Note to Pastor

"I am offended that you chose to read a text that has been used for centuries to perpetuate the oppression of women and deny them their rightful place in society."

John Maxwell "The Ideal Wife.“"What Every Man Expects,"

"Always beautiful and cheerful....

Could have married a movie star but wanted only you....

Beauty that won't run in a rainstorm....

Never sick....

Only allergic to jewellery and fur coats.... Insists that moving furniture by herself is good for her figure....

John Maxwell "The Ideal Wife.“"What Every Man Expects,"

Expert in cooking, cleaning the house, fixing appliances, and keeping quiet. Her favorite hobbies are mowing the lawn and shovelling snow. Her favorite expression is 'What can I do for you now, Honey?' She wants you to go out with your buddies so she can stay home and get caught up on the laundry."

John Maxwell "The Ideal Wife.“"What Every Man Gets,"

• "She speaks 140 words a minute, with occasional gusts of 180.

• Where there's smoke ... she's cooking!

• She lets you know that you have only two faults: what you say and what you do."

Beneath these stones there does lie,

Back to back, my husband and I.

When the last trumpet the air shall fill,

If he gets up, I think I'll just lie still.

Principle of Interpretation

• It is the goal of the pastor in preaching God’s Word to discern the one intended meaning of the author and convey that meaning to the audience. I am not at liberty to manipulate the text the something that is more culturally appealing. If the Word of God is found offensive then take it up with God- I am only the messenger.

What does it mean for wives to submit to their husbands?

I. You must understand the meaning of submission?

submit to the law. • The Greek middle-voice grammatical

structure suggests this is willing and voluntary.

What biblical submission does mean:

• A. It means God has an order in the family.

• Students are under the authority of the teacher. So it is with parents and children, employees and employers, coaches and teams. The husband has one role, the wife another.

What biblical submission does mean:

• And here's what biblical submission does not mean: Note that she is to submit to her own husband. Women are not inferior to men. She doesn't submit to every man, just to her husband.

What biblical submission does mean:

• A. It means God has an order in the family.

• Note also that wives are to be submissive "as to the Lord." This means that as Spirit-filled women, this is their duty, their obedience, and their obligation to God.

Philippians 2

• “Christ did not consider it robbery to consider himself equal with God.” Yet he submitted and humbled himself to the father none-the-less

Philippians 2

• “Christ did not consider it robbery to consider himself equal with God.” Yet he submitted and humbled himself to the father none-the-less.

• We see the struggle he faced in the Garden of Gethsemane when the reality of passion was approaching.

Submission does not lesson the dignity of a person any more

than Christ submitting to the will of the Father lessoned him.

What does it mean for wives to submit to their husbands?

II. You must understand the method for submission.

Ephesians 5:23

• "For the husband is head of the wife

Ephesians 5:23

• "For the husband is head of the wife."

• Head means "in authority over”

Ephesians 5:23

• "For the husband is head of the wife."

• Head means "in authority over."

• To water down the implications of this passage some had attempted to define “head” (kephale) as “source.”

II. You must understand the method for submission.

• A. The order of authority is rooted in creation.

In 1 Corinthians11:3

• "But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." Man was made first (Hebrew ish), and woman was made from man (isha—"out of man").

Genesis 2:23

• Adam said, "She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."

II. You must understand the method for submission.

• A. The order of authority is rooted in creation.

• B. The order of authority is also rooted in redemption.

• Paul compares marriage with Christ as "head of the church."

• None of us would argue that Jesus is not both "head" and "the Savior" of "the church, which is his body

• None of us would argue that Jesus is not both "head" and "the Savior" of "the church, which is his body."

• Therefore, if we accept the Bible as infallible, we can argue that the husband in a position of responsibility over his wife.

• The curse creates the setting for tension between the two sexes and its ramifications are felt even today. The broad context of this passage seeks to restore Gods ideal.

What does it mean for wives to submit to their husbands?

III. You must understand the model for submission.

III. You must understand the model for submission.

• A. As grateful recipients of his love and care.

John Stott

• "Whenever the husband's headship mirrors the headship of Christ, then the wife's submission to the protection and provision of his love, far from detracting from her womanhood, will positively enrich it."

• A. As grateful recipients of his love and care.

• B. "in everything." in the sense that this is consistent with biblical truth.

APPLICATION

1. The modern world system has little to teach on how to have a healthy marriage. The societal obsession with individual rights and equality has diminished the concept of sacrifice and community. There are a lot of people who have demanded and gotten their rights as they perceive them and find themselves lonely because they refuse to cater to anyone.

APPLICATION

2. God established marriage as between a man and woman since the day of creation. This passage affirms that relationship and provides principles for strengthening that relationship

APPLICATION

3. Equality does not equal identity. Male and female have equal access into the presence of God but we remain male and female- husband and wife. In that context God address how we are to relate to each other- equal but not the same.

Alan Redpath:

"There is nothing—no circumstance, no trouble, no testing—that can ever touch me until, first of all, it has gone past God and past Christ right through to me. If it has come that far, it has come with a great purpose, which I may not understand at the moment.

Alan Redpath:

But as I refuse to become panicky, as I lift up my eyes to him and accept it as coming from the throne of God for some great purpose of blessing to my own heart, no sorrow will ever disturb me, no trial will ever disarm me, no circumstance will cause me to fret, for I will rest in the joy of what my Lord is. That is the rest of victory."
