National Curriculum Textbook 2A

• This book, along with Textbook 2B covers every outcome of the Year 2course, as laid out in the National Curriculum England frameworkdocument, (July 2013).

• There are no A and B exercises. The book covers the first half of the Year 2 course without the teacher having to pick and choose which questions to leave out and which exercises are important. They all are !

• The book follows on directly from TeeJay’s Year 1 Books and includes revision and consolidation of the work covered in the Year 1 course.

• Year 2 Book 2A contains a 9 page “Chapter Zero” which primarily revises every topic from the Year 1 course and can be used as a diagnostic tool. This could be followed by TeeJay’s diagnostic assessments * of the work covered in our Year 1 books.

• Non-calculator skills are emphasised and encouraged throughout the book.

• Each chapter will have a “Revisit - Review - Revise” exercise as a summary.

• Homework*, mirroring exercise by exercise, the topics in this book, is available as a photocopiable pack.

• TeeJay’s Assessment Pack* for Year 2 work, is also available as a photocopiable pack, and can be used topic by topic or combined to form a series of Year 2 Cumulative Tests. It also contains a series of longer assessments covering the Outcomes as laid out in the National Curriculum England framework document.

We make no apologies for the multiplicity of colours used throughout the book, both for text and in diagrams - we feel it helps brighten up the pages !!

+ =

+ =

The sign x is called the multiply or times sign.

When we write :- 4 x 2, we mean 2 lots of 4 which gives us 8.

We read this as 4 times 2 equals 8.

2 Times Table

2 lots of 1 coin = 2 coins. We say 1 x 2 = 21 times 2 is 2

2 lots of 2 coins = 4 coins. We say 2 x 2 = 42 times 2 is 4

2 lots of 3 coins = 6 coins. We say 3 x 2 = 63 times 2 is 6

2 lots of 4 coins = 8 coins. We say 4 x 2 = 84 times 2 is 8

Multiplication 1Multiplication 1

Use coins or counters to find out the following :-

2 lots of 5 coins, (5 x 2 = ?) 2 lots of 6 coins, (6 x 2 = ?)

2 lots of 7 coins, (7 x 2 = ?) 2 lots of 8 coins, (8 x 2 = ?)

The Square

1. Either trace this square or use a ruler todraw one of your own on a piece of paper.

Answer these questions about your square :-

a Are all four sides the same length ?

b Are all four angles the same size ? What kind are they ?

c Does it have symmetry ? How many lines of symmetry has it ?

d Use a pair of scissors to neatly cut out the square.

Turn your tracing over to see how many ways you can fit it back into the actual square on the page.

(Remember to count the starting place as 1, and you can flip the shape over).
