The big debates of SociologySociety is designed to protect the wealthy and powerful. Society forces “working-class” people to work for the wealthiest who exploit them and prevent them gaining power for themselves.
Marxism
All aspects of a society serve a function and
are necessary for the survival of that
society
FunctionalismSociety is designed to privilege men and
disadvantage women.
It is a patriarchy centered around male power over
women.Feminism

Conflict in society is decreasing, not increasing, despite more inequality.
Strengths & Weaknesses of Marxism
The strengths
of Marxism The weaknesses
of Marxism
Marxism is supported by a lot of evidence - our society clearly isn't equal.
Marxism has trouble explaining social mobility - people change class.
Marxism does a good job explaining conflict in society that does occur.

Strengths & Weaknesses of Functionalism
The strengths
of FunctionalismThe weaknesses
of Functionalism
Functionalists have trouble explaining change in society - if it ain't broke, why are we fixing it?
Overemphasises consensus in society- ignores the problems
Implies that inequality is OK in society, and has a purpose.
Explains consensus - why society hasn't fallen apart yet!
Think - Pair - Share
Explains why we have so many shared norms and values (e.g. that murder is bad)

Strengths & Weaknesses of Feminism

of Feminism The weaknesses
of Feminism

Feminism has had a real impact on the world.
Patriarchy is clearly present in our society; feminism helps to explain why.
Some feminists ignore other sources of conflict (e.g. racism or class conflict)
Radical feminists can seem to want to put women on top and disadvantage men - reverse patriarchy.

Social Action/Interpretivist Theories:
· Society and structures/institutions are seen as created by individuals.· Emphasises free will over the determinism of structuralism.· Emphasis is on the individual's behaviour and how that ultimately impacts the overall shape of society.
January 04, 2019
· Stresses the chaos and uncertainty in society and argues that social structures (family, social class) are breaking down.· Relationships are ever changing and therefore you cannot talk about the 'family' like you used to.· The family is too complex and different to categorise and label.· Emphasises individual choice and speaks of 'pick n mix' in terms of our identity, we can be in control and reinvent ourselves as much as we wish.

POSTMODERNISM:
January 04, 2019
Postmodernism argues...· Society is ever changing and therefore cannot be understood through the application of theories (meta-narratives like Functionalism and Marxism as they are too general).· There is only a mass of individuals making individual choices. The emphasis now is on the individual as a consumer making their own choices about their own identity, relationship, education, health and lifestyle.
