    Activity 1: Dangerous goods identification

Arrange with your trainer to tour the storage area where dangerous goods are

held. Use this opportunity to practice identifying dangerous goods labels.Record what dangerous goods you handle in the space below. Do this activitythree times over about a month, as this will give you a picture of what sort ofdangerous goods are most frequently transported in your workplace.

Discuss with your trainer, supervisor and fellow team members the main risksassociated with each of these types of dangerous goods (e.g. smoking orhaving a naked flame around flammable liquids such as solvents). Recordyour responses in the space below (one example has been done for you as aguide):

    Typeofgoods Class Risks

You should also find out what you should do if any of theserequirements are not met in the documentation. Options mightinclude:

    amending the documentation yourself

reporting the matter to other personnel in the workplace

    making a written report

contacting the company that supplied the goods

    a combination of these actions.

The information in Table 7.1, Chapter 7, Dangerous Goods Code,Volume 1, 6th edition provides exceptions to these guiding notesand this should be used to both guide your learning and todetermine required marking of dangerous goods. Workplaceprocedures should be built on the Code and cover the situationsyou will come across in your workplace. If in doubt, check with yourtrainer.

The documentation may be electronically transmitted to the driverof the vehicle but a hard copy (paper-based copy) must be carriedin the vehicle.

This is placed in an emergency information holder on the inside ofa door of the cabin or if the vehicle design does not allow this, in a

position close to the door, easily accessible and clearly visible. Thisinformation provides a guide for what to do in the event of a vehiclefire.

    Activity 2: Checking documentation

Talk to your supervisor, trainer and OHS representatives in the workplace.

Locate any workplace procedures that cover these situations described in thequestions below and record your responses in the space below:

what are you required to do if documentation of packageddangerous goods is incorrect in some way (information is notaccurate), incomplete or does not match with requirements?

what are you required to do if when checking thedocumentation of packaged dangerous goods you identify adiscrepancy between the load and the documentation (wheregoods may have gone missing)?

If you cannot locate procedures to cover these situations, ask yoursupervisor, trainer and OHS representatives, what you would be

expected to do in these situations and record this information. TheDangerous Goods Code can be useful to assist you in this task.Suggest to your trainer that this material gets written intoprocedures or SOPs for your workplace.

What sorts of segregation devices or methods are used inyour workplace for these goods?

How is information made available to relevant team membersabout compatibility and segregation?

What are the risks and the penalties for failing to segregatedangerous goods that are incompatible (see DangerousGoods Code, Volume 1, 6th edition, Attachment 1, Part 9)?
