SERGE PREPETIT

By Jon Berit

Pierre Serge Prepetit is from Haiti in theWest Indies and, l ike many people fromoutside the U.S., started plqying soccerat an early age. Soccer is his first love.ln addition to playing for Acton United

during the summer and for Raytheonuring the spring and fall, he coaches a

women's team in Chelmsford.

Serge took up running in 1987 andbegan serious marathon training in1989. He owes i t a l l to GBTC'erMichelle Greer who often ran with himprior to moving to California this springand who convinced him of the benefitsof joining the club. Since his first effortin 1989, Serge has run 5 marathons. His best t ime was a 3:20 in the 1990San Diego Marathon.

Serge's marathon efforts have not beenwithout pain. Until his most recentmarathon, San Fransisco in July, hewas not able to run the full distancewithout experiencing severe calfcramps. On one occassion whi lerunning over the last 20 miles of theBoston course with Greer, Sue Beltranand other friends, he had to stop justshort of 18 miles because of thecramps. But he refuses to give up.Ultimately, he would l ike to run Bostonwith as an of f ic ia l entrant.

Prior to joining the club, Serge had noreal interest in racing on the track; hedidn' t th ink i t very exci t ing, howeverhis association with the GBTC hasincreased his knowledge andappreciation of this segment of oursport . In July, he ran with GBTCtrackies at a meet, covering 3OOOmeters in 11 :08.7 and 800 meters in2 :19 .6 . He does no t ru le ou t fu tu retrack appearances.
