Walk InformationThis leaflet has been designed to tell you all you need toknow about the route before you set out.
About TitleyTo the left of the church is all that remains of Titley Priory.Only the south-west angle and short stretches of thewest and south sides of a ditch with a low bank on eitherside survive. This earthwork appears to represent thepriory precinct boundary for a small monastic cell of theOrder of Tiron, which was founded in 1120-1 and grantedto Winchester College. It was dissolved in 1391 and thechurch, which was originally the priory chapel, wasentirely re-built in 1868.
There are some fantastic views on this walk - at the topof the hill between 2 and 3 you can look north to thehidden valley created by Hindwell Brook, a majortributary of the River Lugg. South you can look down into the river valley created by the Arrow. Northeast youlook across to the important Iron Age fort on WapleyHill. These hill forts were probably less about defenceand more about providing a tribal centre where the widerIron Age communities could gather and shelter. A placeto come to, to talk, trade, share stories and pass onideas and good practice amongst each other.
There is evidence of an Iron Age farmstead with anenclosing bank and ditch on the hill slope near to themodern day Green Lane Farm. Again this is furtherevidence that this area formed part of a wider, well-developed Iron Age community.
Although not recorded the green lane between GreenLane Farm and Burnt House has probably been inexistence for several thousand years as today’s footpathslink up to produce a ridge-top route from Wales into theEnglish Marches. The Mortimer Trail now follows someof this route, that might have linked the ancientsettlements at Hergest Ridge, Wapley, Croft Ambrey andbeyond.
ParkingThere is parking in Titley village.
RefreshmentsRefreshments can be obtained from the Stagg Inn in Titley. However,it is often very busy and pre-booking for meals isadvised.
