A FAther’s Promise to his sonin 1973, t.J. Martell was a high school student battling leukemia. he asked his father, tony, to raise a million dollars for cancer research so that “no one else will have to experience what i am going through.” although tony had no fundraising experience, he agreed. two years later, t.J. died at the age of nineteen, and that put tony’s promise in cement.

soon after, tony was joined by many friends in the music industry and started the t.J. Martell Foundation. since then, more than $270 million has been raised for leukemia, cancer and aiDs research which has been successfully leveraged into over a billion dollars in additional funding from larger funding sources.

From our Founder And ChAirmAn “every day, our research doctors are developing more effective treatments for leukemia, cancer and aiDs and we’re getting closer to a cure. every one of us has been touched by these devastating diseases, and now more than ever, we need your support to fulfill our mission. in honor and loving memory of all those who have fought so bravely, particularly my son t.J., please join us today. ” – tony Martell

From our Ceo “i am excited to announce the t.J. Martell Foundation will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2015. it is amazing that since its inception, the Foundation has raised almost $270 million dollars that has gone to creating clinical trials and new drug discoveries that is helping to save lives. the Foundation is dedicated to funding some of the brightest minds in scientific research, but research takes funding. We are thankful to our many donors who continue to give the “gift of life.”– laura heatherly

our funding has been leveraged to produce over one billion dollars in additional research grants.

the essence of martell funding includes four central core principles

• Supporting high-risk, high-gain research wherein seed funding can establish proof-of-concept to compete for larger nih grants

• Encouraging collaboration between the funded centers

• First and foremost, great science improving and progressing year on year

• Nurturing the next generation of basic, translational and clinical scientists

Jeremy An, Ph.d. from the department of biochemistry and molecular biology and urology at the mayo Clinic in rochester, mn is focused on prostate cancer and the mechanisms by which prostate cancer cells is resistance to androgen ablation, the most common therapy for advanced prostate cancer.

Chunlei Jin, Ph.d. from the department of Pediatrics research at the university of texas md Anderson Cancer Center where he is focused on the mechanism of tumor metastasis in osteosarcoma.

We are also developing novel interventions for “Chemo brain” that examine the effects of physical exercise on cognition. prostate caNcer: our funded laboratories are elucidating the mechanism by which the androgen receptor (Ar) is nontraditionally activated in prostate cancer and how this may affect a network of signaling pathways that determine cell growth and proliferation of the tumor cell. Breast caNcer: one major focus is to define molecular changes that are frequent in breast cancer cells and to use bench-based discoveries to advance patient care. treatment of patients with triple negative breast cancer (tnbC) has been challenging due to the heterogeneity of the disease and the absence of well-defined molecular drivers amenable to targeted therapies.thus, identification of predictive biomarkers is critical to select patients for more precise therapies against tnbC.
