Buddhist images are to be worshiped.• Fact: Buddhist statues/temples/icons etc. are for “recollection” of the Dharma and are to

be emulated, not deified, assigned martyrdom, or superstitious blind faith.• Myth: Anyone can “teach” Buddhism.• Fact: It is best that authentic linage holders “Turn the Wheel of Dharma” for the sake of

continuing the genuine intent of the Buddha’s 2600 y.o. practice. • Myth: There is an “easy” short cut to Nirvana.• Fact: For some (with meritorious past life Karma), “skillful expeditious means”; (Tantra)

may be apposite. However, “Mindfulness Practices” work best for most.• Myth: Buddhist are attempting to convert people.• Fact: Buddhism is different from almost every other religious/tradition… Buddhist do

not proselytize. They only offer teachings for exploration/discovery/practice, when the student is ready. In fact, Buddhism is praised for not having pious bigoted views about anyone, and has reframed from condoning bullies/violence/endless holy wars, etc. The Buddha wisely advised; do no harm, make good Karma, practice Metta (loving kindness).

• Myth: Buddhism doesn’t have a “savior personage” per say.• Fact: From the Buddhist prospective You are responsible for your own Karma You can

“save yourself” by conscientiously “walking” the 8-fold Path, gaining direct insight into The Four Noble Truths. Lamas/Guru’s/teachers etc., can only point out the way to the goal of complete liberation - Nirvana… (True Peace)

Join us at 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays (game room) for a relaxing Meditation session and more… Reminder: Sacred Sand Mandala at FL. CraftArt 1- (7-12) Happy New Year to All!

Helping Hands – Taking Care of Your FeetBy Judy Hall, PhD

Often, people take care of their bodies, face, and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies and one deserving of our attention. After all, without our feet, we would not be able to perform

most daily tasks. As we get older, here are some ways to take good care of our feet:1. Exercise: Get out there and use those feet!2. Regular Checks: Pay attention to any changes in your feet.3. Balance Training not only keeps you upright, but it helps your feet also.4. Supportive Shoes are the best purchases to keep between your feet and the ground!5. Massage your feet and moisturize them daily.6. Wash and dry your feet thoroughly.7. Trim your toenails or have them trimmed regularly. Come and meet our podiatrist for good

information about keeping those feet in good shape.8. Wear clean socks and change them daily.

Heads up for all our Cove residents: Helping Hands will be featuring a podiatrist during January to give us important information about keeping our feet healthy and happy! And on February 1st, Helping Hands will be presenting its annual fundraiser: a night of beautiful music performed by voice students from Gibbs High School. Don’t miss either of these events!

Live MusicBy Libby Hopkins

Hello Everybody! We hope your Christmas and New Year’s holidays were splendid! Many of you attended the eleventh Annual Evening of Christmas Carols and Live Nativity in December, and a heartfelt thanks goes out to each and every one of you for

your patronage. At this time, we also want to thank the 50 plus people who were involved in the program. It takes a tremendous amount of work to put together such a show and we are very grateful for all your efforts. We know both audience and participants had a great time!

We have two shows this month. Both musical programs are in the Clubhouse. You will not want to miss either one!

Tues. January 7, 2020 – 3:00 PM -- The Roaring Twenties

Tues. January 21, 2020 – 3:00 PM -- The Rat Pack

Please join us. We look forward to seeing you! Refreshments and drinks will be served.

Please note that our Shows and Refreshments are FREE! So, come and enjoy yourselves! Friends and guests are welcome.

For those of you who are not familiar with us, we are a music group within the park that usually put on a performance the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Clubhouse. We work hard to provide an entertaining and fun hour, and we provide snacks, drinks, and sometimes, spiked punch! Please come to see us! Take care, and have a great month!

Shuffleboard ClubBy Greg Moe

We hope everyone had a happy holiday season and a safe return to the Cove.

Our NOVA League will be having their first matches of the season on January 2nd. We have enough players to field 2 teams. That being said, there will be home matches every Thursday until the end of the shuffling season, March 5th. All games begin at noon. Please come out and watch them.

After a two-week holiday break, Friendship and Blue Sky Leagues will resume on January 7th and January 3rd respectfully. Please note that our Social (handicap) League is now meeting on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. This is a great way to get in some extra practice. Hoss Collar remains on Sundays at 1:00 p.m.

AMERICANA COVE FORECASTER JANUARY, 2020 D30

Mark down on your calendars January 18th for the Shuffleboard Club’s first of two Pancake Breakfasts this year. The price is $4.00 each and $2.00 for children under 12 for all the pancakes you can eat, 3 sausage links, orange juice, and coffee. It is from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Clubhouse.

The Shuffleboard Club holds a monthly meeting the first Wednesday of the month in the Atrium at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

We are trying to open some space in the shed by the courts. There are many locks that appear to have no owners. Please contact Greg Moe at 603-898-4614 prior to January 15th if you own a lock. Otherwise, the locks will be cut off. We need to make space for new members as our Leagues are growing. Thanks.

Swim ExerciseBy Nancy Olson

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone! Welcome back to our northern friends who are arriving for the

season or returning from the holidays! It’s great to see all the new faces in the park and at class. Welcome to all! We continue to have great attendance at both water exercise class and water noodle workouts. One day in November we had 38 in class, and 19 stayed for noodle workout! We did have earlier than usual colder air temperatures in both November and December. With that said, here are some items of interest:

• Weather temperature guideline: air temperature 55 or higher when I lead class and 60 or higher when subs lead class. I follow ACCU weather guidelines. If it is close, we will call the class around 9:15. Be sure to check our Facebook page “Americana Cove Water Fitness Group” on questionable days.

• The water temperature was set at 85 on November 1st and has been very comfortable! It will stay this temperature until May 1st.

• The group will have class on New Year’s Day, and as in the past, Maureen, Terry, Diane and I will be having our annual New Year’s toast to all of the class with mimosas, OJ and fruit after class! Celebrating all of us to a happy, healthy New Year!

• Many, many thanks to Maureen, Terry and Diane for subbing while I was away in late December celebrating Christmas with my family!

• Finally, thank you to Bart Beal who has served as the editor for the Forecaster. He has done a tremendous job of putting all our articles together and making the Forecaster a great read! Good luck to Bart as he moves on! And welcome and thanks to Ray Rodriquez for assuming Bart’s role. We are forever thankful to Ray for doing this and keeping the Forecaster going!

VespersBy Martha Sutton

May everyone have a blessed 2020! Here we are in a new year and all is well at Vespers. We have had some wonderful pastors bringing such positive messages.

Nancy Hill has been doing a great job scheduling our speakers.

The choir has been fluctuating in size, but we continue to sing our praises to our awesome God. We are always looking for more voices to sing those praises, so if you are interested, please join us Friday morning at rehearsals in the Atrium at 8:45 for an hour.

Florida to see more home sales due to BoomersBy Barefoot Realty Group, Brokerage Agent for Americana Cove

The 60 and older generation called “Baby Boomers” owns one third of the homes in the U.S., according to the Florida Realtors Association. How will this aging population of 76 million affect housing? The association notes that a “Silver Tsunami” of sellers

will grow over the next 20 years with many more homes coming on the market in the 2020s and 2030s.

Between 2007 and 2017, approximately 730,000 homes were sold by seniors aged 60 or older. From 2017 to 2027 that number is expected to rise to 920,000 homes, while in 2027 to 2030s, the number of homes sold by seniors is predicted to increase to 1.17 million.

Florida and Arizona, which are states that have large elder populations, will see the most homes for sale by seniors. With 20 million homes hitting the market through 2030s nationwide, the association notes that these homes will boost supply and could assist with alleviating today’s housing shortage.

Honesty

As the pastor fi nished his sermon he said, “For next Sunday, I want all of you to read Mark chapter 17. It’s going to tie in with the theme of my sermon.”

The next week as the pastor stood before the congregation, he said, “Let me see a show of hands for those of you who reviewed the suggested reading of Mark chapter 17?”

Every member of the congregation raised a hand.

“Well, amen, brothers and sisters,” the pastor responded. “Now I want you to pull out your Bibles and turn to Mark 17. I’ll wait.”

The sound of ruffl ing pages began to fi ll the sanctuary. Members of the congregation whispered amongst themselves.

“What’s that? You can’t fi nd the passage?” the pastor asked. “That’s because Mark 17 doesn’t exist, and that brings me to the topic of today’s sermon—dishonesty!”

Leaving money to charity? Consider this advice

Many people leave money to charities in their will. It’s a good way to support good people and a good cause, but you should be careful when making your choice. The

Good Housekeeping website has this advice:

• Plan with care. Think about everyone you want to leave your money to. If you donate to a charity, will there be enough money left for your children and other people you want to ben-efi t? Talk to your family so everyone knows what’s going on, but remember that this is your decision.

• Choose the right charity. Think about groups that have helped you, that you’ve volunteered for, and that you respect and admire. When you’ve settled on one or two, contact them and ask some questions, or visit a local offi ce if possible. Make sure the charity is legitimate and will use your money the way you want.

• Talk to a fi nancial counselor. Discuss the ins and outs of inheritance tax law so your money will be distributed without leaving anyone with a sizable tax bill.

• Update your will. Explain to your lawyer what you want to do. He or she will guide you through the process of amending your will so your money will go where you want it to go.
