" T h e M e s s i a h " ; Oratorio for Solo Voices , Chorus and Orchestra
Handel [George Frederick] Born in Halle, February 23, 1685 Died in London, Apri l 14, 1759
"The Messiah" is without doubt the most representative of al l works of its class. Not in opera, in symphony or in any form of music does one work stand up head and shoulders above its fellows as does this. The work contains many gems of both solo and choral music. O w i n g to the length of the composition, i t has become tradit ional to omit certain numbers that have not the appeal and attractiveness of other portions of this great classic. These tradit ional omissions have resulted in a more compact and connected composition, and the work is being presented today in accordance w i t h the traditions handed down for many years. • .
P A R T T H E F I R S T O V E R T U R E R E C I T . Accompanied (Tenor) V i r g i l Day.
Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry unto her, that her war fare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned.
The voice of h im that crieth in the w i l d e r ness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord , make straight in the desert a highway for our God. A I R (Tenor) V i r g i l Day.
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and h i l l made l o w ; the crooked straight, and the rough places plain. CHORUS
• A n d the glory of the L o r d shall be revealed, and a l l flesh shall see i t together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken i t . R E C I T . Accompanied (Bass) Gene Cusick.
Thus saith the L o r d of Hosts: Yet once a l itt le whi le and I w i l l shake the heavens, and the earth, the sea, and the dry l a n d ; and I w i l l shake al l nations, and the desire of all nations shall come.
The Lord , whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to His temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight i n ; Behold, He shall come, saith the L o r d of Hosts. A I R (Bass) Gene Cusick.
But who may abide the day of His coming, and who shall stand when He appeare d ?
For He is like a refiner's f i r e . R E C I T . (Contralto) M a r y A r n o l d .
Behold, a v i r g i n shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call his name E m m a n u e l , God w i t h us. A I R (Contralto) M a r y A r n o l d .
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion, get thee up into the high mountains; O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem, l i f t up thy voice w i t h strength; l i f t i t up, be not a f r a i d ; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God !
Arise, shine, for thy l ight is come, and the glory of the L o r d is risen upon thee. R E C I T . Accompanied (Bass) Richard
Meyer.
For, behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the L o r d shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee, and the Gentiles shall come to thy l ight, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. A I R (Bass) Richard Meyer.
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great l i g h t ; and they that dwel l in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the l ight shined. CHORUS
For unto us a Chi ld is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonder fu l , Counsellor, the M i g h t y God, the Everlast ing Father, the Prince of Peace. P A S T O R A L S Y M P H O N Y R E C I T . (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis. There were shepherds abiding in the f ield, keeping watch over their flocks by night. R E C I T . (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis.
A n d Io ! the angel of the L o r d came upon them and the Glory of the L o r d shown round about them and Jhev were sore a f ra id . R E C I T . (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not ; for, behold, I br ing you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to al l people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of D a v i d a Saviour which is Christ the Lord . R E C I T . Accompanied (Soprano) Lorraine
Lee Francis. A n d suddenly there was w i t h the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying: CHORUS
Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good w i l l towards men. P A R T T H E SECOND A I R (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Z i o n ; Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy king cometh unto thee.
He is the righteous Saviour, and Fie shall speak peace unto the heathen. R E C I T . (Contralto) Lyd ia Marks .
T h e n shall the eyes of the bl ind be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then
P R O G R A M N O T E S - C o ntinu e a
shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing. A I R (Contralto) Lydia Marks .
He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs w i t h His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are w i t h young. A I R (Soprano) Doris Ogden Roth.
Come unto H i m , al l ye that labour and are heavy laden, and He shall give you rest.
Take His yoke upon you, and learn of H i m ; for He is meek and lowly of heart : and ye shall f i n d rest unto your souls. CHORUS
Behold the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the w o r l d . A I R (Contralto) Lydia Marks .
He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted w i t h grief . CHORUS
Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; He was wounded for our transgression; He was bruised for our i n iquit ies ; the chastisement of our peace was upon H i m . A I R (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis.
How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and b r i n g glad tidings of good things.
A I R (Bass) Gene Cusick. W h y do the nations so furiously rage to
gether? (and) why do the people imagine a va in thing?
The kings of the earth rise up, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord, and against his anointed. CHORUS
L i f t up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye l i f t up, ye everlasting doors; and the K i n g of glory shall come i n .
W h o is the K i n g of glory? The L o r d strong and mighty, the L o r d mighty in battle.
L i f t up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye l i f t up, ye everlasting doors; and the K i n g of glory shall come i n .
W h o is the K i n g of glory? The L o r d of Hosts, He is the K i n g of glory. A I R (Soprano) Lorraine Lee Francis.
I know that my Redeemer l iveth , and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth :
A n d though worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.
For now is Christ risen f rom the dead, the f i r s t - f ru i ts of them that sleep. R E C I T . Accompanied (Bass) Gene Cusick.
Behold, I tell you a mystery: W e shall not al l sleep; but we shall al l be changed in

the Season's Greetings. May this New Year be both happy

W o r t h y is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
