Pick a book, that is not already a movie or TV show (any book or magazine, fiction, non-fiction, children’s book, comic book, non-English book... any book), and create a 60-90 sec title sequence motiongraphic with audio, graphics and kinesthetic type.

The chosen book is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

Staging and Timing are the animation principles that are being used. Typography is not a huge part of the title sequence because of the size. The main focus is on the video elements. The various scenes are sometimes fast and sometimes show in order to match the music. The transitions between scenes are marked by certain sounds in the soundtrack.

The upbeat music matches when elements come onto the screen. The animation principles that are used are: Squash & Stretch and Timing. The many doors are being squashed and stretched as they move into place on the screen. The little typography that is used is shown when doors are opened and also being thrown from the doors, a main part of the movie.

This title sequence shows the two perspectives that are in the book, All the Light We Cannot See. The darker scenes represent Marie-Laure LeBlanc’s version in the story while the lighter scenes represent Werner Pfennig’s storyline in the book.

The story is told in two different perspectives following two main characters and also alternated between timelines, going back and forth in time. Marie-Laure, the first main character, is a young, blind French girl who is exceptional at reading, science, and puzzles. When she became blind, her father creates model towns to help her learn to navigate in her hometown without the help of others. Werner Pfennig, the second main character is an orphan in Germany who eventually joins a Nazi school for an education with radios. By the end of the book, these two join paths in France as they are both trying to survive World War II.
